how do i download maps of cities/states etc.?

anyway, just get to test Sygic on a friend's i3G today. and what i can say is, it's by far the best GPS navigation software for iPhone. i've tested it when i drove from my place in Taiping to Kampar just now (which took around 1 hour and 30 mins) and i can say i'm really impressed.

here are my findings:
1. it doesn't drain the battery much (Sygic was on for 90-100 mins and battery only dropped from 76% to 50%), maps are detailed (POIs like petrol stations are quite up-to-date, even have specific lorongs for my housing area in Taiping, which is quite a small town)
2. navigation & routing is spot-on (don't seem to notice any lag in loading my current position, routes were computed quite fast)
3. i absolutely loved the landscape mode! there's even a day and night view which change the background colors to suit the lighting.

never got the chance to test Garmin dedicated GPS device or Garmin on Nokias but Sygic has made iPhone's A-GPS much much better and useful.

if it's not because of the price tag, i would have got one myself. i should start saving. (there goes the money i saved for new cases. )

hopefully TomTom's offering might be slightly more affordable.

PS:sugen, is there a way to change the male's voice in the voice navigation to a female's?

hmm, i've yet to discover that feature. there's no English for female? Sygic should include that in their next update. anyway, thanks!

in short, using Maps to triangulate your current position won't get you charged for any data usage. however, the routing function will require your phone to download the maps thus connecting to 3G/EDGE/GPRS services.

so if you don't wanna get charged for that, get GPS navigation apps from Sygic or TomTom (not out yet). or like what some have mentioned, Offline Maps from Cydia or OFFmaps from App Store.

how did you manage to test it? i can't seem to find iGo too. or it's not the US App Store? *curious* i need a reliable Turn-by-Turn GPS navigation app on my i3G badly.

coz i'm always exploring new unfamiliar places lately (travel a lot) and a navigation app in my i3G would come handy.

first of all, any questions on GPS usage should be posted HERE

do make a search before opening new threads.

next, only apps such as Sygic, TomTom (not available for Asia region yet) for iPhone are similar to Garmin when comes to non-additional data charges while utilizing their GPS routing function.

data usage will only incur for the Maps application when the routing function is used (loading maps), or when triangulating your current position in places where satellite signal is not available. other than that, it's free.

yours worked even with V-KOOL tint? mine refused to lock to satellite (and determines my current location) even after 15 minutes. but it managed to lock in a short time in another car without V-KOOL.

Google Map isn't an offline map. you'll need data connection in order to route to your destination/view the map. please get your facts right.

sadly, there's none which you can obtain without jailbreak or purchase.

it's the same for Sygic, 20% drop for 1 hour of usage.
