Hi guys, hope to get some advice here. I'm thinking of buying a 3.5" external HDD for storage purpose. Is it a good time to buy right now? Any difference between internal HDD + casing combo and originally external products (such as WD MyBook)? Does it require AC power supply or is USB enough? And since I'm going for storage purpose, cache size doesn't matter, right? WD or SeaGate or others? Or doesn't matter? Thanks a lot guys

Can hear the hdd like being turned off when the OS is still working right?

QUOTE(tech_frix @ Oct 9 2008, 06:37 PM) wargh.... i really2 dont understand raid0...! drooling reading urs comment bout raid0.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAIDFor those who are too lazy, here are the most commonly used RAIDs, straight from wiki. There are other raid modes:- QUOTE * RAID 0 (striped disks) distributes data across several disks in a way that gives improved speed and full capacity, but all data on all disks will be lost if any one disk fails.
* RAID 1 (mirrored disks) could be described as a backup solution, using two (possibly more) disks that each store the same data so that data is not lost as long as one disk survives. Total capacity of the array is just the capacity of a single disk. The failure of one drive, in the event of a hardware or software malfunction, does not increase the chance of a failure nor decrease the reliability of the remaining drives (second, third, etc).
* RAID 5 (striped disks with parity) combines three or more disks in a way that protects data against loss of any one disk; the storage capacity of the array is reduced by one disk.
* RAID 6 (less common) can recover from the loss of two disks.
* RAID 10 (or 1+0) uses both striping and mirroring. Meh.

Thanks a lot guys Well, all 3.5" external HDD would require external AC Power Supply. Personally for me, i would rather spend my money on getting one External HDD instead of internal + casing combo. I have tried one with casing before and getting a casing that is good would almost cost as much, if not more than an external HDD.

I can't seem to find it. Now I'm thinking what size to get Well, i guess the MyBook is actually the exact same thing with the internal 3.5" WD 1TB HDD. Just that it comes together with a nice case and maybe some cooling fins inside the case itself. So basically, its the exact same HDD, no matter you are getting the internal HDD + a nice external case or the WD MyBook. This is on the 1TB HDD though. Not sure whether the other sizes are exactly the same or not.

QUOTE(mADmAN @ Oct 9 2008, 06:11 PM) i used to..... to compare... single WD250gb vs 2xseagate 320gb RAID-0 alot of difference... loading times are significantly faster... but sadly one of the 320GBs died on me (few months only somemore)...lucky i managed to image my windows into a new HDD... which is the WD640gb raid0 vs wd 640gb....raid0 faster...but not by much...the wd640gb is damn good...performance on par with ur 7200.11 so imagine how fast ur 7200.11 on raid0 only problem with raid0....HDDs tend to die sooner Thanks a lot for your experience input Bro mADmAN Well, I read that somehow RAID-0 improve our performance, but the performance is only significantly noticeable on NFS (Network File System) and in some cases it could actually degrade the performance on us as normal user. It's almost similar like the case for AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) and NCQ (Native Command Queuing). So I was wondering how fast we can really benefit from it in our normal daily usage? HDD tends to die sooner? Aiks...

HDD tends to die sooner? Aiks... RAID-0 is like multithreading in processors. Say you have 4 hard disks, you RAID-0 them. You split the workload to the 4 hard disks and each hard disk keeps 1/4 part of the data(not necessarily, try raid-0 different sizes of hdd). Since you split the workload, you would get up to 4 times the performance. This is all handled by the RAID-0 processing chip. Fake RAID-0 requires the processor to handle the RAID, which is why there are performance degradation. My explanation is getting out of hand. What you need to know is, 2 hard disk raid-0 is twice as fast as 1 hard disk, 3 hard disk raid-0 is 3 times as fast as 1 hard disk, etc etc etc etc.
