QUOTE(SilverSpoon @ Nov 7 2008, 12:17 PM)
Sigh... after reading all these post here, i think i really have to tell you all la..

It's like this, it doesn't matter the male is in the cage or not (after the female gave birth).
The reasons the babies are being eaten is:

1) The mama hamster feels that she's not capable to take care of too many babies.

2) The mama hamster feels that the food is not enough.

2) The mama hamster is lack of nutrients.

3) When you touched the babies, the babies smell may changed (ur hands dirty/smelly/smell of soap etc), hence, mama hamster felt babies doesn't belong to them anymore.

4) And the most important is DO NOT ALWAYS LOOK INTO THE CAGE!! They will feel the babies are threaten!
So, they rather eat the babies for nutrient than being taken by predators (us)!!
So, when the babies is born,

1) First thing to do is cover the whole cage with newspaper. Yes, by doing so, they won't feel threaten by the outside world. Be gentle and fast everytime when replacing food. (When covering with newspaper make sure to leave a little air for them to breath k)

2) Place cage in a quite place. (place where low TV/radio volume)

3) You can only touch the babies after they are more than 1 week old. (Unless they are trap in an area where they can't by themselves) Even so, try to minimise your chances of touching them.

4) When the babies are born, always prepare extra food more than they can eat. This will make mama hamster feel that food is enough/she is capable to cope with her babies.

4) What else do you want? Remove the newspaper after 1 week lo.. Good Luck!

yeah..i agreed. Today, my pups are 15 days old. Eyes not open yet but already eating and crawling around the cage. Lat time my female hamster delivered 5 pups but 3 alive until now. 2 dead during deliver. Maybe the mother first experience. The female is 3 months + old.

Since the day they born, I covered the cage with newspaper and look at the cage until 10days. Every morning just put food and top up water only. I just do that...

Got to agree with them coz my mama hamster very skinny when i bought her then fed her till a bit fat. Like silverspoon said mama hamster is lack of nutrients. My reason posting the above is because, wanted to know why the fther bit the baby for no reason, first time happen. Before this the father very helpful taking care of the babies.

Well, now solved already, baby in their own cage as well as papa and mama.

Guys, I'm not sure if some of you notice but there actually are father hams who EAT the pinkies. They're a great source of return protein for the mum. So they're a great source of protein for other hams too.

Sometimes papa doesn't eat the pups and even helps care for the pups. Other times, mum chases dad out from the nesting area and away from her babies to protect them.

The first option is very nice but the second is tiring and even gruesome should the daddy decides he wants to do more than groom his kids. So the mama becomes tired and stress from having to care for her new kids and feeding them AND keeping the dad away.

Wild golden hamsters mate and leave in the wild. Only mama cares for the kids. If you force the daddy in the cage, he wouldn't instinctively know they're his kids. All he knows is hump and reproduce then be gone.

So to decrease the possibility of the mum being stressed out AND the mama and papa ham mating again right after birth, we separate the couple.

Just in case, guys, don't leave your daddy hams in the enclosure when mama ham has given birth. Even better if you remove before the birth.

Do robos fur generally look wet? Coz I've sandbathe Cotton and Candy twice today, they still look like they have been sweating! But they are very active I could prolly count the times when I saw them sleeping blink.gif , unlike Aloe rolleyes.gif ..

Look at what my 'alpha female cat' rolleyes.gif aka Comot did when I wanted to see Aloe:

She's still up there.. sweat.gif laugh.gif

Lol, Comot jealous is it? biggrin.gif

Robos tend to sweat and their fur produces more oil under warmer conditions. If you keep them in an area that is not well ventilated they'll look like they're wet. Giving them a permanent sand bath also lets them roll and keep their fur nice and smooth at their own pace.

I really don't know if my hamster is taking care of its babies...they're all over the place. And she sometimes digs on their nest or where they are...

I can also hear the babies making noise when the mother picks them up with her mouth...maybe her teeth are hitting them? No blood so far though...

A long as they're alive then your mama ham is doing a good job. She could leave them alone to die or eat them after all.

When babies start moving around, each will be at a different place than the other. that causes them to be "all over the place". Some time of the day, your mama ham will go pick them all up and return them to the nest.

A mother ham who brings her pups up is a good mother ham. smile.gif Trust in her la. The babies are her and she's the only one capable of caring for them.

They can take one or 2 as a TREAT and only once in 2 weeks or so (that's how often I feed my hams with cat biscuits. 1 each every 2 weeks. smile.gif ). And only holistic ones that has no garlic in it.

You need to feed them proper hamster dry food for staple food ok?

If it is too long I think you need to manually pick the baby back to the nest. Rub a spoon with their bedding, scoop the baby and put back into the nest. Do it silently wor..

aeon, I agree with iluv2zz, just tae a spoon, rub it all over with the shavings in the cage, scoop it up and silently return it to the nest. But don't frighten the mum and try to do it without mum panicking and stuff. Even better if the mum doesn't notice.

@odd_mochi: errr... Depends. I suggest you give your ham a few days to settle down in its new cage without being bothered. You just put it in an alien environment and it hasn't settles down.

How fast you can tame it really depends on what breed it is. What kinda hamster is yours? It's a good chance you'll get frustrated but that's the downside of loving a pet. Love = Patience + Sacrifice. smile.gif If you love it, show it some patience and sacrifice some time daily to be with it.
