Hi all d sifus.......my mom-in-law found an egg for her star tortoise...she have 2 pairs of stars...what shud she do to incubate the egg? what is the chance of survival? any1 here can giv me advice?thanks sweat.gif
*
Theres should be more to be laid and chances of hatching is close to zero unless collected as they are laid !!

* Reptile eggs - tortoise especially dehydrate fast (Star has hard shelled eggs so the dehydration cant be noticed unlike sea turtle or emys emys ) and hours after laid they cant be rotated !!

And like uzairi say they can lay unfertilized eggs !!

Thanks administrator, I am now finally able to log in and read all the useful advicxe given by our Malaysian aficionados. You guys are so lucky to be able to keep so many varieties of turtle and tortoises.
Out here, our Singapore  govt. only approve the keeping of Red Ear Slider as pets.
I go to Johore Bahru very often, and one day I will try to get a star tortoise back

*
Singapore used to be such a heaven for such exotic stuff (quite a while back ie early 1990s to even late 90s )!! In most pet/fish shop you will be able to see 10s of 10s of baby Indian star offered for sale (If my memory serve me OK I think 80-120 a pc )

Where in Malaysia then the most exotic is Iguana or Hamster ...

Hi guys n gals...Newbie here...Great tortoise forum, learn alot going through the Vs...Need additional info from seniors here, about manouria emys....Highland....Lowland...Brown..Black colour..Which is the prefer choice by the local hobbyist?? Pricewise?? Thks in advance for all the help.... biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif
*
Usually Black emys - M.emys phayrei Thailand upwards

Brown emys - M.emys emys South of Thailand all the way to Borneo and Sumatra Island

Ease/cheapness of getting locally will be the Brown emys

What do you keep at the moment ?

Thks Samperth for the info, between brown n black, whats the rough estimate of the price?? 6 month ago i was given a res...now i have 0.0.6 RES...0.0.1 H.Grandis...0.0.1 Box..... tongue.gif ..NOW kena "poison"  drool.gif  thinking of getting a land tort...Torn btwn a sulcata...emy...radiated.. rclxub.gif Again thks for the info.......
*
Brown can be anything from free to rm 1000 for large specimen
Black since can't be caught locally range from rm 500 n up
Where or who you get them from beside how many will also directly determine the price quoted !!

Radiated should be your best bet as price used to be the deterent from getting them !! Nowadays some black emys (adpost.com has one asking rm1xxx) has higher asking price than average radiated !!

Since your first land tort why not get something local n cheaper than all the above - elongated tortoise

When you said let it bask, let him bask with or without water around?
*
QUOTE(deathpion @ Mar 14 2010, 07:43 AM)
I let them bask without water but you have to be around and not forget, otherwise just a little covering up their legs would do if you are the forgetful type. Cheers.
*
Snapper (Alligator especially) are not the basking type unlike Slider , most AST will be uneasy out of water or water level too low

As for UV/Vitamin D3 ...etc just let some sunlight shine your setup if outdoor or bask them in water (since your AST still small )

Since all my AST are housed outdoor I dont have such worries - but you dont hear stories of them having MBD .....etc from lack of sunshine / Vit D3

Snapper are a lot easier to keep than other turtle in the market

Oh, thanks for all the inputs.

I'm housed my AST inside my house and it's kind of hard for my AST to get a direct sunlight.

If I want to get and UV light to solve this problem, what are the recommended UV light (watts) that are suitable for AST? and how long should I turn on the light?

Thanks a lot.
*
Just get the lowest watts and on maybe 1 hr a day or few hours at once , once a week

But not really needed for this specie

My dad (koi enthusiast) told me not to feed guppies cos they might be dirty, and said baby tilapias that are used for feeder fish might be of a better choice. Any ideas?
*
If those guppies are from drain then maybe. But if cull or rejects (platy , guppies , mollies or sword tail ...etc ) from fish farm why not - size and price wise .

The tilapia if WC from drain , will they be any cleaner ? Unless those red one CB for stocking pond BUT how much will that be per piece - 10 sen , 20 sen a pc ?

Most of my turtle dine on baby koi - rejects from farm at 1.5 - 2 inch for 5 sen each All my turtle do alright so far !!

Haiz, I'm going to broke. My baby AST ate non-stop!
*
Good sign its growing LOL
Do remember they will eat even more as they grow up !! ie a few kg per specimen per week of food !!

Try to wean them off live food (save you heaps in food bill ) - Frozen seafood or any meat item are equally good !! Try to feed whole item (even thou foul water real quick) but better for your animals

Whole item as in prawn with shell(no head and tail pls ) Fish with gut , Chicken bone in ...etc
