Hi XsaintX.. I bet for 2 years old, you RES is around 4-5 inch shell length right. From what I'm reading, RES that reach 4-5 inch size should be feeding pellets every other day.
Have you tried to give your turtles lettuces? Its hard to start with new things such vegies for turtles as they get bigger and older. But who knows, just give a try. Just put 3 or 4 green leaf lettuce or common name salad leaves to your turtles tank. Don't give up. They will eat it sooner or later. Good LuCk~! Anyway you may try to soak the lettuces in tuna juice to entices your turtles to eat it. Romaine lettuces is one of the best to start with. |

You may search the nutrients contains in the lettuces. I never feed my turtles water spinach (kangkung), sawi, cabbage, celery or other than lettuces. I know we are Malaysian people already fix the custom that - kura kura makan sayur kangkung - heh.. But I never give water spinach.. But its okay. Can give a try.

QUOTE(skwerl @ Apr 29 2009, 11:04 AM) Damn... Azxpert, ur RES 1 year old nia but so big ??? Yep, they almost one year old, they are about 3.5 inch both. How big are they? 6, 7 inches?? damn.... my New res almost 1 year still 20cent coin Normally within a year, normal RES should reach their size about 3 inch ++, 2 years old size about 4 - 5 inch. For 6 - 7 inch shell carapace length should be around 3 years. Since you said yours is still NEW, of course the size would be like 20cent or maybe 50cent. By giving proper diet, goods light, good condition.. you will see within a year your RES will grow more than 20cent Added on April 29, 2009, 10:06 pm QUOTE(xsaintx @ Apr 29 2009, 07:23 PM) ya they're around that size. today i tried to feed them kangkung and they ate abit, probably cos i starved them yesterday. will try the romaine lettuces If can, try to give your turtles romaine lettuces or any other green or red leaf lettuce (the ordinary salad leaves that you can get at supermarket). Romaine lettuces much more crunchier, little bit sweet and not bitter.so small?! mine grew so fast! btw my res have very long 'claws' now...am i supposed to cut them or leave them as they are? kinda hard to clean them when they keep clawing at me...pain. LONG CLAWS show your RES is a MALE. I strongly recommend not to cut, trim or file the claws. Just leave as they are.. If not your MALE RES will lose his 'masculine' identity or not feel macho anymore. Long claws are sexual characteristics of a male and completely normal. Cutting them will cause unnecessary pain and infection. This post has been edited by Azxpert: Apr 29 2009, 10:06 PM |

QUOTE(skwerl @ Apr 30 2009, 09:54 AM) @ Azxpert For easy and correct way to measure your turtle, put he/she on a A4 paper, just draw a line infront of the shell and back of the shell then get rulers.Yeah, i think mine is closer to 50cents... dunno, gotta check tonite. When i got them, they were like 10 cents. and hey, i just read ur blog... very nice stuff. You said u lost 2 RES before this from ur pool? By "pool" i think it's outdoors? I don't think they escaped lah.... probably kena eaten by crows or something. long claws are male.... also, males are smaller lol wut Owh thank you for ready my blog.. heh.. I just blog anything everything regards my turtles. Yup I lost 2 of my RES, they are couple. Though the pool its outdoors but I put them at a porch, not at a garden or backyard that is open space. They not be eaten by crows, cats, dogs or whatsoever because they lost in heavy raining (4-5am in the morning), the rain keep on pour in the pool and the water level full til the top edge of the pool so yeah they jumped out from the pool together. Kawin lari maybe. So right now, I left 3 of my turtles and put them inside the house where I make indoor habitat for them.. I don't want to lose any of my turtles anymore. Its killing me deeply inside and frustrated. |

QUOTE(chephren @ May 7 2009, 11:26 AM) hello ms azxpert Hi there Chephren,i have to say that ur RES are very lovely. i have a pair at my house but they are doing pretty strange lately.. every morning, i put them on my balcony coz im going to work and at around 6pm, i'll put them back in my room the sun rays dont shine on them directly so i guess it is ok since they wont be that hot during the noon. but lately, they wont eat that much like before.only eat one-two pallets each per day. i feed them when im arrive at home in a different tank. is it normal?they use to eat up to 3 pallets before. at what time they usually bask? do i need to put on the light the whole time including nights? please advise Thank you for your compliments, anyway how big and how old are your turtles? Its is good to let your turtles basking under the sunlight. 45 minutes to 1 hour is enough for your turtles to get the UVB light from the sunlight. The best time is within 9am to 11am. No need to turn on the light at night (turtles also need to rest and sleep at night) but if you want to, you may used the infrared or night glo bulb just for heat to their basking area. Do you have the UVB light? If you do, then you don't need to put your turtles at balcony anymore. Maybe once a week on weekend would be nice for them to get fresh air. I'm not sure why your turtles eat less, maybe cuz they are stress or because you don't feed them enough or they wanted variety. Have you give them vegetables? lettuce? carrot? small insects such shrimp, krill, mealworms etc? A general guideline used by most keepers calls for the amount of pellets to be in proportion to the size of their heads (excluding their necks). Remember, pellets should only be offered every other day or every two days for yearlings and adults. Hatchlings or turtles under a year old should be given pellets daily. I hope I answered all your questions. |

2.0 is not enough to provide the UVB rays. Get the 5.0 26watt bulb ok.

E yup. UVB 5.0 but if you wanna FREE source of UVB lights then the SUN lights is the best and natural UVB rays. 30 minutes per day already beneficial to your turtles.
Anyway where you from? Where did you get you turtle? Hmm wonder if I can get one.. ~~Uzairi - Does Chinese Stripped Neck Turtle same as Chinese Golden Thread Turtle? Because they do look like maybe a lot of name yet their scientific name is same. I really wanted this kind of turtle for so long. |
