Hi guys, tell me if I get this right.. if the unit has no internal Dolby Digital or DTS decoding, then if the user has no AVR to decode it, then its practically pointless to buy this unit?

I'm asking because a friend of mine is very interested in getting this unit but he only has a LCD TV with HDMI in. Can the WD output audio (in stereo) via the HDMI?

Many thanks!

something like that... (pointless if your movies are in DD or DTS)

if your TV got DD decoding via HDMI then still can hear sound..

you can play those mkv files with dts but there will be no sound coming out unless u are using optical out to a amp that has dts...

U need to use a program to convert from dts to normal ac3...

or u could always buy a dvico 4100 (rm1000) or the ultimate 6500a which practically plays everything ...

here a tip from adamw who mention to me about conversion when i review the hdx1000

"Meanwhile if you need to playback MKV with DTS, all you need is to convert the audio track to AC3 using audioconverter. You have an option to keep or delete the DTS as well. It's quite fast on a C2D, about 15mins for a 8Gb+ file."

Ok....I've tried to PM a few members...but no reply yet...

My hand are itchy to get one of these WDTV...

Trouble is, my Philips HTS (which can decodes DD and DTS) only equip with RCA inputs and a Coaxial Digital in.
Regarding the Coaxial in....I'm not going to spend on Toslink cable, Coaxial Cable and a converter...that alone will cost me half the price of the WDTV...

So those nasty RCA inputs is my only choice.

Question is: Since I'll be using RCA audio in, what will be my limitation? Will I unable to play MKV files with DTS.....or it is as simple as 'Don't download MKV files with DTS, only download those with AC3'?

Hope you experts can help me out...please...

thanks in advance

Hmm..thanks for all the reply.
So I guess its not suitable for my friend who just wants to watch movies. If I have to process the mkv files before viewing them, then it defeats the purpose.

Oh well, good thing I asked here first. If he bought the unit and finds out there's no sound, he's gonna skin me alive. ;-)

yeah playing video files from download poses a problem due to a variety of Codecs used.. only way to play all is HTPC.. but then it's not as easy to use (to turn on etc) and it's more expensive..

so function related to price... (RX gonna remind us again TVIX can do it all.. tongue.gif except RMVB)

To be honest, I've never seen a movie that does not have DD or DTS. The only exception are those US TV series which are sometimes in stereo. I'm kinda surprised why they chose to do this (cut cost measures??). They're seriously limiting the market to those with an AVR.

welwitchia, decoding needs to pay licensing fee, it will add up to the consumer cost

so can anyone confirm this DD n DTS thingy? where all the WD shifu went?

OK, some of us dun have the option for a Optical in....but our HTS or AVR is equipped with RCA plugs and decodes DD and DTS as well.

From the comments....My preception is WDTV CANNOT send DTS signals through the RCA plugs...it only can send DTS though Optical...BUT...AC3 or DD CAN be sent using the RCA plugs.....err..true or not?....(even though our HTS or AVR is equipped to decodes DTS and DD)

Regarding the Converting....thanks for the tips..

Sorry for the questions....just wanna make sure before getting it....hmm..money is hard to come buy these days...just wanna make sure I get what I want.

^ Hi Avenger thx for the reply..So am I correct to say the following?

Via HDMI to LCD TV (assuming TV has no DD/DTS decoding capabilities)
1) mkv (DTS) = no audio
2) mkv (DD 5.1) = stereo

Thanks!

If the player itself has the decoding function
u shd still be able to get sound through RCA but of coz it's only stereo lar

Even if the WDTV has internal decoding which I really dont think so, you wont get 5.1 channels from the your termed RCA. Those are for two channels, how to carry 5.1 channels? Only way to get 5.1 channels is thru toslink and HDMI.

Not pointless. You still get 2 channel sound ma thru HDMI or the so-called RCA pairs.

I'm sure once u get all these questions sorted out, you'll get a whole lot more sales. Heck I might even get one for my sister.

DigitalKL : So u can confirm that the WD outputs Dolby Digital 5.1 encoded mkvs in Stereo via HDMI right? Thanks!

RCA is not the correct term to use. RCA is a plug. Both digital and analog also got RCA hence the confusion.

How do I find out which MKV in my library has only DD/DTS?

i don't know whether mod will allow this .. but here goes..

The.Bourne.Identity.2002.1080p.HDDVD.x264-BLiND AUDiO..............: English, AC3 5.1, will play stereo on rca jack

Goodfellas.1990.BluRay.1080p.AC3.x264.dxva-EuReKA Audio Codec.........: AC3 will play stereo on rca jack

The.Hunt.For.Red.October.1990.1080p.HDDVD.DTS.x264-CtrlHD Audio: English DTS 5.1 - 1536 KB/s No sound

The.Dark.Knight.2008.BluRay.1080p.DTS.dxva-EuReKA Audio Codec.........: DTS no sound

Queen.Rock.Montreal.1080p.BluRay.x264-TRiM
AUDiO..........: English 2.0, FLAC from 24 bits 48khz PCM No sound (not even optical will play this for wd hd media player)
English 5.1, 1536 kbit/s DTS core from 24 bits 96khz DTS HD No sound
English 2.0, 128 kbit/s AC3 commentary with Brian May and Roger Taylor Will play stereo on rca jack

for queen u can actually click on the audio to choose which audio u want...

so when u go downloading u see dts as codec .. u know cannot play unless u have optical out with dts amp..(this same goes for the hdx1000 and popcorn)

but again dvico 6500a . semua boleh step down to stereo...normal rca jack... drool.gif
