@sugen:
are you speeding at 160KM/H on a road with 50KM/H speed limit? anyway, just get to test Sygic on a friend's i3G today. and what i can say is, it's by far the best GPS navigation software for iPhone. i've tested it when i drove from my place in Taiping to Kampar just now (which took around 1 hour and 30 mins) and i can say i'm really impressed. here are my findings: 1. it doesn't drain the battery much (Sygic was on for 90-100 mins and battery only dropped from 76% to 50%), maps are detailed (POIs like petrol stations are quite up-to-date, even have specific lorongs for my housing area in Taiping, which is quite a small town) 2. navigation & routing is spot-on (don't seem to notice any lag in loading my current position, routes were computed quite fast) 3. i absolutely loved the landscape mode! there's even a day and night view which change the background colors to suit the lighting. never got the chance to test Garmin dedicated GPS device or Garmin on Nokias but Sygic has made iPhone's A-GPS much much better and useful. if it's not because of the price tag, i would have got one myself. i should start saving. (there goes the money i saved for new cases. hopefully TomTom's offering might be slightly more affordable. PS:sugen, is there a way to change the male's voice in the voice navigation to a female's? QUOTE(sugen @ Jul 25 2009, 06:41 PM) haha.. nola.. That is through a Replay of route save... U can set the speed of the DEMO route so that it can be view faster... This is another good features on Sygic... As for voice.. i have almost over 20 s language.. However, for English it is only Male voice.. Lady voice is for Cantoniese, Manderin, BM n others... hmm, i've yet to discover that feature. there's no English for female? Sygic should include that in their next update. |

@barteria:
QUOTE(sugen @ Jul 29 2009, 12:17 PM) I think our wrong concept of using GPS in iphone needs 3G/EDGE's data connection is rooted in our mind.. To make things clear, a general GPS device does not need all this.. Why iphone need this if u are using their native google maps.. BECAUSE, the google map is not store on the iphone.. Therefore, each time u use the NATIVE iphone google map for GPS navigation.. 3G/EDGE is needed to LOAD the map.. Tomtom, Sygic STORED maps INTO iphone... Same like Garmin & others GPS device.. So, NO 3G/EDGE data services is needed.. hope this is clear to all.. QUOTE(harmeet15 @ Jul 29 2009, 12:37 PM) agreed. for those who dun want to get charged for using maps, u hv da option of using offline maps from cydia or thr is tis new app in app store... OFFmaps same function as cydia's offline maps QUOTE(harmeet15 @ Jul 29 2009, 08:26 PM) boss.. in short, using Maps to triangulate your current position won't get you charged for any data usage. however, the routing function will require your phone to download the maps thus connecting to 3G/EDGE/GPRS services.firstly, u must understand tat u r being charged for using maps as a gateway 2 use da gps service...maps app doesnt hv preloaded map data hence requiring da phone 2 use data services 2 get da map... da other apps, they hv preloaded specific countries map data with da app...so, thr is minimal data used da gps, is always free.. its a chip in da phone which connects to certain satellites to determine ur location... its da app which u hv which determines whether u r being charged or not.. so if you don't wanna get charged for that, get GPS navigation apps from Sygic or TomTom (not out yet). or like what some have mentioned, Offline Maps from Cydia or OFFmaps from App Store. P/S: for GPS usage/discussions, the proper thread is share your iphone 3G GPS usage This post has been edited by teikwing: Jul 29 2009, 11:01 PM |

QUOTE(tinkerbel @ Sep 11 2009, 11:50 PM) Hmm... I just checked TomTom's website and it states maps are available for the following countries/region:- haha. i did the same search, tink. i thought it was out but i didn't realized it but to my disappointment, there's none for Asia yet. • UK & Ireland • Western Europe • US & Canada • Australia • New Zealand Have absolutely no idea how the others got their hands on TomTom Asia's map but I guess we'll just have to wait and keep our fingers crossed it'll be available for Asia or perhaps TomTom realised Asians are just too cheapskate to purchase something at that price and decided to forgo the market? *shrugs* @samngcheesan: how did you manage to test it? i can't seem to find iGo too. or it's not the US App Store? *curious* i need a reliable Turn-by-Turn GPS navigation app on my i3G badly. |

QUOTE(vlynn-662 @ Sep 25 2009, 02:56 PM) first of all, any questions on GPS usage should be posted HEREdo make a search before opening new threads. next, only apps such as Sygic, TomTom (not available for Asia region yet) for iPhone are similar to Garmin when comes to non-additional data charges while utilizing their GPS routing function. data usage will only incur for the Maps application when the routing function is used (loading maps), or when triangulating your current position in places where satellite signal is not available. other than that, it's free. QUOTE(DruidPower @ Sep 26 2009, 05:29 PM) I tried Sygic during the holidays yours worked even with V-KOOL tint? mine refused to lock to satellite (and determines my current location) even after 15 minutes. but it managed to lock in a short time in another car without V-KOOL.Travel frm KL to Desaru without any problem and my car have V-Kool as well Signal was strong throughout even in small town like Kulai The voice were clear (American voice) and once i went to a different direction altogether, the Sygic were quick to reroute me So i am more than OK with the system |
