Guys, a little question here.
Higher resolution with AA disabled vs lower resolution with AA maxed in games.
Which would look better? Would the higher resolution on an lcd monitor compensate for the need to have AA?
*
I would personally prefer maxed AA settings instead of higher resolution since the quality is definitely better and more pleasing to the eye with anti-aliasing on.

hmm with the coupon code the Dell 2408 is RM1922 with 5 years warranty, wonder if can get cheaper than that during  PC Fair. I know can get this LCD cheaper through forumer but prefer to deal direct with dell though

Got the 2408 wfp for rm16xx during last April's PC Fair. Unfortunately, in the two PC Fairs since, the monitors have not been on sale.

Thanks for the tip! I already received 1 unit 2209wa yesterday morning - bought for company use (with corporate discount). Was thinking of getting another unit for company for rm849 (which is even less than our corporate discount) but decided to evaluate the unit in hand first.

Using the 2209wa now. Firstly, the unit came out really bright out of the box. After calibration with a x-rite eye one display 2, colors look much better. I use a 2408wfp most of the time. The 2408's colors are much better than the 2209wa's. The gamut rating on the website of 80+% sounds about right in that the 2408's colors (which is rated at 110% gamut) are much richer.

I don't think it's possible to calibrate this monitor properly without a colorimeter because a 1 point difference in setting (out of 100 for contrast, brightness and each of R, G and B) makes a huge difference to the output. I'm using Brightness - 4, Contrast - 75, Red - 100, Green - 98 and Blue - 96.

The square base is more solid than the 2408's but takes up more space. Both monitors are height adjustable but the 2408 can go lower. Some people mentioned that the screen bezel is a bit thick but not noticeable at all. However the 2209wa has a nicer look as it's all black compared with the 2408 which is black edged with silver. The 2209's black is a matte black which is not as nice as Samsung's gloss black.

What's cool though are the menus which are soft menus next to the buttons which are dynamic - something like a nokia phone. Wonder why nobody has implemented this before - really cool.

Also the on/off light is blue (way nicer) compared with the 2408's which is yellow.

Overall - not sure if I will buy another unit for the company as I don't think the colors generated by this panel are that much better than a samsung or the even the LG TN panels I bought earlier in the week to justify the premium. Other brands available in Low Yat Plaza are just too cheap right now.

Maybe if the price drops to RM700+ (this may take 12 months or more) or if there's a good discount at the next PC Fair. The Dell rep told me that now Dell outsources their PC Fair promos to vendors so monitors won't be included from now on.

Hope the above is useful for anyone trying to evaluate whether to pay the premium for the 2209wa.

Contrast ratio is the ratio between the white and black parts in an image...The larger the contrast ratio of a display device, the greater is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks a video display can show...Let say a contrast ratio of 3000:1 would imply that the black level is 3000 times darker than the white... smile.gif smile.gif

Pardon my ignorance for not searching the whole LCD monitor thread. I hope you guys are able to help a little bit in buying a LCD Monitor.

From what I understand, 720p movies have 16:9 aspect ratio, with the native resolution of 1280x720, am I right?

I am planning to buy a 19" LCD Monitor but I've noticed many of them comes with 1600x900. The aspect ratio is the same as 720p movies, but what will the movies look like since the resolution of the movie is just 1280x720?

Will it have black areas around the monitor? Will the video stretch and reduce the video quality?(Reduced to what extent?)

Finally, is it possible for you all to recommend me a budget 19" Widescreen Monitor that is good for viewing 720p movies?

Thank you so so much to you all in advance for helping me out!

720p movies not necessary 16:9.
720p movies can have resolutions other than 1280x720.
movies with 1280x720 will be stretched to fill the whole screen (reduction in quality) or with black borders. it's up to the media player used to play the movies.
720p movies has high resolution that looks good on any 19" widescreen (unless the lcd is too lousy).

Why don't you get a 20" widescreen with 1600x900 resolution like Acer X203H or Samsung 2033SW? The Acer one costs almost the same price as a 19" widescreen LCD monitor. wink.gif
