waiting for 1TB HDD to drop below RM400.

If you are talking about internal 3.5" version, i saw M-Tech was selling WD 1TB for only RM399. smile.gif

Hi guys, hope to get some advice here. I'm thinking of buying a 3.5" external HDD for storage purpose.

Is it a good time to buy right now?
Any difference between internal HDD + casing combo and originally external products (such as WD MyBook)?
Does it require AC power supply or is USB enough?
And since I'm going for storage purpose, cache size doesn't matter, right?
WD or SeaGate or others? Or doesn't matter? laugh.gif

Thanks a lot guys notworthy.gif
*
Well, all 3.5" external HDD would require external AC Power Supply.

Personally for me, i would rather spend my money on getting one External HDD instead of internal + casing combo. I have tried one with casing before and getting a casing that is good would almost cost as much, if not more than an external HDD.

Thanks for the input. How about the cache size? Does it matter if it's used for storage? Any idea what are the specs of WD MyBook? I can't seem to find it.

Now I'm thinking what size to get laugh.gif
*
Well, i guess the MyBook is actually the exact same thing with the internal 3.5" WD 1TB HDD. Just that it comes together with a nice case and maybe some cooling fins inside the case itself. So basically, its the exact same HDD, no matter you are getting the internal HDD + a nice external case or the WD MyBook. This is on the 1TB HDD though. Not sure whether the other sizes are exactly the same or not.

just bought a new external hard disk from lowyat yesterday, my book home 1T, but when i access to it, the exact amount of space is onli 930 gb, where the rest go to?
*
If you check out the HDD, it is in FAT32 format instead of the normal NTFS. I got mine at 930GB as well instead of 1TB. I suggest if you do not need the software in the HDD, format it cause FAT32 does tend to feel slower than NTFS for me. However, do remember you will never get full 1TB. Something to do with relevant 1024bytes calculation which i never tend to remember tongue.gif

I RMAed quite a number of WD HDD before and none came back with a box. All of them always come back with a Anti Static bag only smile.gif

So, that being said, the Caviar Blue is the normal WD HDD offered last time? Does this mean if i wanted to get a normal 7200RPM hdd, i should get the Caviar Blue? And i kinda heard that the Caviar Green is 5400RPM instead of 7200RPM.

just go to ATE or Vienet...
they got it... smile.gif

I dont have any major issues with CZone thus far so i might just get it from them. My External 1TB is getting full and i need to get another one as a replacement. However, it does seem that the Caviar Green is a lil bit too slow to my liking and was searching around for Caviar Blue, but cant seem to find it.

Yea, cant seem to find Caviar Black as well. Asked in CZone and they said they are not talking alot of stock due to low demand though. Anyone knows anywhere that is selling Caviar Black 1TB and how much does it cost as compared to Caviar Green?

Well, in reality, how much faster is the Caviar Black when compared to Caviar Green anyway? Any specific benchmark?

It depends on what you need actually. There are alot of brands out there nowadays. I have the WD Passport and its ok for me as well. The same as those which i bought the HDD and case seperately smile.gif Buffalo seems to be a good brand as well.

In term of portable, what do you mean? That you want to bring around places all the time or just on occasion?

If you wanted something that is value for money and in the range of 500 - 1TB, then you only have 3.5" External HDD as your choice. I got myself the WD MyBook 1TB for about RM390+ which i feel is quite good. It should cost lesser i believe at the moment. I believe most, if not all are roughly the same as well.

However, do keep in mind if you wanted to bring it to places all the time, then 3.5" can be more troublesome. As you will need to bring along a bigger HDD (as compared to 2.5") as well as a power cord. And the WD MyBook comes with a glossy finish as well which might get scratched if you move around alot. I think there is a matt finish version by WD as well on the MyBook series but should cost slightly more.

Anyway, if you wanted portability, i still recommend 2.5" ones as you have a smaller package, and minus the power cord. But of course, price for 500GB 2.5" is roughly around the same as the 1TB 3.5" i believe at the moment. So, your choice here. In regards to the brands, i still think all of them are roughly the same. Just stick with those branded ones like WD, Seagate, Buffalo etc.

Well, the thing about those "Faster USB speed" is that you need to install a certain bundle software which i am not really fond off tongue.gif But still, good purchase there smile.gif

How do we actually detects whether a HDD is problematic or not? Is the WD Diagnostic Tool reliable?

There's also a 2TB Green Enterprise version that performs better, if not on par with the black. Sustained transfer rate is about 110MB I think.

Anyways, some posts back I asked about Datatale 4-Bay quad interface RAID enclosure because I was thinking of getting one but there's not a single proper review on the product. The brand is relatively unknown so I was a bit skeptical.

I eventually bought it by impulse since the price is so attractive for a 4-bay quad interface raid enclosure. tongue.gif

So I put two WD 640GB Blue (both are about a year old) and ran it on RAID0. Here's the result:

I've no regrets.  biggrin.gif
Don't have any other disks to test it with at the moment though.

Well, but we need to bear in mind the Enterprise Version HDD are way more expensive than the conventional HDD sold in the market now. I remembered last time that a 1TB Enterprise HDD from WD is about twice as expensive, even when compared to the 1TB Caviar Black.

I just bought a WD Black 1TB, installed and formatted it already. The hard disk is vibrating quite strongly, I can feel the vibration when I put my hand on my casing, is it normal?
*
Slight vibration, then yes. Not really strong vibration though.
