Hi guys, hope to get some advice here. I'm thinking of buying a 3.5" external HDD for storage purpose.

Is it a good time to buy right now?
Any difference between internal HDD + casing combo and originally external products (such as WD MyBook)?
Does it require AC power supply or is USB enough?
And since I'm going for storage purpose, cache size doesn't matter, right?
WD or SeaGate or others? Or doesn't matter? laugh.gif

Thanks a lot guys notworthy.gif

Well, all 3.5" external HDD would require external AC Power Supply.

Personally for me, i would rather spend my money on getting one External HDD instead of internal + casing combo. I have tried one with casing before and getting a casing that is good would almost cost as much, if not more than an external HDD.

Thanks for the input. How about the cache size? Does it matter if it's used for storage? Any idea what are the specs of WD MyBook? I can't seem to find it.

Now I'm thinking what size to get laugh.gif

Well, i guess the MyBook is actually the exact same thing with the internal 3.5" WD 1TB HDD. Just that it comes together with a nice case and maybe some cooling fins inside the case itself. So basically, its the exact same HDD, no matter you are getting the internal HDD + a nice external case or the WD MyBook. This is on the 1TB HDD though. Not sure whether the other sizes are exactly the same or not.

Ah, I see. Thanks smile.gif

500GB is easily used up. Especially for pirates (almost everyone? ph34r.gif )

If you have interest in movies and music, go get Rapidshare premium account, or an unthrottled BT connection, 500GB is easily filled wink.gif Especially for HD stuffs shakehead.gif

I'm getting myself a WD MyBook 1TB too. Online reviews show that the software included = crap and that the first thing you should do is format it to NTFS laugh.gif But if it shows 930GB that's quite a big loss. It should show 976GB unsure.gif

Ah! I've always thought that although manufacturer's 1GB = 1000MB, the MB is of 1024*KB. Didn't know it's 1000 way down to B laugh.gif

add another 15 to get WD 640 Caviar SE16 which just 240??
*
Seagate's 7200.11 should be better in performance.

640GB is just the capacity, not the performance :-\

dude...that one is comparing all the 500GB drives la.....

people are comparing the 500GB 7200.11 vs the WD 640GB...
anyway...to compare... quoted from V1
and my own WD640GB (HD Tach Long test)
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7444/640gblongxx2.jpg
and HD Tach Short Test
http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/4082/640gbquickti8.jpg
as u see...not much difference...

and when i bought the WD640GB it was actually RM2 CHEAPER than the Seagate 500GB 7200.11
*
Aside from the capacity, the specs are the same and thus it can be a guideline.

He asked for performance, I gave an answer based on what I know. I never said it was a definite answer, hence the word should.

Agreed that the difference is not much; but if you transfer huge amount of data, it should be noticeable.

I just got my WD MyBook 1TB this afternoon. Just ran a diagnostic test using WD's own diagnostic tool.

Not even 30 minutes later...

Bloody unlucky sleep.gif Gonna stay away from WD for future purchases

Added on October 24, 2008, 7:40 amGah. I ran a CHKDSK /R and no bad sectors were detected. Now running WD's diagnostics again; 1 hour into the test, it's still going on rclxub.gif

Similar case to my current internal HDD - chkdsk detects 4kb on bad sector, Dell's diagnostics pick up nothing doh.gif GAH!
