E yup. UVB 5.0 but if you wanna FREE source of UVB lights then the SUN lights is the best and natural UVB rays. 30 minutes per day already beneficial to your turtles.

Anyway where you from? Where did you get you turtle? Hmm wonder if I can get one..

~~Uzairi - Does Chinese Stripped Neck Turtle same as Chinese Golden Thread Turtle? Because they do look like maybe a lot of name yet their scientific name is same. I really wanted this kind of turtle for so long.

I usually use floating plants like Pistia stratiotes and Eichhornia crassipes.

Turtles most usually nibble here and there and so floating types would be easier to clean and maintain compared to submerged plants.

For RES your size, small pistia is likely more suitable.
*

Thanks for the advice. I checked East Aqua in Ikano again but couldn't find it. The plants there weren't labeled, and the pistia photos I googled didn't look like the ones on display.

uzairi, do you think the first page should be updated with this local info?

Take very good care of it. Ocadia is quite prone to MBD if diet/husbandry requirement is not met.

Failure to comply could lead to deformation, which is not only evident in depressed carapace, but also disfigured limbs.

One LFS at my place keep them with Pelodiscus.

And thus the term short tail turtles was coined LOL!

I think this is local forum.

~~~ Tanggal kulit? Hehe.. your turtle is shedding, salin kulit meaning s/he is growing. Its not fungus..
Hey guys,
I'm thinking about getting a Star Tortoise for myself and was wondering about a few things after some research. Hope you guys can help me out here!!
1) Is it possible to use JBL Microcalcium and JBL Terravit(Since I use them for my Leopard Geckos) as supplements for my future Star Tortoise?
2) How long can a Star Tortoise last without food?(Just in case if I go for a vacation or outstation projects)
3) How often do you need to bask them?
4) Will it be alright if it is kept in a room that has temperature drop at night to around 20 degrees or so?
Thanks in advance! smile.gif
1) Yes
2) Answer depends on size of specimen you getting !! Larger one last longer without food and water (But not advise-able)
3) 1/2 to 1 hr everyday will be best
4) If they can warm up to say 30 - 35 oC after that should be OK
what's the reason behind? Noon or afternoon can? does sun during noon/afternoon 'gives' more UVA & UVB ?
is the suppliment vitamin D3 available?
sorry... if i ask noob questions.
Thanks a lot samperth, can you roughly let me know how well can they thrive without food/water. Assuming if I classify them in Hatchlings, Juveniles, Sub-adults, Adults...
Another question is that is it actually alright if I use normal low voltage light bulbs for heating purposes?
Thanks again!! smile.gif
the bigger they are, the longer they can tolerate interval between meals. however, it is advisable that drinking water is provided all the times inside the enclosure.
normal feeding schedule is every day for hatchling, every other day for juveniles, 3-4 times weekly for adults.
energy saving bulbs don't produce enough heat. use tungsten filament 60W and above. i recommend the usage of 100W spot, so as to create temperature gradient inside the enclosure.
Thanks for your reply and yes, I was referring to Tungsten Filaments.
The next question would be the problem of having light in the enclosure during night time. I'm planning to use a bulb to heat up the enclosure since there will be a temp drop at night, was thinking about compensating. Will the light disturb my future ST? Please advice. smile.gif
hiding places would solve your problem. CB animals usually can't be bothered.
anyway, if you're willing to spend a little more, there are 2 other options;
i) infrared bulb. reptiles can't see red light the way we do, so this one does not disturb their day-night cycle. costs a little less than rm20 and does not last that long.
ii) ceramic heater. does not produce light. quite expensive and requires special fixing.
About this temperature gradient, is it necessary to prepare a basking lamp if the tank is put indoors in a Malaysian home without aircond?
I notice that my turtles bask despite not having one.. although I haven't measured how long smile.gif
Just to add a bit on camillenoir's - For hatchlings i usually feed at least twice with smaller ration daily to about 6 - 9 mths of age !!
For healthy adults even once a week is OK for short period ie a month !!
As for the water part , if enclosure is too small ie guppy plastic tank used
If the water emptied on to the substrate (sawdust , peat , repti bark)will create a humid surrounding that is deadly if kept that way for prolong period (owner away for vacation) ............
Just be logic when it come to pets , you be the judge !!!!
Yup. owner got to be the judge.
Either provide suitable husbandry requirements or don't ever go on long vacation.
They could do without, but do better with one, as heat source would really boost up metabolism, improve appetite and is beneficial to overall health. Especially since RES are naturally sun worshippers.
For ST, the light would help much in regulating humidity
Thanks, will keep that in mind. The missus is already going rclxub.gif over the stuff I'm getting for the turtles tongue.gif Maybe I'll pop by Ikea to find a clamp-on lamp.
I bought a 4200K full spectrum tube yesterday to replace the aquarium's stock tube, which has a nasty green tinge.
