Zenith under the new CEO (the Moroccan guy) has become something of a joke to those who knew the old Zenith. They were the most aggressive in making pocketwatch-sized wristwatches with the sort of extroverted design that appeals to teenagers. Yeah, I know, generation gap and all. But I'm in my mid to late twenties myself. Not that old yet.

Swatches are great watches for what they are meant to be: casual, fun and affordable. There are no successful fakes. Most of them are plastic, though not all. Your BF will like them. Those on ebay might have been worn before. Or they might be new. Be sure to ask.

Added on July 27, 2009, 9:13 pmRegarding used Dornblueths: It's a German watch, with a German heritage, so lots of Germans like it. If you want to read about this watch in German, you have to search for it under "Dornblueth" and not "Dornbluth". Notice the extra "e". The u umlaut (the two dots above the ü) are written as "ue" when you use a keyboard with no umlauts. Here, for instance, was a 99.1 that sold for 2400 Euros, goddammit:

German is my second language so I read a few German watch forums. Here is the price list on the German Rolex Forum:

at 23 already can afford RM19K watch.. target not too far away man!

Congrads! Zenith do make good watch. although some ppl do love vintage Zenith.

worth RM 18.8K??? hmm the way I see it expensive. On a good day in States, some outlet do let them go at 50-70% discount!
of course is surplus stock and out dated model.
2 issue with Zenith is mainly cost associated
1) Problem with Zenith is they change the design freq, thus do not bring high resale value.
not going to sell it, sure at RM 18.8K why not.
if dare to risk it, surf around there are reliable grey market places to get better deal maybe at RM 16K or lower.
2) El Primero is a pretty complex movement, few watchmaker can do a good job. U'll have to pay a premium to get it done right with the AD.

its steel bracelet with a plastic face.

Oops... late 20s.. I still think late 30s!  sweat.gif U are the few that thinks this way man.

Jean-Frédéric Dufour is Moroccan? don't know his style.. didn't he come from Chopard.
I still thought Thierry Nataf is the flamboyant guy.

swatch watches, I say Unisex esp the model U looking at.
all swatch watches come with plastic face, like baby G.

orginal swatch != longer lasting. QC isn't that strict.
nice thing is if broke, an automatic can be fix easily!

I really ought to be sleeping, but I just chanced upon the most remarkable watch design in a very long time.

user posted image

At first glance, it looks odd, definitely not mainstream, somewhat reminiscent of Bulovas and Midos of the 80's. But look at it longer and suddenly -- like any good novel, any good painting -- you enter into another world. The use of circles as a repeating motive, the spare use of silvered markers, the minute markers like stars in the sky, and the contrast and suggestion of the sickle shape. The dominant theme of silver. Guess what the design brief was? Well it's a moonphase watch. My guess: Design a watch as sepulchral as the moon.

Compare it with any other watch, especially a sports watch, and you'll see how base, how crude the latter looks.

10/10 for design. A masterpiece.

No, no, never. It looks very masculine though. Saw a very new Submariner once on the wrist of a student as he was carrying his lunch tray. It looks great "live" -- very shiny, very recognizable.

omega at 50%.. No wonder didn't buy.. they are mostly New Old Stock?
I had seen ppl going to such event, most of the items are new old stock, other than those extremely expensive pieces.

LVMH sales, not sure.. even in SG sales not open to timepieces. Only in USA online! or at those Tourneau outlets.

when I was younger at 23yr i also anti New old stock, after so many yrs.. I don't mind NOS man! wear 2yrs also Old model!
Rolex even better model hardly change, old 1 and new not much diff in design

Nice read. I keep hearing about Spring Drive, but it's only now I bothered to understand what it is about. And I am not impressed. I wrote earlier that the mechanical watch has a simple spring, a simple gear train, and one of the most ingenious inventions of all time -- the escapement. The Spring Drive keeps the simple stuff but replaces the escapement with a quartz oscillator. This is very much missing the point of a mechanical watch.

LOL..
a ideal U would think others will come up...
nontheless Seiko pioneer it. Anyway, aren't escapement tech is key focus of todays watch making industry.
after the co-axial thingy.. CVD carbon/diamond/silicon usage are being looked at.
the up and downs of co-axial is fun read, rejected by Rolex.. PP making life difficult for Sir George Daniels gave him a ultra thin movement like 2mm to work with. Got it to work, still rejected him.
really ppl are harder to work with! sweat.gif

I was at Sunway Pyramid today and on the ground floor there is a watch shop that carried Grand Seikos! What a find. The SBGW001 truly is a handsome watch. There is however a hefty premium to be paid compared to ordering it from Japan.

This pic of the watch best approximates how it looks like in person.
