Just came back from Lowyat, auditioned the S530D, S730D and S550 at 3 places: Edifier shop @ Level 4, All IT & Sri Computer.

S530D: I don't have any bad comment about this speaker, definitely a speaker that i want to replace my 'missing' C3. The satellites produce a very very good mids and highs. Crystal clear sound, very detail. The subwoofer produce thigh bass which is far better than my C3.

S730D: This speaker is very huge and the subwoofer produce very very good bass suitable for those who have a big/medium room. This one is not for me considering my room is small room i think will be a waste of such good speaker performance to be used in a small room. And i auditioned this speaker at All IT & Sri Computer. Donno why when i test this speaker at SrI Computer, i feel that the clarity lose out to S530D when playing the same sound.. Actually if S750 is arround i will definitely buy that speaker just because the 5.1 surround channel. But i think twice, better slowly upgrade.

The Fine Art of Listening

Purchasing a new sound system, or even upgrading an existing one can be a daunting task. The following hints and tips we use at the Edifier Research & Development Facility may well prove useful for you to consider.

I have several stages for you. Firstly, try to establish your budget. From here, one can then start to look at your musical tastes, choice of movie soundtracks, and also gaming needs. Bear in mind, that the choice loudspeakers will affect the sound quality more than any other component in your system. With this in mind, try to purchase the best speakers you can if they are not in a pre-packaged system.

Next, comes shopping at the store you have chosen. Try to pick a quiet time of the day so you can listen in a more relaxed atmosphere. It is always a good idea to bring along a few of your favorite CDs and DVDs for reference. Try listening to a few systems in your price range, or if you are shopping for loudspeakers, choose no more than three brands and models. This will make your final decision easier after extensive auditioning.

Now you have a good idea of what your needs are for your new purchase or upgrade. Next, I am going to suggest the critical listening stage and what to listen for. All of the following topics are important, and are in no particular order.

Detail

The human voice is always a good test for this category. How convincing does the male or female singer sound? Can you hear breath, texture, and realism? Make sure the voice is clear of chestiness, nasality, and sibilance. Musical instruments should sound very defined and embody as many elements of a live or studio performance as possible. Remember, that bright sounding speakers may sound exciting at first, but can become quite tiring after a few hours of listening.

Bass Punch & Slam

These sonic characteristics tend to apply only to speaker systems that have either satellites and subwoofers, or that are of a larger size, for example, medium sized bookshelf and floor standing models. Pinpointing punch and slam refers to the rhythmic force which you feel as much as you hear, for example, in a kick drum or tympani. These attributes are a good guide of speaker power and transducer quality.

Overall Timing

This term describes the accuracy of the musical notes embedded within the recording. A good loudspeaker system should be able to communicate the rhythms within the music scores with high precision and tautness. As a result, you may well find that unknowingly, your hand or foot may have been tapping to time of the beat.

Imaging

A rather complex issue regarding phase and time, a fine system will convey the placement of voices, instruments, and sound effects, in front of and between your speakers. In the case of higher end loudspeaker systems with wide dispersion, you will find that the stereo image will extend past the far left and far right of the enclosures. If you close your eyes, you should be able to sense the atmosphere of the recording, and feel you are actually there at the performance.

Ambience

The ambience, together with imaging, will provide you with acoustical clues as to where the recording was made. For example, if you hear a rather spacious echo from a recording of say a sizeable Orchestra, the chances are it was performed in a large Symphony Hall. The best loudspeaker systems are also capable of reproducing the “air” around the voices and instruments within a recording. This attribute further enhances the realism of detail and spaciousness.

Now that you have purchased or upgraded your sound system, I have a few hints that can make your listening experience all the more enjoyable.

Try to set up your sound system for the best possible chance of success. Try to keep your speakers away from corners and sidewalls to avoid standing waves and unwanted room resonances.

Find the most comfortable chair or couch you can, and place it midpoint between the speakers. If possible, try to listen 6 – 8 feet away, if your speakers are about 5 – 6 feet apart. These distances will give you fine imaging and depth.

Try relaxing and listening to the music or movie soundtrack, and not to the sound system itself. You may find after 10 minutes or so, that you are completely immersed in the performance.

If you follow the above advice, you may well find that music that was once used for just background enjoyment, has now become your primary source of entertainment.

Happy Listening!

Hey, I'm not sure if its okay to post these here, but i've got a few questions to ask. Noob in speakers here.

First off, i've bought a M3300SF today. I've seen alot of good reviews on it but I don't see much people having it. Was it a bad choice?

Secondly, what's the difference between M3300 and M3300SF?

Thirdly, is it normal to hear a loud crack every time i on my subwoofer?

Fourthly, when i plug in my headphone into the jack, there is still sound coming out from my main speakers. Why's that?

Yup that's all. Sorry for asking too much but as far as I've used it (the whole day), the speakers are awesome! Thanks in advance! icon_rolleyes.gif

Yeah, last time when i bought my S530D i also have the same consideration. S730D definately have a more powerful satellite and woofer. But in term of sound clarity, i think is quite the same.

Bro, 2.1 speaker has 2 satelites speaker and 1 subwoofer.

5.1 speaker has 5 sattelites. 2 front. 2 rear and 1 center. And 1 subwoofer.

Consider the 0.1 as subwoofer. the rest are sattelites.

Wah lao eh... shockk really NBTD aaa... compile that list of who posted... dont know spend how many nights there...

Anyway,
Im still waiting for Edifier to release a brand new hi-def series speaker. Edifier gonna stop after S2000? Not gonna released an updated version aa? At least release another update S3000 la. 100w, 1" tweeter 6.5" midbass. Add a sub if can, then even if RM1.5k also quite worth it. My S2000 already 2 years and most likely will last another 2-3yrs before the rubber start giving away.

1. Don worry bro..coz it is quite new in the market (around 2 months old only compare to m3300 3 years old)
2. More or less the same. Only the appearance of the satellite are different. Becoz previously, some users feels that m3300 sound too bright, therefore Edifier engineer tune the m3300sf' satellite abit to suit different ppl taste.
3. Yes. It is common for most of the multimedia speakers.
4. This is to prevent the user to un-plug the earphone accidentally, if volume too loud it may spoil the speakers

Hope my reply can clear some of ur questions. Enjoy ur speaker.

Thanks alot man. I feel more relieved now. I thought mah speakers were already spoilt after i bought it. haha. But about the 4th answer, anyway to mute the main speakers completely while listening to your headphones? If its impossible, then its okay.

the M3300 remote control is designed that way, so that when u plug in headphone, u need to press the mute button to mute the speaker. without this feature, some user sometimes "shock" when they plugged out their headset because of louder sound from speaker. now u know why got the mute button right there in the remote. laugh.gif
