First time camping? Gunung Nuang first campsite is an ideal place for first time. Trek in 2 hours and Kem Lolo got water source for your cooking. Could be pack during Saturday. Not camp at the peak ya.

You could try camp at Sungai Chiling but there is a cost where you need to pay for entrance fee. Parking are provided nearby too. You could venture to Sungai Chiling waterfall but do careful with river crossing number 5 or 6. Could be deep and fast if rain.

Gunung Irau basecamp is another good place for beginners. The camp site is actually the car park for the hikers who wishes to hike Gunung Irau. Pretty flat terrain but people camp just because for the weather.

Too many place to think off biggrin.gif

Gunung Rajah you do not need guide. Park at Chamang waterfall and from the parking, there is a route on your right hand side which climb up hill. Climb up a lil while and you will come across the dirt route which will take you to Lata Naning (mid point to Gunung Rajah). The only confusing part is during the river trek but should be well marked.

Wish to follow you for Gunung Nuang although it is been a while since I last hike but better opt to rest my legs for KOTR 2013. Cheers.

Waterproof and lightweight - sounds expensive thou. Not windproof? Kinabalu might not be sufficient thou.

Go for a GORE-TEX type. There a few type of category and best place to look for them - hmm Lafuma at Jalan Telawi 5, Bangsar.

If you need other brands, perhaps you could tell me what you like and I advice you from there.

There are two waterfalls there. Both waterfall are very identical to Lata Naning. One you follow the stream and head towards the left. The other you do a river crossing and trek up about 35 minutes to reach Lata Naning.

I never manage to complete the day hike to Rajah that time as I just return from Indonesia the night before biggrin.gif Too tired to continue even though I could.

Maybe you could browse certain blogs which might able to help you on your conquest.

Running the 16.8km here as I am training for a full marathon next year (one of my wish list).

Hi Guys,..
This coming april i am going to climb mount KK.
Currently i am surveying for some gear, all weather jacket, hiking shoe/trail shoe, day bag pack and some gear....
I m looking at some salomon trail shoe and some deuter backpack but not sure which is good. I scare some shoe might look good but actual might not so practical.
I prefer a better gear as i can use it for my other future hiking or backpacking trip.
Any recommandation and some favourite for you all?
Appreciate for any infomation...

Well, I could advice you on the backpack portion but not the shoes. As I am a fan of using the Kampung Adidas, and a high top boots (for different terrain besides soil such as sand, ash). I personally believe the shoes regarding it can be from Columbia, or Salomon, they are design to be used at jungle terrain. Certain area the shoes might not fit well - for example river crossing. There are pros and cons about it. The reason why I opt for a Kampung Adidas - I can dispose them off easily when I do not need them biggrin.gif and it is cheap. Should be RM10 per pair now. But one thing not good about that, it does not give your ankle the protection o.O Perhaps others at here could help you on this matter.

Back to bag type. Are you planning to use for hiking? Backpack? Camping? Seriously everyone have different definition about backpack. My term for backpack which you carry those camping back together on your bag and travel with it, and some define backpack as a small bag which you could bring along during a leisure trip. Deuter is a good brand but beware there are fakes in the market. If you are looking forward for a daypack - you are looking into a 10l to 30l backpack. Above than 35l could be used for camping. Other brands such as Karrimor, Quechua, Lafuma could be good for you. Depends what color, design and etc you want.

Gear such as jackets I assume? Kinabalu is a hard place to predict the weather. It could be hot; cold; rain. You could wear normal wear during your first day of hike either from Mesilau or Timpohon. Rain might drizzle a little, you could prepare rain jacket or a disposable yellow poncho (which you could get it at Guardian or Watson for a merely RM5). Some are afraid of cold, so they start to invest into windbreaker, long john and fleece. Some do not want to be troublesome, so they get the all in one jacket - combination of fleece and windbreaker. Basically there are a long list of gears and it is hard for me to explain every single thing in details. I hope after you read this long and boring answer from me, you could get an even clearer picture what are you hunting for biggrin.gif Cheers!

Thanks for the Great info.

As for shoe,
Initially i plan to look for trail running shoe, i was thinking if a shoe is good for trail is must be good enough for hiking except it is more lightweight and no protection to the ankle. The most important for me is that the shoe must not feeling slippery on wet rock. I do look at some of the pic at KK trail. I see there are a lot of rock and wood use for the road.

As for Day BagPack,
I would like a bag that is enough for 1 or 2 days worth of supply. I think a 20l bag is good enough for me. Beside that next time i can use it for leisure usage.

As for Jacket,
I got some trouble on this part as i think there are not many shop around my place selling good hiking jacket. I am looking between a hardshell and a all in one jacket now. I am afraid a hardshell is not warm enough while a triclimate jacket is too warm even to a KK climb. It might be too over bulky for KK climb. I dont have much experience on jacket thing as mostly of my travelling is in local warm weather only.

If you want an honest answer, there are no shoes that can overcome the slippery of wet rocks. Even worst if there are algae too. But if you are referring to the rocks and woods along Timpohon trail, you should not be worry. Any trail shoes will be sufficient during your hike to Kinabalu. There are no river crossing at Kinabalu so that ease your worried down.

Daypack for 2 days I will recommend a 20l - 30l. 20l could be a lil small depends on what you are carrying. Daypack could come into two different type of support. One come with normal and the other will be air comfort. But with comfort, it does take up certain space away in terms of storage. Some prefer the sling bag version such as Hypergear which is water proof.

There are a lot of place selling good jackets. It depends what kind of jacket which I had highlighted earlier. If you are using for Kinabalu hike, just get a long john, fleece and windbreaker. You could get those winter type of jacket but as you said earlier it could be bulky and what make it worst - cotton material. I think you are looking into a multipurpose jacket - a jacket that could reduce your chillness when it is cold and water proof. Gore-Tex material would be your answer and easily it could cost you RM1k and above. All you want is to do your body warm and you could consider having some heat pad to place at your body for comfort.

Do ask me if you have any doubt.
