sygic's maps are pretty outdated, it didnt actually have the directions to my place as well, so i literally need to "fly" to my place.

i'm still waiting for tom tom to be official, hopefully the maps are better

just try out the sygic navigation in kl...it was ok..the direction was ok and there was no lagging...if there is..maybe not much...make sure it is complete connected to the signal...for the poi...there many places...and the road are updated..for my experience i would give 8/10 for sygic...

IPhone GPS has a tiny antenna, if u want good signal u must ensure it has a clear view of the sky. Mount that IPhone on ur windscreen.

Sygic is not bad IMO. It's feature-loaded, routing is good, and map coverage is decent.

Wishing there will be an app that uses Garmin map or Openstreet, so Malsingmap or Malfreemap can be used. Roadee uses Openstreemap, but it's online and current Openstreemap Malaysian map only covers 10%. Better stick to Sygic's Teleatlas map with 50% coverage.

Fortunately u can still add POIs. If u Google around, u will find that u can easily add custom POIs into Sygic app.

I've managed to import most POIs from Malfreemap into my Sygic app, now happily having 100,000 POIs.

bro kindly do let us know the guide for it...thanks..

Ya.. But i thought tomtom map & Sygic is the same.. As, both map is provided by Tele Athlas... I still think that our local maping community malsing, malfree etc.. cover the most complete map...

I did a plenty of steps for Malfreemap POI conversion into Sygic, mainly importing from the map and mapping POI categories to Sygic-like categories. To cut short, I have created files to be installed under the following folders in Sygic app:

upi files under var/mobile/Applications/<app id>/<Sygic app>/map/mys
bmp files under var/mobile/Applications/<app id>/<Sygic app>/res/icons

Note :
1. Rename sygicMfmPoi.jpg to sygicMfmPoi.rar, and extract
2. To install, SSH into ur IPhone, or use DiskAid
3. Start Sygic app, then select "Manage POI", then select "View/Hide POI", u'll see the new POIs with "2" behind the name eg "Food2". I added "2" to differentiate it from default POIs.

I only use v1.62 map as v.1.6.3 map onwards uses Garmin NT format which can no longer be converted to text-based MP file. I don't convert road POIs and smaller POIs, only important POIs.

I Hope Malfreemap guys won't mind if I post it here sweat.gif For starters, list of gas stations, banks, and restaurants.

For tomtom, it took my 3GS os3.01 approx 3mins or so despite standing out under clear skies. is there any other ways to lock faster? i did toggle on 3G, Edge, & Location. Contrary, Google Maps just took <1min to lock with same settings though...

is there a way to tweak iphone's gps settings? i mean just like Symbian's or WMobile's maybe...eg can en/dis-able Assisted GPS, etc...

I tried iGo but worse...took forever!!

i dont think so...thats pretty wierd..well i have sygic on m 3g and it take like a min or less to receive the connection while driving..how come yours that long...?have check the settings..??

yeah definitely. it will need the connection of your gprs/edge/3g or wifi to function.
it aint like garmin where everything is stored inside the app itself.

first of all, any questions on GPS usage should be posted HERE

do make a search before opening new threads.

next, only apps such as Sygic, TomTom (not available for Asia region yet) for iPhone are similar to Garmin when comes to non-additional data charges while utilizing their GPS routing function.

data usage will only incur for the Maps application when the routing function is used (loading maps), or when triangulating your current position in places where satellite signal is not available. other than that, it's free.

I tried Sygic during the holidays

Travel frm KL to Desaru without any problem and my car have V-Kool as well

Signal was strong throughout even in small town like Kulai

The voice were clear (American voice) and once i went to a different direction altogether, the Sygic were quick to reroute me

So i am more than OK with the system smile.gif

yours worked even with V-KOOL tint? mine refused to lock to satellite (and determines my current location) even after 15 minutes. but it managed to lock in a short time in another car without V-KOOL.

yesterday bought it after my post above, my 1st impression was, wow within 10seconds signal lock inside my room. If you said that the POIs is not enough, well, for me i think is more than enough even the new petrol station that built on late last year also there... going out to town right now at melaka see how it goes, will reply here again with my experience.

I try out Sygic in Penang and I found out the route is not so good. Compare to Garmin, the route recommendation by Garmin is very good and normally use common route. Sygic still point you to the destination but I can't agree with the turns it recommended.

It is all about the map issue.. Not on features etc.. Again.. official local map provider like malsingmaps for Garmin rules.. As u know la.. they only do Malaysia & SG map.. sure to be very updated ! Our only hope is that Apple allow Garmin format in iphone..
