Err. I don't really get you.
What do you mean?
You mean the size of the swap?
Or.. location of the swap?

Usually the size of the swap space is double the amount of RAM. But nowadays most of us have like 1GB of RAM so double the amount of RAM is not necessary anymore.

I'm not sure about Suse 9.3. But installation for Ubuntu + Windows is pretty easy. See the installation tutorial

I am currently using URL=http://www/pclinuxos.com]PClinuxOS[/URL]

I would say this is the best distro for Linux newbies. It just works right out of the box:
- firefox
- songs
- movies
- office suite
- bittorrrent, amule

It is a perfect windows replacement for me.

You can use the Live CD to install the distro on your computer.

I tried Ubuntu and PClinuxOS and I have to say PClinuxOS is a newbie friendly, the installation is easier than Windows, it worked out of the box except for DVD library which requires a bit of small effort to get it working thanks to Synaptic manager. I don't know about technical stuffs such as kernel, advantages of debian based distros and such, but I know that PClinuxOS just simply works. I greatly recommend this as windows replacement for newbies.

I used to be following RedHat since 6.x but when it moved to FC, the cycle was too fast to keep up with. It is ok if you are experimenting, but for companies maintaining linux servers, it is a tiresome job just to keep up.

Hence, ever since FC came up, CentOS seem to be my top choice in terms of compatibility and supportability. I must say, that I still prefer Linux over commercially available Sun Solaris and HP UX because I find that you can do more with Linux. Commercial *nix OS is good in terms of vendor support. If you need to run other commercial OS such as database like Oracle, Informix, etc, commercial *nix is still the best. Of couse it will cost a bomb and are generally not for home users.
FC seems to be too experimental for production use.

I'm also impressed with FreeBSD, quite superb in terms of speed. I'm using an old box with lousy hardware specs and FreeBSD seem to run quite well. But since I still like to stick to RPMs, I reverted back to CentOS. I still think it is easier to maintain.

for me:

aptget
debian
knopppix live cd
damn small linux usb-based

rpm
redhat fedora core

freebsd

for secure os;
openbsd

but there are always variants of *nix for everyone , and every specific requirement.

but i will be a debian follower ;

Right now (at this moment) I'm trying the PCLinuxOS Live CD .... I should say this one should fairly easy to try. It's quite 'light' also. Even the Firefox load pages faster than Firefox in Windows.... the difference is noticable.

Yup, with emulation software such as wine, crossover office, cedega, etc.

Nope, it would run just as fast. But some software maybe a bit buggy.

any opinions on Novell Linux Desktop?

I've got a near-dead WIndows XP HDD, and a friend tossed me a NLD 9.0 DVD. Was thinking of jumping ship into Linux.

Any opinions? Or any other recommendations should LND is not up to it?

Dont burn it as bootable cd.... just burn the image as normal. Coz if i not mistaken if u burn as bootable nero will add a certain file in there to make it bootable....

Correct me if im wrong. i nvr burn bootable disc before....

Last but not least pls DO read the documentation...... most linux distro got teach you one. Not sure abt ubuntu tho.....

You have to change the computer boot sequence in order to run the live CD.

This is how to do it.
Insert the live CD into your CD-ROM. Restart your computer, press and hold Del key. This will bring you to a blue screen setting page (eg. Phoenix-Award BIOS CMOS Setup Utiliy). Go to Advanced BIOS Features, press Enter, go to Boot Sequence, 1st Boot Device, select CD-ROM. Press Esc, exit to the main page. Go to Save & Exit Setup. After computer restart, Ubuntu logo will appear.

Living the Ubuntu life over here... It was a surprisingly easy shift actually, for a linux newcomer (though I'm not technically PC illiterate myself)... thumbup.gif

Smooth sailing most of the way on my semi-old-ish Fujitsu C2220 Laptop, and everything works well out of the box (except for my touchpad scroll)... But in terms of media playback, the things you'll need to install would kill if you don't have a fast and stable net connection... Feeling the heat right now, as I'm on an unstable free wifi hotspot...

Can't wait to get back to my Screamyx back home (even if its buggy, at least the DL speed's stable)... Or maybe even try the seemingly zealot generating PCLinuxOS afterwards - seems like fun, though I kinda prefer GNOME to KDE as default install... rolleyes.gif

Lets see how things work out... icon_rolleyes.gif
