Hey guys,

I'm coming over to RMIT Melbourne this coming July. I'm a bit lost with the accommodation aspect - how do you guys normally go about looking for an accommodation? The ones listed at realestate.com.au and domain.com.au is a little too high for me - I'm targeting for a place with rental $150-180/week at most, preferably somewhere at Carlton or somewhere near there as it'd be nearer to my business building at Bourke St.

Is it possible to book for an accommodation while I'm still in Msia?
*
staying alone or share? wink.gif

It's very difficult to get studio apartment or 2-bedroom apartment/ person for $150pw. It's very unlikely. If you are willing to share with more ppl, that will be good.
*
possible but limited.

QUOTE(yusszzxx @ May 18 2009, 06:37 PM)
150/pw per person.. so 300/pw for 2.. .. possible?
*
try finding area such as brunswick, ascot vale carlton. there is possibility you can find one. 150 does not include bills.

Yep if everything goes well, I'll be studying at RMIT Bourke St. this coming July. Uni housing is too expensive for me so that's a no go I'm afraid. My budget's only about $150-180 at most per week.
*
dont assume like msian, that someone will take care of your accomodation. Rental in city is not cheap.

You're under the mistaken assumption that I've not done my research and that I "assume like msian" - I know that renting in the city's not cheap, which is why I'm looking at surrounding suburbs like Carlton. I was told by a friend who stays there that $150-180/pw is possible.
This is not the first time I'm looking, I was just stating that the website that was linked by KVReninem didn't have any vacancies left.
Ahh I thought you were talking about housing provided by universities, which are generally much more expensive, partly because they have mandatory meal plans.

I don't think my uni has such a thing though. And yeah, the screenshot does clarify what you were telling me about. tongue.gif
*
yes you do your homework but you still expect it like msian. icon_rolleyes.gif
lets me just give you a piece of mind, renting is not easy to find especially with the current situation in melb city, where availability/affordable for a person is getting harder & rent is going up due to FFHOG as to offset the downward trend of property.
anyone can tell you how much rent you can get in area like carlton, brunswick etc..but you really need to get to the matter itself to deal it.

the site i gave you is to assist you, nothing more. More over, vacancies are usually low unless something happen to the uni sux n ppl are leaving it.
to find nice bargain, you got to be quick as you are not alone in this matter.
and, all you need is to apply. from there then you can proceed. dont expect to see high vacancies in Melb city especially any building near unimelb & rmit.

Thanks for the links! (and yeah I'm a 'him' unlike many users on this site who may pretend to be otherwise.) I checked the .pdf that my uni has and apart from its own housing database which I'm unable to access at the moment as I'm not there yet, I've also already looked at other sites like realestate, domain, and share-accom before.

I most probably will be sharing with another Malaysian dude too who'd be studying in the same uni. Might either rent a room together or look for shared housing - but can't say much since I'm not there yet.
*
dude, maybe you can try to call up intl student & ask for a temporary pw/user id to find renting plc., just a suggestion.

Are you future Deakin student???

Not all rooms at the website are good. Besides, some of the prices list at there different when you go for inspection.

Finding a room really depend your luck. If really want to go for cheap then try to ask china student. Anyway, I not really like that type of house. Maybe I'm a bit fussy.

For me the most important is clean. Then the internet quota. Then the room cannot be too small.

So, it was really take sometimes for me to find a room which I like.

Good luck.

I need to ask you guys for an opinion - would you guys pay $185/week for a student hostel in the CBD which includes gas/electric/water bills which is a stone's throw away from your uni, or would you opt for cheaper alternatives at the surrounding suburbs (Carlton, Fitzroy, etc) by sharing a flat/house with other people (whether it includes bills or not, I'm not too sure)?

A friend of mine who has studied in Melbourne in the past told me this, and I quote, "Staying with others in an apartment is an experience in itself and it's fun, where else a student hostel has a different feel." Do you guys reckon the same thing too? This is what's stopping me from booking that place right away 'cause I'm inclined to agree what my friend had said, but I thought I'd ask for a second opinion here.
*
stay in student hostel awhile then move out later, staying with others is fun but if u find the wrong one. u got screwed tongue.gif

Also,is CBD safe after late nite ? Since im an architecture student, there're possibilities i'll be heading out of school late nite, maybe 3 or 4am.

@hihihi
you've got a good point about staying further away from the U,since its the same price with the CBD rent per week. Also thanks for the info bout
college square.Really appreciate it smile.gif

north melb, brunswick, ascot vale
overall in melb crime is increasing especially assult on indian student, n china is worried too
if you are archi student, u might want to stay nearby sooner.

Tell me,if you guys walk on the street, you guys see a lot of Chinese/Indian people on the street (tho they can be from India or China/Korea), Dont you feel like you're in Malaysia?? the difference is probably the weather and the language spoken there

hurm...i wonder,if i go to Aussie like few few weeks before orientation day and without securing myself any accommodation yet,is that like taking a risk?
I was thinking about inspecting the apartments first and if im satisfied,i'd straight away move in.Or should i reserved a place while in still in Malaysia?(to be on the safe side)What did you guys do when you guys had to look for accommodation back then??

thanks

doh.gif it is no2. KL. just the more organised one.
if you come earlier, ur have higher chances of getting plcs n settle down.

i already expected b4 i reach melbourne here..here is like 2nd malaysia..diff is here the ppl more friendly compare to malaysia(my opinion)

i would say u better go for temporary acc and look for acc at here..u can inspect yet u can process ur application immediately..or if u got any friends then u can stay thr for few days..n i dun think they will let u reserve place if find through agency..they mostly wan ppl inspect 1st then only can go for application..as short,no inspect=no application

i know wat ur feeling right now as i also asked many ques b4 i came here too..i found many places but yet need to go for inspection only can apply..sot some places no need to inspection but need deposit money 1st which i scared scam..in the end i m lucky tht i got fren can let me stay for 1 week n lucky too can found a place near my uni within the week..inspection when new semester coming is damn pack...thr will b around 20-30ppl for inspection

its media propaganda of just want to scare people. The seasonal flu is in, due to wet weather and most people cant adapt quick enough.
if you had swine flu, u dont survive long enough to feel the slow death. its more of the changes in weather.

HSBC....But I don't recommend you use HSBC. They have very limited ATM around Adelaide. The best thing for you to do is to open a HSBC account and then transfer it to either BankSA or Commonwealth Bank. BankSA have the most number of ATM in South Australia. Commonwealth Bank have the most ATM in the whole Australia.
*
HSBC has teamed up with Westpac(St.George) n BankSA. pls refer here in giving their customer free ATM unlimited transaction.

Any banks in Australia can clear any local bank draft instantly? since I want to deposit that bank draft when opening new account at Australia. Any limitation and how much local bank charge?  icon_question.gif
*
On typical basis, Bank draft may take up to 3 day or a week to clear up.
Regarding about local bank charge, it varies from bank to bank.
I`m sure every bank in Msia has its own schedule of Bank cheque(bankdraft) price facilitated by BNM.

QUOTE(hihihehe @ Jun 8 2009, 11:28 AM)
thr is no bank tht can clear instantly with bank draft...
it will need at least 2-3 working days to clear
n i dun think bank will charge u for bank draft..if got also few $$ like $2-5

but if TT then they will charge both sides..mine always get charged $17 per transaction shocking.gif
*
It depends on where the money is TT from. preferable like HSBC, it has branch in Msia. Thus the TT cost can be minimise.
if CIMB> CBA..it takes many hand to deal it rather one straight forward and cost saving transaction.

Do note however, these international banks like HSBC and Citibank, need about A$2500-A$3000 as a opening deposit.

Believe me, if you carry that much in cash into Australia immigration is going be take a interest in you. At the end of the day you still need to have a bank draft to bring money into Australia, so why not just open a normal Australian bank account?
*
nope, HSBC- A2000 for initial deposit.
Immi will not take interest in you as student. They will take interest with person who has connection of funds and money laundering like our typical msian Ministers.

QUOTE(RBR @ Jun 8 2009, 07:21 PM)
You only have to declare amounts above $10,000.  Even then, it won't be beyond a few questions if they see a student visa and a newcomer.

Otherwise, there is no way they'll know how much cash you are carrying into the country.  And truth be told, $3,000 is a small amount wink.gif

Added on June 8, 2009, 6:23 pm
HSBC has an ATM access deal with Westpac so that is not a problem.  Otherwise, the occasions that you have to visit a branch is extremely limited.  In my 6 1/2 years I can count with 1 hand the number of times I had to visit a bank.  Almost everything can be done online or via the telephone.  A major advantage with not using the Big 4 banks is fees and customer service.  HSBC does not have fees for savings accounts plus have excellent customer service.
*
yea, dont even need big 4, Btw, there is Bank of China too if you do business. laugh.gif
