Canon 450D is considered entry level but i think i'll be better than the Olympus.
Depends on your budget and what you want your DLSR to do actually.
Olympus advantage is the smaller size

Wow..your budget very big range.
Suggest you to get a D90 or the 40D if you can still find it.
40D is about 3.2k with the IS kit lens.
D90 is abit more.
Go play with both or loan from your fren and see which one suits you
*
Adding on, 40D with 18-55mm IS kitlens is priced at RM3.2k. There is another kit, the 17-85 - but the 17-85 is much more expensive.

Hmm, I don't think you'll be able to cover landscape (wide-angle) and portrait (telephoto) together unless you opt for the 18-200.

Oh well, the best bet would be:

40D body (used/new)
EF-S 18-200mm (RM2k+-)
Canon Speedlite 580EX II (RM1.5k+-)

All should add up to about RM5.5k.. if I'm not wrong.

Good luck hunting.

Another option would be the EF-S 10-22mm (RM2k+-) and EF-S 55-250mm (RM700-1k+-). Will be a bit expensive, but for wide-angle, every 1mm counts. icon_rolleyes.gif nod.gif

I think you can opt for the above choice too. icon_rolleyes.gif

I don't think the D90's HD video recording will serve well, but if you need it, then go for the D90, but if you're mainly gonna focus on landscape and portrait, then I'd recommend the 40D setup as I've recommended previously.

EDIT: Can't your dad use your Alpha? laugh.gif if you ask me, a family using the same gears would sound nice. Unless you're planning to jump ship, of course. whistling.gif icon_idea.gif

laugh.gif icon_idea.gif u know i know la... tongue.gif ....yea..basically i will give my dad my alpha..and i use d90..but not because alpha sux or wht.. I just want use Nikon D90 which is an amateur slr. So I am just upgrading to a better camera icon_rolleyes.gif I definitely know wht im going to lose if i jump from alpha to nikon.. nevertheless i will gain something from Nikon too i believe.

back to topic... 40D...hmm i will check it out. Mind telling why 40D but not d90?
btw 40d abit over budget..3400 for body only...better invest the money saved into Lens....and btw it is year 2007 model. quite old imo...rdy to be substituted.

Any specific features u want? : Long story, see below.

I am a DSLR user currently using a Nikon D90. I need a smaller camera to carry around and I'm looking at the Nikon Coolpix P6000 as I can use my SB-900 with it.

My dilemma now is that I've read a few reviews on the P6000 and most of the reviewers said that the P6000 is not as good as the G10 and the LX3. If I get something other than the P6000, I won't be able to utilize my SB900 fully (sync only, correct me if wrong).

I know a lot of people are using the G10 and the LX3 in the forums but I'm not sure if any of you have experience with all three models.

I can get my hands on the LX3 and the G10 to test but I won't be able to get the P6000 via my sources. Please don't ask me to test it myself at the camera shop as I need feedback from actual users and I think the camera shop will mind if I test the cameras there for a few hours and end up buying only one.

So I'm asking the good people here, do you guys have any personal experience with ALL THREE cameras? Is the P6000 as bad as what they said in the reviews?

since you are new with dslr, then i would suggest you to start off cheaply 1st.
if you can get the hang of it then only upgrade.
camera body can get 1000D or 450D with the IS kitlens.
about 2-3k
if you like landscape then suggest you tokina 11-16 mm F2.8
or want more budget, 12-24 mm f4. around 2k+
for portrait..just learn to use the kitlens 1st. it can do amazing stuff.
still have abit more budget, get a nissin di622 speedlight or even canon 430 exII if can you afford it.
remember to set asisde some budget for memory, bag, UV filter, lenspen etc.
some shops might give you free thumbup.gif

I'm stuck between Canon 1000d and Pentax k2000/k-m. Which one do you guys recommend? Which one will be better in the long run? Or should I just pick another camera within that range...?? thanks.

In terms of performance, I'd say that both entry level cameras perform more or less identically, maybe one will edge the other slightly in certain aspects, but still, they're more or less the same.
What the Pentax has over the Canon is its in-body image stabilization, which stabilises images up to 4-stops(Pentax.com) with any lens attached.
Canon has the advantage of having a wider variety of lenses to choose from. This is of course an advantage if you're planning to invest in lenses.
So depending on what you're looking for, they both are very good cameras to start with. smile.gif
