the gps in Iphone actually is not a truly GPS that rely 100% latitude/longitude data from satellite. It is a Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) which rely on 3 NodeB/transmitters of telco and processor will try to calculate your exact location. (most of the mobile can only listen to 3 transmitters at a time, or Rake Fingers)
I am not sure wether chip set in Iphone can breakfree from these A-gps and just received data directly from satellite. So we dont have to rely on 3G connection in order for us to get our location reading.
just my 2 cents.
I agree. iPhone is only using A-GPS which rely on telecommunication towers' signal to estimates our locations; unlike the Standalone GPS where it fully utilise the satellites' position to lock our position. That's why you still can use your iPhone's A-GPS indoor because you can only use Standalone GPS outdoor under the clear sky.I am not sure wether chip set in Iphone can breakfree from these A-gps and just received data directly from satellite. Some phone like HTC Touch Pro uses both A-GPS and Standalone GPS. Thus, when it failed to acquire satellites signals, it will ustilise the A-GPS. It uses the Standalone GPS in first priority because it's more accurate. If you are in an region where there are weaker telco towers, you will understand what am I trying to say. May be you will hit the wall by fully depending on the iPhone's A-GPS. I have tried mine and the iPhone GPS locations is about 300m from my actual location.
Hope that someone will come out with an bluetooth GPS device for my iPhone 3GS
