5 reasons why it is not worth it to purchase the iPhone 3G.

2 Megapixel camera: Even a common phone has 3 to 5 megapixel camera.

Hidden cost: Paying additional to Maxis for nothing

No physical keyboard built-in

No stereo Bluetooth, still no MMS, still no video recording

Lack of 7.2Mbps download support

Actually on reflection, the 6 month contract thing is really not that bad if you're an existing Maxis Value Plus subscriber.

Pick any of the normal Maxis Value Plus plans or if you're already on their plan, stay with them.
RM2540 for 8GB and you get 500mb data every month for 6 months.
Since grey market prices are about there, maybe 1-200 ringgit cheaper, it's really good value for money cz warranty's in Malaysia + you get 500mb every month.
*
yep.. that how i thought when i saw the plan.
But after i cool my head down from the iphone in malaysia hype.
I find it pretty dumb though, why the hell am i forking out so much for a phone. It was supposed to be cheaper.
If you noticed, the price isn't far from the pricing of those SG set seller. Maxis studied the pricing, jack it up a lil because they have advantage over the warranty?

It's better to just buy from black market (ok not that i'm advocating it or am i selling any myself) - but why get your into a contract - plus the fact that you might or might not use *that* many 'free minutes' (which you kinda sorta already paid for..so it's not really free)

It's better imo to just buy from sellers here or somewhere, and pay the mobile charges as you go, more 'freedom' if you ask me. these commitment fees are such 'scams' man...

Maxis to Bring iPhone 3G to Malaysia on March 20

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – 11 March 2009: Malaysia ’s leading mobile operator Maxis Communications Berhad (“Maxis”) today announced that it will offer iPhone 3G 8GB for free on its iValue 4 plan from March 20. Maxis will offer a range new tariff plans, starting at just RM100 per month, tailored specifically for iPhone customers.

iPhone 3G combines three products in one – a revolutionary phone, widescreen iPod and breakthrough internet device – to create an incredible mobile experience. With fast 3G networking, GPS mapping and support for enterprise features including Microsoft Exchange, iPhone 3G puts even more features at your fingertips. The groundbreaking App Store provides access to tens of thousands of applications from games to social networking to financial planning and health management, generating more than 500 million downloads to date. iPhone 3G is now available in over 70 countries around the world.

“As the nation’s leading operator, Maxis has always stood for innovation and distinctive customer experiences," said  Sandip Das , Chief Executive Officer of Maxis.  "We are very pleased to launch iPhone 3G in Malaysia as many of our mobile users have been eagerly anticipating this revolutionary phone. They will really enjoy the many embedded and downloadable applications from the first time they use iPhone 3G.”

Maxis will offer the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G models with four new and specially designed postpaid plans called iValue, all of which are voice-data bundled price plans, starting from RM100 per month. For customers who sign up for a monthly commitment of RM375 over a 24-month period on the iValue 4 plan, the iPhone 3G 8GB will be free of charge.

The bundled voice and data plans are the first of their kind in Malaysia , reflecting the substantial growth in mobile data usage among Maxis’ customers. Maxis’ subscribers form the largest base of mobile data users in Malaysia , with more than 4.4 million accessing mobile internet services and sites on a regular basis.

“Malaysians, including our Maxis customers, are among the highest internet and data users in the world; and iPhone 3G will further enliven their mobile experiences with Maxis,” added Mr Das. “We are making nearly RM1.6 billion of investments into our networks this year. Over the coming months we will continue a comprehensive upgrade and expansion programme that will further enhance coverage and performance, including our high speed 3G data network.”

Yeah, basically the SG/Australia/NZ grey market iPhone prices gives Maxis an idea of what consumers are willing to pay.

So they based their rate plans around these prices. They figured with local warranty, customers might be willing to pay a bit more, hence, their current prices.

And if I absolutely have to buy an iPhone now and am an existing Maxis customer, I might just take the 6 month contract. Why not? Pay extra RM1-200 and get local warranty + 500mb per month.

It's not really just them though.

Seems like every vendor that tie up with Apple to sell these things always come up with these horrible plans.

Reading through the internal email I'm receiving from my contact, here are a few important tidbits. I cannot divulge the entire email, as it contain sensitive material on how Maxis handles the iPhone internally, so I'll need to self-censor and post what CAN be posted.

QUOTE
1. For any submission of the faulty device, customer can walk in to Maxis Service Centres for repair.

This may finally mean viable access to a certified Apple technician to do repair work and maintainance on the iPhone!

2. The warranty period of the iPhone is 12 months from the date the device is "unbricked".

This statement is posted VERBATIM, from the said email, so it looks like Maxis knows of the hanky-panky jailbreaking process going around. Although their term "unbricked" is a little off the mark. laugh.gif

3. If customer downloads unauthorised software inside the device and this causes the device to be faulty, the warranty is automatically VOID.

Self explanatory.

4. CSR is required to key in the details of the faulty device via online to 3PL(3rd Party Logistic). The RMA form will be available online in MIMS/Dealernet. 3PL (3rd party logistic) will then collect the faulty device and submit to Apple in Singapore for repair.

Repairs are seconded to a third party entity, done via online, and repairs sent to Singapore. This may mean that non-Maxis iPhones are not eligible to take advantage of the repair facilities available. sad.gif

5. If the faulty device is in warranty (less than 12 months) and the repair is covered, customer will get a seed unit as a replacement. The repaired unit then will be returned as a seed stock. If the faulty device is out of warranty (more than 12 month) or the repair is not covered under warranty, then customer need to wait for his repaired device. There would not be any loan unit given to customer.

Same treatment given just like AT&T customers in the States.

6. The plan rates are as per posted before in that table. However, the PENALTY for breaking contract is not posted. Here they are:-

i.  For 12 months contract, they are "what's left of the months" + another 12 months.
ii. For 24 months contract, they are "what's left of the months" + another 24 months.
iii. For 6 months contract, they are RM100 for 6 months, a.k.a RM600.

What's all this mean, you ask? For this, I need to post the "monthly commitment fee" for each and every i-Value plans available.

i-Value 1 = RM100, i-Value 2 = RM155, i-Value 3 = 250, i-Value 4 = RM375

For example, for those subscribing for a 12 months contract on i-Value 1 for an iPhone 3G 16GB, here are the breakdown:-

iPhone price after discount = RM2290. For 12 months, you'll be shelling out 12 x RM100, which entitles you 333 minutes worth of talk time, and 500 MB worth of data. Total cost of ownership = RM2290 + (12 x RM100) = RM3490.

Now, if you decide to break contract ONE month after signing in, the PENALTY is "what's left of the months" + another 12 months. So it would be 11 months (since you're breaking contract ONE month after signing for a 12 months contract) PLUS another 12 months, making it 23 months. Each month, the commitment fee is RM100 for i-Value 1 plan, so that is 23 months x RM100 per month, making the penalty need to be paid for breaking contract = RM2300. That is ON TOP of the RM2290 already paid for the discounted iPhone on this plan.

The maths, and cost of penalty, gets frighteningly heftier as you progress to i-Value 4. I counted, up to RM10,000+! shocking.gif

7. For those wanting to purchase RETAIL, and not prebooking online to get them on the 20th, you can get them at all Klang Valley MAxis and Retail Center on March 23rd, and all Maxis and Retail Center NATIONWIDE by the 27th.

8. You can pay via cash, Visa, Mastercard, AMEX or DINERS card.

9. 1 Handset Contract per MSISDN for Upfront Payment and limited to 2 Handset Contracts per customer.

10. For all Port In customers  under Mobile Number Portability, customer need to be contracted for 12 months. They are NOT allowed to be contracted for more than 12 months. They need to sign an  Addendum and an Early Termination Penalty will be imposed if they terminate the line or change the rate plan within the 12 months period.

For all existing Maxis postpaid customers, they will be contracted for 12 months or 24 months contract if they take up the offer. They need to sign an Addendum and an Early Termination Penalty will be impose if they terminate the line or change the rate plan within the 12 months or 24 months period.

11. Registration via online portal and with the Biometrics is MANDATORY. Mandatory document required is a valid NRIC  + any 2 of the additional mandatory document :- Drivers license, credit card, Pasport, Payslip, Form J, Confirmation letter from employer. For Biometric registration, documents needs to be SEEN. For non-Biometric registration, documents needs to be PHOTOCOPIED.
The rest of the email content, I cannot divulge. Any other details are either of sensitive nature, or not pertaining general public release (internal staff rates, plan packages, etc.)
