QUOTE(camillenoir @ Aug 19 2009, 09:20 PM) xcrue, yup those stars surely are beautiful. Praise than the cold harsh truth !!!however, it is our obligation to tell you that the mortality rate of captive star tortoise is above 90%, with bad husbandry as the main factor behind their early demise. to tell you the truth, everything about your husbandry technique is wrong. it also tells us you had not done any research prior to getting those tortoises. now, please do what sam told you to do (ditch those wood shavings) and do some readings on star tortoise care. |

QUOTE(dEviLs @ Aug 20 2009, 12:03 PM) no no no..no kangkung please..kangkung contains too much acid and will cause stone problem for stars Hay / grass have their own disadvantage as well !! Too thick n when damp - "shroom " will grow from there LOL Added on August 20, 2009, 11:09 am some say newspaper is not good as it contains chemicals and oil.. you can use bermuda grass as bedding Dust may occur on " old " Hay / grass as well ....etc As for the chemical and oil part on news , does not seems to affect mine to any ill effect !!! QUOTE(JustExotic @ Sep 15 2009, 09:29 PM) They used to be much more expensive !! The 2nd batch cost about the same as the 1st batch but I got more than double the number animals !! Some of the 1st batch's animals are nearing the 12 inch mark thus get more of the smaller one (2nd batch of 2+ to 3+ inch ) to "start" again raising them !! |

QUOTE(Human Nature @ Sep 16 2009, 11:52 PM) RES - Red Ear Slider or Brazil Turtle or Green Turtle @ Trachemys scripta elegans Depends who you hear the name from !! Added on September 17, 2009, 8:13 am QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Sep 17 2009, 12:08 AM) May I know who keeps their star tortoise outdoors? I'm thinking of placing mine outdoors coz the aquarium indoors is too small for 2 adults. Outdoors, I was thinking of using an old 3ft by 2ft cage, but trouble is with the bottom. Should I just place the tortoises on the rough cement floor or use those toilet mats sold at hardware stores? If you dont mind trimmed nails and a few scratches here and there , the rough cement floor is better and also easier to clean !!This post has been edited by SAMPERTH: Sep 17 2009, 08:13 AM |

QUOTE(blazin_fir3 @ Sep 20 2009, 12:02 PM) Selamat Hari Raya people. Need more details I'm in need of some help. Recently i just got a IST as a gift. A 2.9 incher. He is always sleeping but that should be normal for them and its still a baby per se. During some photoperiods, it'll wake up and walk a bit den sleep again. The problem is, he's not eating. After having him for a few days, he's only eaten like 3 times. 1st day, 1 leaf of sawi. Clovers & grass during our session in the morning sun. I'm trying to ask if theres any way for me to get him to eat. I've tried giving him hibiscus leaves, sawi, clover and grass. I'm really worried and I humbly ask for anyone's help. =X p.s. Just saw that his eye has sum liquid coming out. Don't know if it's tears or wat but he's still not eating. Aihs..worried =X Edit 2: Not opening his eyes at all and not moving during our tis morning's sun session. There is liquid in both eyes now, he's constantly rubbing his eyes. Plus he hasn't eaten and excreted in 1 full day already. What does these symptoms mean? I need help.. - How it is kept , substrate used (Before you got it and now ) , lighting , heating and enclosure ....etc - Pee , Poo history for the last week ?? - any other thigs you deem important As many things can cause the above - non eating , lethargy and watery eyes !! (One guy I know cook his Baby sulcata with a Exo terra 125W Solar Glo in a 2 ft tank ) <=== Bought a baby sulcata from Toby Pet , tortoise inactive and eat little , went back inquire and told to buy above light to heat up enclosure and WALA !! |

QUOTE(blazin_fir3 @ Sep 22 2009, 12:19 AM) Hey Sam, I don't know its condition before i got it. I got it in some card board box which was given by the pet shop. The previous owner or retailer or importer or exporter must have given (food/diet)or kept it in such shit condition till something very wrong inside to cause above from happening !! But i'm using newspaper as substrate. Currently using a 2x3 container with no lighting. Have something covering the top for shade and kept at a lighted place. I bring him out to the garden for a walk with shade nearly every morning as long as it is not raining. So he can always go hide whenever he's not feeling nice in the sun. 1st day i got him, he was a bit restless and i think hungry so i gave him a bit of cabbage (the only veggie i had at that time). Ate it all up. That was in the afternoon den he slept all the way till evening where i gave him 1 branch to leaf of sawi/mustard green. After that, activity went down - not opening the eyes, constantly rubbing with liquid coming out suspect to be rheum. Pee was normal but Poo is all white poo since i got him. Was feeling desperate so i gave him cabbage again which he took a few bites and went back to sleep but done w/o opening the eyes. He's still moving with his eyes closed cause he's asleep but after a while i check on him..he has moved. Theres a few times where he went to sleep on top of the water source i provided but after a few hours i moved him. Is tat advisable coz it's rainy season now and i don't want him to catch a cold or sumthink. But I wont offer to help SORRY to say (few things happened recently to cause my "free for all offer to help" to ceased !! ) One word of advice even to Vet may or may not reverse its condition if continue to keep or fed like you mention !! |
