Cathedral bells of Liverpool to ring out for Hillsborough 20th anniversary

LIVERPOOL will come to a standstill to mark the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster as bells peal 96 times across the city.

Chimes from both cathedrals and the city’s civic buildings could sound together for the first time since the end of World War II.

Liverpool cathedral’s Great George and the others sounding in unison will be heard for miles around.

At 3.06pm on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 15 people will be asked to observe a two-minute silence.

Liverpool FC is urging Europe’s football governing body to spare them a potential fixture clash with the 20th anniversary Hillsborough memorial.

If the Reds progress beyond their two-legged Champions League tie against Real Madrid they have asked to be excused from playing on the day.

The first leg could be scheduled 24 hours earlier, leaving the Liverpool players time to fly home to attend the memorial service at Anfield the following afternoon.

If Liverpool are playing at home on Tuesday, Anfield staff will work through the night to prepare the ground for one of the most symbolic Hillsborough anniversaries for years.

A Liverpool FC spokesman said: “We have written to Uefa and pointed out the significance of April 15 if we do get to the quarter final.

“We asked that we would wish not to play on that date and if April 14 would be considered.”

Uefa has replied, stating it “acknowledged the significance of the 20th anniversary and the request not to play on April 15”.

Other ideas for the anniversary remain under discussion.

But it seems certain Kenny Dalglish will perform the reading and Hillsborough Families Support Group (HFSG) president Trevor Hicks will deliver the address.

Dalglish was Reds manager at the time of the tragedy and attended many of the supporters’ funerals.

A number of prominent city church leaders, including Bishop James Jones, will lead the service at Anfield.

Discussions are under way about the possibility of presenting the families who lost loved ones their official Freedom of the City status.

Normally up to 5,000 people attend the anniversaries, but this year there could be as many as 15,000.

Ninety-six people died after Liverpool fans were crushed at the Sheffield stadium at the start of the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest in 1989.

Lord mayor of Liverpool Cllr Steve Rotheram said: “The date for the Hillsborough 20th anniversary has been the most important in my diary throughout my 12 months in office.”
If we progress through to the Q-Final our game could be played a day early because of the Hillsborough anniversary. I hope UEFA would sanction this request as this incident have left a big mark on our club.

Did you forget we like to do things from behind? It feels better that way. brows.gif

And everytime we lead, we end up losing...I m more comfortable if we are trailing behind them for the next few games.. laugh.gif

I rather prefer we are at 2nd place for now as the pressure as the leader is tremendously big, which is proved quite unbearable by us. It's been so long before Liverpool can take challenge as champion contender while ManU was doing it every recent year. Just wait patiently, when the time comes, we will speed up, accelerate and overtake them just like they done it to Chelsea. If we can put constant pressure to them, in the end, they will lose concentration due to fear of losing. No need big club to kill them, just a lower club will surprise them more.

What we need to do now is concentrate on each game we have, by all means, win it. If we lose or draw even once, the title will be further away from us. They got quality, we got quality. I'd say we are even with them, but not better.

Van der Sar and his defense will have more and more pressure as the record is with them. Other teams should manipulate this and attack more as ManU defense can't manage to make any mistake, or should I say, afraid to make one, and this will make them more vulnerable.

I hope Rafa won't risk Gerrard for next match if he's still not fully 100% fit. We can't afford to lose him once again, especially at this critical stage of league and CL.

And I support Solstice on this, WE LIKE TO DO THINGS FROM BEHIND, don't we?

I wonder why teams like Fulham or Stoke or Everton (no offense to the fans) played differently against Man U and Liverpool.

When thy're against Liverpool, they parked a bus in front of their goal (even at their home)

Last night against Man U, Fulham actually intended on attack even at Old Trffd (even before the 1st goal)

????????????????????????????

well, cant blame them for trying to play football
its always frustating to see opponent sit deep behind that's why u need to score as early as possible

XABI FRUSTRATED BY CITY BAN

Xabi Alonso admits he will cut a frustrated figure this weekend when he watches Liverpool's clash with Manchester City from the stands.
Having collected five yellow cards so far this term, the Reds' Spanish midfielder will serve a one-match ban for the visit of Mark Hughes' men, who themselves go into the game having won just once away from home this season.

With Manchester United hitting top form at the top of the table, Alonso insists three points are a necessity against City - and he's hoping for a far less dramatic game than the one played out between the two sides earlier in the campaign.

"It's always frustrating to watch games from the stands but I have known for a while I was likely to miss a match at some point and it has to be this one on Sunday," he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"The important thing is all our international players came back fit and also had some time off. It's important to have some time to disconnect during the middle of the season and now we can look forward to the game with Manchester City, which is going to be very important for us if we want to challenge for the title.

"Hopefully it won't be as dramatic as our game at City when we were two goals down at half-time. We had to play with a lot of belief in that second half and score three goals, which eventually we managed. This time hopefully it will be more comfortable.

"They are a good team even though they haven't got the best of away records this season, so we know we will be in for a tough match."

Alonso's absence could be tempered by the possible return of Steven Gerrard from hamstring trouble, although the Liverpool skipper is expected to start the game from the substitutes' bench.

"It's good to see Stevie coming back but we have to wait until he is one hundred per cent," added Alonso.

"It's not intelligent to rush him back. Whenever he feels okay he will be a big part of our squad again."

Is not like I want rafa to go but if he really does, I agree that Lee shouldnt take up the job.He is good as number 2 but he just couldnt manage the club as gaffer.Anyway, bringing in new manager might take 1-2 years before the team is stable and mount a serious title challenge...Not worth trying, better stick with rafa.
