Hi all, im starting V2 thread because V1 has exceeded 2500 posts. This thread is in full swing status and i'll try to update the driver list from time to time. once again to all 1520 fans, thanks for supporting this thread!

Disassembly guide
============

Introduction

There are several reasons why one would want to disassemble their 1520, and the two most important ones that i could think of are
1. To clean the internal fan and heatsink that get clogged up with time and can cause severe overheating issues during gaming or high cpu load.
2. To replace the factory thermal compound (CPU, GPU) with a high performance ones, ie. like the one i use in the picture (Artic Cooling MX2 or Artic Silver 5)
3. Replace some parts (ie HDD, RAM, CPU, WiFi Card, Turbo Memory, etc) with something more powerful and updated.

Before proceeding with disassembling your 1520, i must first remind you that no one here except yourself is responsible for any damages or data loss during the process, so please, perform this at your own risk.

Tools you may require
1. 1 Philips head (medium size) screw driver
2. Discharge yourself by touching any metal contact so you won’t statically damage the electronics
3. Optional: some small boxes for you to put the myriads (yes, it’s a lot!) of screws that are about to be removed.
4. A working space big enough to put all the disassembled components
5. A flat plastic tool / small flat head screw driver
6. Thermal paste/ thermal compound
7. Anti static brush

Ok, let’s get started. First picture is pretty straight forward.
Attached Image
You get a flat plastic tool or flat head screw driver, pop it into the small dent on the right side of the LCD hinge and the right side of the cover should pop right up. Be careful not to use too much force and do it slowly, else you might damage the wires lying underneath.

Attached Image
Once the right side cover is popped up, simply use your hand and pull the rest of the cover open. Again, be gently, don’t use excessive force and do it slowly. The rest of the locks are plastic locks, so if you bend it too much, it will break.

Attached Image
Highlighted with red circles are the screws/connectors you need to remove.

Attached Image
Picture 4 shows the connector of the Bluetooth module, which can be a tad difficult to remove because of the constraint in space, and also the LCD connector, which can be removed by pulling it straight up.

Attached Image
Now, slowly, remove the ribbon LCD cable from the plastic holders and work all the way from right to left. Notice there is a secondary connector (for webcam, mic) somewhere in the middle of the laptop. Remove that as well.

Attached Image
Now back to the screws. Please note that there are different screw sizes, so please don’t mix them up. Organise them in a correct way so you can easily find the right screws later.

Attached Image
When you are done with the above steps, it’s time to move to the bottom side. Secure the wires and cables and close the LCD. Turn your laptop. We are now at picture 7, which is the cover at the upper left. Removing the cover is pretty straight forward. Underneath the cover will reveal the WiFi card and if you have one installed, the intel Turbo Memory (as shown in picture). Remove the antenna cables by pulling it upwards while holding the cable close to the connector. Remember the correct colour and pattern for WiFi. Don’t mix them up with the WWAN/Cellular cables as shown in the red highlighted circle.

Attached Image
Now move to the back (as shown in picture) to remove the screws for LCD hinge. There are 4 screws in total. Two on the left (one back, one bottom close to the hinge), and two on the right.

Attached Image
Attached Image
After removing the LCD, turn your laptop to the front, and slowly and carefully, remove the LCD. Do NOT pull it up with force, make sure all cables are detached before doing so.

Attached Image
Once the LCD is removed, you can remove the keyboard. Unscrew 2 screws at the top to the keyboard. The keyboard may sit firmly behind the plastic holders at the sides. AGAIN, DO NOT use excessive force to remove the keyboard. Do it slowly because there is a ribbon connector just below the keyboard.

Attached Image
When you are done removing the keyboard, look to the middle (a bit to the right) and you will see a connector underneath called MB something (refer pic). Remove that in advance.

Ok, it’s time to turn to the back again. Now, remove ALL screws you can possible detect/find. Double check again and again until you are sure all screws are removed. To remove the DVD drive, just use the flat head small screw driver and push it out. It should slide out from the left.

Attached Image
The hard drive (handle with care) should slide out from the right. When you are done, turn the laptop to the front. The plastic arm rest cover should be loose enough to dismantle now. Careful not to use excessive force. If something is stuck hard, double check behind if the screw has been removed.

Attached Image
Phew! We are half way through. Now all the electronics should be revealed as shown in the picture. Proceed to unscrew the CPU and GPU screws.

Attached Image
Attached Image
Attached Image
Those screws are not removable, so don’t bother. Just loosen them up enough. There are 7 screws in total. After that, you should be able to remove the heat sink with ease. The GPU sink is removed together with the entire GPU module, so please so it carefully. With the heat sinks removed, you should be able to see just how much dust is accumulated. Brush them off accordingly, vacuum them clean if you have to. Don’t use water!

Attached Image
Attached Image
If you feel like it, you can also remove the fan and clean it as well. Notice that the fan is not removable unless you unscrew the entire motherboard.

Attached Image
Clean other dust around the motherboard if you want to with a brush.

Optional (Perform this ONLY if you have thermal compound/paste ready with you, otherwise skip this step or you will damage your CPU and GPU)

Attached Image
Attached Image
Now with a clean tissue, wipe off the factory (dried and hard) thermal compound from both the heatsink and cpu. Be gentle with the CPU. When they are clean, apply just a dot of thermal paste onto both cpu and heatsink, and wipe them off again. This should clean the surface and remove old impurities. Leave the chipset. when the surface is clean, apply a smooth THIN layer of thermal paste on the CPU's surface as shown in the picture above.

Attached Image
As for the GPU, you need a star head screw driver. If you do not have one, u can skip this entirely. The internal of the GPU should look the picture above. The procedures to change and reapply thermal paste are the same.

Finally, attach and screw everything back accordingly and properly. If you need to change any parts, you can do it now. The entire process should take about 2-3 hours depending on how familiar you are with the laptop, so do it with patience. The end result can be rewarding.

OC Test results by Demonic Wrath
======================
Specification: Intel C2D T7250 2.00GHz, 2GB DDR2-800, 256MB NVIDIA 8600M GT, 250GB Hitachi SATA 5400RPM, Windows Vista SP1, Forceware 180.84.
Note: OC'ed NVIDIA 8600M GT is clocked at 650/1300/550.

3DMark 2006 (1280x800; Default Settings; PhysX in Control Panel OFF):
Default: 3649 3DMarks
OC'ed: 5019 3DMarks
*Note: PhysX is turned oFF because it will cause the GPU to throttle to 2D Clocks if enabled. Not sure why this happens though.
*Note: If I have time, I'll tryout Vantage.

Dead Space (1280x800; Max Settings; Vsync OFF) Measured using FRAPS.
Default: Min 23FPS; Avg: 31FPS; Max: 40FPS
OC'ed: Min: 32FPS; Avg: 44FPS; Max: 50FPS
Maximum measured temperature: 78°C for CPU, 72°C for GPU
*Note: Vsync causes the game to capped to 30FPS. I don't think Vsync is required since it already runs below 60FPS.

Counter-Strike: Source Video Stress Test (1280x800, Max Settings, 4xAA, 16xAF)
OC'ed: 133.84 FPS
Default: 96.65 FPS
*Note: Video Stress Test is not a good measurement if compared to practical gameplay session.

Counter-Strike: Source 16 Bots (Same settings as above)
Default: Min 35FPS; Avg 57FPS; Max 68FPS
OC'ed: Min 44FPS; Avg 65FPS; Max 84FPS
Recommended Settings: 1280x800, Max Settings, 2xAA (4xAA if overclock), 16xAF
*Note: Minimum FPS happens when there are heavy actions. If you're playing in a server less than 16 players, then you can go for 4xAA without OC.

Need for Speed™ Undercover (1280x800, Everything High, No AA, No AF, Reflection On)
Default: Min 22FPS; Avg: 27FPS; Max: 34FPS
OC'ed: Min 25FPS; Avg: 30FPS; Max: 42FPS
Recommended Settings: 1280x800, Everything on High, Shadows OFF, No AA and AF, Reflection OFF)
*Note: Maximum measured temperature: 61°C for GPU

Crysis® (1280x800, Custom Config, Shadows OFF, Godray ON, No AA, No AF, Volumetric Effects OFF, Motion Blur OFF, HDR ON, Default view distance, DX9-codepath, SSAO OFF, LowSpec Texture (Not enough VRAM))
Default: Min 24FPS; Avg 32FPS
OC'ed: Min 27FPS; Avg 36FPS
*Note: It's very playable with the custom config. And definitely I think the GodRay is a better choice than enabling shadows.
*Note: Maximum observed temperature is 77°C.

Unreal Tournament III Deathmatch 7 Bots (1280x800, Sliders on 5, Hardware Physics OFF, FOV 100)
Default: Min 26FPS; Avg 36FPS
OC'ed: Min 34FPS; Avg 45FPS
Recommended Settings: 1280x800, Sliders on 4, Hardware Physics OFF, FOV 100 (Widescreen)
*Note: Since this game uses Unreal Engine 3, the setting and performance guideline can be used for Gears of War too. Remember to turn off PhysX for this game too. It will likely to take up the resources of the graphic card if enabled.

Command & Conquers 3: Kane's Wrath (1280x800, Settings on High, Shaders Ultra High, Shadows Ultra High, No AA, No AF)
Default: Min 24FPS; Avg 27FPS; Max 30FPS
OC'ed: Min 29FPS; Avg 30FPS; Max 30FPS
*Note: This game has a frame limit of 30FPS. Therefore, the max FPS is 30FPS only.

Fallout 3 (1280x800, Custom Config, Lowest view distance, Shadows ON, HDR On, 2xAA)
Default: Min 31FPS; Avg 39FPS
OC'ed: Not tested
*Note: I don't have the game with me now. So, I forgot the custom config settings.

you can refer the online manual: http://supportapj.dell.com/support/edocs/s...d.htm#wp1180014
there is empty tray beside the primary hdd. beside purchase second hdd, you might need additional screws and hdd interconnector.

blink.gif I read that sony recalls back millions of its SONY VAIO TZ series because of the faulty Battery. it seems quite common for SOny to do this, make me think twice before getting a SOny product.

dell latitude series have red also, other than black btw. i check their page pretty frequently

i just bought 1 inspiron, 1 latitude, 1 poweredge t100 server and 2 optiplex 330 desktops. i must be a dell fanatic

it seems that 1520 does not offer 8600gt after all, i guess thats reserved for the xps. i heard xps will be replaced by the studio xps with centrino 2 and geforce 9 series graphics card

the fan is most probably working if u can feel hot air coming out of the vent. the problem is that the heatsink and fan have been clogged with dust, causing very high temperatures at little load. happened to me once.

Yes. 8600M GT do support DMC 4 . I have played it, over and over again. The graphics are outstanding, i did post the images in V1 Thread. This is one game that are rich on 3D animations. I can get more than 40fps most of time during Battle scene. rclxm9.gif

i will get the details up in V2 thread in a couple of weeks. i think i did post a rough and basic instruction in V1, probably i'll make a detailed on for V2. signs of heatsink and fan clogged with dust are overheating and high temperature at full load and idle.

Good!! I'm also looking forward on how to clean up the dust and the fan! rclxms.gif

I've just bought 2 2GB Kingston RAM to make it 4GB RAM at Lowyat since it is dirt cheap now. brows.gif But now the windows states 3.5GB available for physical memory. That ends the upgrade for my lappie...nothing more to upgrade liao doh.gif

Oh my. More than 85C? My maximum is around 70C during startup only. Mostly during idle time is <50C and i use an aluminium cooler pad with 3 small fans.A cheap one i bought for RM20 only. I don't know whether it is doing its job, but i prefer that it can raise the laptop to a position i can type comfortably, so maybe there's sufficient airflow underneath that helps the cooling system. But i did notice the fan(inside 1520) are a bit dusty.

Yep, i have the same thinking when i was making decision whether to upgrade to T7250 . If by today price list, i would definitely choose it, cos its getting cheaper. But so far my T5550 is doing a fine job. No lags so far. rclxm9.gif

upgrade? u mean from choosing spec when ordering new laptop or after sales? If after sales i don't think they provide upgrade service.Cos they no longer bundle 8600M GT for Dell Inspiron line. Dell 1520 is using 8600M GT DDR2. Only Dell XPS 1530 and other XPS using DDR3.
What is your current graphics card,Intel X3100 or 8400M GS? Cos if you want to upgrade from Intel X3100 to Nvidia cards, the AC power cable is not suitable.

That temperature is for CPU or GPU? My CPU temp during normal web browsing, idle is less than 45C. GPU is less than 40C during idle time. during games CPU can reach 65C and GPU is almost 58C.

flex.gif The Nvidia heat issue with 8series, maybe we can keep the temp down so it'll live longer?

sorry if was not clear, I meant when ordering new laptop can we upgrade the default graphic card from 8400M to 8600M ? There used to be an option in the customization section but it's not there anymore. Just wondering if its still possible to get the 8600M still for 1520 series.

you can use either artic silver 5 or artic cooling mx 2, either one is good. i personally use mx2 and i got it from lowyat plaza. mx2 does not conduct electricity, does not require run it time and has a claimed life span of 8 years. performance is similar or better than silver 5. instructions will come soon on this V2 thread... haha..

I just re-assembled my 1520. I took it apart and applied AS5 on the CPU, and clean out both the heatsink for the CPU and GPU. As for the GPU, i will have to source for some heat pads as the ones that is currently on the GPU are thick.

A few dust bunnies were lodged in between.

When i first got my 1520, temps for CPU and GPU were fairly low. After a year, i keep getting warning messages from NHC, saying my temps have exceeded 80c. Even at idle, the CPU temp would hit 45~50c.

it's fairly straight forward and simple to dis-assemble the panels. But just have to be very very gentle and careful. Yup, that's the good part, no stickers anywhere.

So far the temps looks good....considerably lower than before. But i guess will have to wait for the AS5 to properly set to get the best result.

CPU idle at 35~39C. Haven't tested on games yet. Still gotta get a cooler to maximize cooling, since when i'm out of country, i use my laptop practically 17hrs a day.

i use for like over 10 months already, i do have a little bit of that problem, but just a little bit. wont even notice if you dont look HARD at it. the thing is, i do clean-up my laptop from time to time. probably that is just dried sweat, try to wipe it off with warm water cloth, see if it works. i did use force to wipe the palm rest area when i clean my laptop, cause the stain is really tough to remove.

For your info, you cant add in another hdd inside inspiron 1520. Unless yours model is 1720, then you may add in another hdd together with some other added components.

You can, however, upgrade your hdd to bigger capacity, like 320GB since their price are so cheap nowadays ~ less than RM 240. The replacement is procedure is very simple. Turn your 1520 upside down, facing its bottom part. There you can see 4 symbol of cylinder like shape. Use a crossed screwdriver to unscrew it. After unscrew(better keep the 4 screws properly), then you can slot out your original by pulling it out near the audio output or under the Card slot. The hdd will have 2 screw attached to the slot. Simply remove it and replace your new hdd and rescrew it back. As simple as that. tongue.gif

You can refer to your INSPIRON 1520 handbook also. There are picture explanation there as well. biggrin.gif

Now I just tilt the laptop higher so that there is more space between the bottom part of the laptop and the table, and also more air flow.

But then recently, my laptop experience sudden blue screen and restart automatically....once in a week like that.....suspecting overheating..... sweat.gif

I check my RAM.. is Kingston... jz bought mine July this year..Inspiron 1520
By the way, i think Vista not stable when running 4GB RAM..

Anyway... FYI, if u experience no sound in vista after making some windows update or whatever, reinstall the audio driver tat from dell which is version 6.10.0.5614 from R171786..
I did change the windows theme, then suddenly no sound.. so reinstall to audio driver would fix it...
forgot to mention... i'm running windows vista with no SP.... but i did windows update everything except Office 2007 update.

Question: My screen is running on 63Hz, izit normal??? Or graphic driver problem...?? so far nothing wrong... BSOD count zero...

yes, as long as u have the right CPU (right socket). our 1520 supports all merom and penryn (before montiviena release) processors. not too sure about intel extreme processors though,..

I've made a call to DELL. The tech support is quite helpful. And they offered me 1 to 1 exchange. I called them up at 2pm. at 4pm i got a call from the Logistic dept saying they're sending over a new Power adaptor,ETA on the following day before 5pm. Now thats what i called a very fast after sales service. notworthy.gif

I've looked up some other forums, this is a common problem for the Adaptor to become faulty.Even though only months of usage, and with GOOD CARE.
Symptoms are: GREEN LIGHT GONE OFF at the brick, It doesn't charge, Sound of crackling and bleeping. shocking.gif

take very2 good care of your power adaptor icon_rolleyes.gif

Its a 1 to 1 Parts exchange. nod.gif So i have to give back the malfunctioned adaptor. I got it just now,2 boxes arrived. One containing the Power Cord, and the other one containing the Adaptor. The box was already self addressed back to DELL ASIA,and prepaid. So, i took out the new adaptor from the box, and replaced it with the faulty one. Gave it to the delivery person. If you don't return the faulty one within 10 days,DELL will issue invoice of that particular item. icon_rolleyes.gif

you can upgrade the GPU to 8600MGT. try looking at ebay, make sure u get the part number right. i dont think dell will sell you the part. as for CPU, you dont need to buy it from dell, because unlike the GPU used in 1520, it's not dell specific. any intel (santa rosa & santa rosa refresh) chips can be used in 1520. just make sure u have the latest BIOS. i will be posting a guide on diassembling 1520 soon, so you guys can see what is actually inside 1520.

your heatsink and fan could have been clogged with dust, or the thermal pad has reached near end of service life

both? the only 2 components that gets dedicated cooling system are cpu and gpu. so they are (IMHO) equally important.

Ok one quick question, should i opt for Dell Premium Warranty which covers 3 yr warranty + some accident insurance.

Does changing the hardware, for eg Ram or HDD ourselve void the warranty?

Thanks.

haha. if when u wanna claim warranty change b the oem ram. juz that easy. actually i dont think will void the warranty. dont worry lor. dell techinician usually only will change the part that spoil and wont bother about other parts. as for my experience dealing with dell techi.

My friend had asked me to help her reinstall vista yesterday because of the famous blue screen pop up everytime she on her dell 1520 laptop.

According to her description, i judged it was caused by the pirated software she installed few days before. At first i attempt to repair vista with the recovery disk given by dell. Everything went well and suddenly blue screen appeared during the repairing process. At the second time to repair vista the blue screen appear again, and the error message (0x0000008E) suggest me to try changing the video adapter and disabling shadowing and caching in the bios.

Since i read an article about the problem existed in all nvidia 8 series graphic card, i want to know that is blue screen caused by graphic card? If yes would dell replace the faulty graphic card with new one without any charge? My friend laptop warranty is expired.

Thanks.

in my opinion. warranty alrdy finish they wont change for u. don do the repair or recovery. that actually not useful. better reformat and fresh reinstall. if the previously u use without any prob without bsod, den mostly juz software prob. juz try fresh reformat. mostly will solve ur prob.

I forgot mention i also try reformat but the annoying blue screen occured also. So i guess the bluescreen is caused by hardware failure.

Is that covered in my 3 YEAR CC warranty also? Too bad now is friday night, have to wait till monday for the customer support...... cry.gif

Me! Me! Me! Its Me! Hahahaha. Yes, i think ours are of the same batch. 1 thing i LEARNED now, never ever coiled the the cord around the BRICK. It seems that over some time, the internal wiring became loose. Cos , when i wiggle the cord, sometime it does charge. tongue.gif

I called them during the working hours. The tech support is very2 helpful, they'll ask you to do some simple test such as pluggin in the adaptor and tell them whats happening. They promised i will get the replacement adaptor in 2 days, becos i'm in Miri sarawak. It is a 1 to 1 Exhange Parts. Meaning you have to return the faulty adaptor right after receiving the new one. rclxms.gif

After calling the tech support, about 2 hours later, i got a call from DELL LOGISTIC , for an appointment for the exchange part. They say they'll be able to send it to me the NEXT WORKING DAY before 5pm! I waited on the following day, during lunch hour the Logistic people came and exchange the adaptor. Now that's what i called superfast!. I got a replacement within 24 hours of reporting. I don't think that other brands could offer the same. Most will have to send to factory and waited for weeks perhaps Months rclxm9.gif

The adaptor came in 2 boxes containing 1 power cord, and 1 brick adaptor with the cord. You take out the new one , check the condition, and put in the faulty one respectively for each box. RESEALED it and give it to the DELL LOGISTIC people. Tell them to wait. Because they need the box and the faulty adaptor to be send back to DELL. If you failed to do this in 10 days, DELL will issue invoice to you, as if u're buying a spare. whistling.gif

DELL great service. notworthy.gif

OOO, of all the components which I think could go wrong, never thought that power adaptor will be the earlier to broke 1! doh.gif doh.gif

Thanks for your reply and explaining the situation. notworthy.gif notworthy.gif But for my case, I've never coil the cord around the brick since my power switch is quite far away from my lappie. So I also dun know how can this happen. One thing to note is that I seldom use up my lappie 24 hours a day.

Seems like your're first time to experience their technical support tongue.gif , it's quite a satisfying experience cuz I've been "experiencing" it for 4 times till now -- all are serious hardware problem..... cry.gif

So I'm very lucky enough to have purchased the 3 Year Complete Cover during the time when it is still cheap - less than RM 500. The CC price now is very staggering! doh.gif But the weird thing is that only my 1520 will give problem while my another lappie 1420(used by other family member, not with me now) which comes together with my 1520 now is working like charm and gives no problem at all (1420 is only 1 year limited warranty). So, It makes me feel that since I've got the 3 year warranty, problems will occur from time to time... doh.gif doh.gif

Now for my case, the thing that I'm still not satisfied is their technical support is only working from Monday-Friday 9am-6pm. So unlucky for me to discover the faulty adaptor at 7pm Friday.....causing me unable to use my lappie.... doh.gif

No prob. biggrin.gif However i've read in other forums, there are quite a lot of complaints about the adaptor. Some of them have even replace it 4 times a year!. Now that is serious. I'm using the lappie almost 24 hours a day now, only 1 year limited waranty. What worries me now is our Nvidia GPU. shocking.gif

768 ka? Aiyo. If i knew the Nvidia GPU is in trouble, i would have opt for longer warranty during purchase. But DELL price for spare parts are damn expensive. cry.gif

Looking at DELL extend warranty program. RM768 for 2 years limited warranty program. I still got 5 months warranty left. If i choose to purchase the 2 years warranty, does it run from today or extends from the last day of my limited warranty. Anyone got experience with this?

I extended my warranty another 1 year too when it was close to expiring (back on July)....it also cost me close to RM400. But i think it's worth it.

This is one of the best laptop...even now...apart from the size n weight. I travel alot....to all sorts of places...and i love to play games to kill time. I can play every new game that comes out....Crysis, Dead Space, COD5....u name it.

The only thing that you guys have to remember to do is....after a year perhaps.....is to clean the heatsink. In my previous post, I wrote that my temperature hit above 80-90C. I was worried and took my 1520 apart, remove some dust bunnies trapped and slap some AS5 on it....and now? The temp never goes above 65~70 when both the CPU n GPU are maxed out.

By doing this...you are ensuring that your lappie does not deteriorate from the inside by heat. thus prolong the life of the hardware.

Temperature for my 1720 is always around 45-55 during idle and around 55-65 for heavy gaming.
It should be normal right ?

I dont think there'll be a cooling problem for 1720 as Bios A09 is not available for it. blush.gif

Ya gotta download the service manual from the support site.....and follow every step

Hard to go wrong....your fingers gotta be nimble. And read it once or twice, understand it first before attempting to disembowel your lappie. And make sure u have everything you need beforehand. Items like rubbing alcohol or your mom's nail polish remover...preferably without color, cotton buds, soft brush, tweezer and a can of compressed air (optional)

i might post some pictures i took when i was taking apart my 1520....

Oic. Eh. I think previous posts got tips to enable DReamscene for Home Premium. And i was able to get DREAMSCENE for my Vista Home Premium. Thats y i no longer crave for ultimate. Now i keep switching videos for the background. hahahaha. All my friends envied my desktop now. thumbup.gif

Oh no. I've compared to ACER extended 3 years warranty, cost for only RM198 for laptop bought at RM2500 or less. and RM298 For laptops bought at RM2500 and above. shakehead.gif But i don't know how well and fast they will handle the warranty claims. whistling.gif

Do keep a look at your adaptor since mine which I am not a heavy user also fail all of a sudden....but maybe the 1st batch got this problem, esp the REV 00. The new adaptor is already REV 04.

My battery had serious problem now.
The battery indicator keep blinking 4 times orange color and once blue color when my battery plugged in.

Just now yamcha i played my laptop with battery plugged in and i did check the battery amount it was about 80%. After that not more than an hour and my pc blacked out out of sudden! I cant turn on my lappy anymore coz the battery might be completely drained.
Now the lappy shows "charging" at the tray icon there once i inserted the battery, but it wont be charged properly and stuck at 0%.

My laptop operated with battery not even more than 20 times and i do remove the battery when my laptop operating under AC adapter.
And the warranty just ended 2 months ago(bought last year)....sad...
Any solutions?
The laptop battery is damn pricey nowadays T_T

your GC is just fine. i had the same problem with 180.48 driver. try 180.44 instead

1520 with 8600MGT can play NFS undercover. after OC, i can easily get 30FPS at 1440x900 and almost all settings at high (other than shadow, AA, etc.) so i assume non OC can probably lower the resolution and eye candies to play

it's most likely the resolution has gone off course. i see the nvidia icon on the system tray which notifies u a resolution that is not optimum has been set.

OC will reduce ur GC life, but who needs it to last forever anyway? im making full use of my GC before it's totally obselete for gaming in the coming year. just make sure the temp is in the "cool" range when gaming and u should be fine with OC. the way to test it is to run 3DMark06 multiple times, and it's pretty time consuming, BUT u only need to perform this once, because once u know the limit of ur GC, u can set it to that speed to game. every GC is unique, so i cant advice u on how much u should OC. but u can try to increase 10MHz at a time and run 3DMark06 twice to make sure it's stable before moving on to the next 10MHz.

what i meant was increasing the clock speed step by step, 10MHz at a time, test with 3DMark06, check for artifacts and temperature, then go for the next 10MHz until u reach ur GC clock limit.

well, i still prefer to OC, because i dont need my GC to last forever, as long as i can use it for at least 3 years is more than enough for me. the performance boost i gain is huge. from 3Dmark06 barely touching 3k (without OC) to almost hitting 5k (with OC), now that's a big number. and i can basically game at higher resolution with more eye candies switched on, which are added bonuses. temperature remain under control, max at 69C, which is pretty good. if only 1520 is equipped with GDDR3,..

but that's just me.. sometimes i take too much risk.. doh.gif haha

Yea by OC'ing the 8600M GT you can get a large performance gain, and can even pass the stock 8700M GT's performance. But in some games it's not stable and can cause the game to crash, and in some games there's no performance gain.

artifacts are screen corruption that happen randomly during 3D benchmark or gaming that you can easily see. it can be in the form of spots, patches, etc..

3/4? What do you mean?

Did you observe the temperature as you OC? For me, after OC to 680/1360/570 then the temp would be around 70C (while playing Crysis).

probably yes, because 180.44 is stable for me. 180.48 is the one causing all the bluescreens. try using driver sweeper to clean ur pc after u uninstall the nvidia driver to make sure all old files are removed properly.

I did a quick compare of my 1720 with my buddy Studio 17 and both of us are having Samsung lcd and his unit is much much more brighter than mine.
His studio 17 at Two bars from the start (FN+Up) while mine is full.
When his unit at three or center of it , it's totally uncompareable anymore. blush.gif

Is there anychance we could buy outside and change the LCD without voiding the warranty ?

what happened is that ur GPU underclocked (275/200) after a couple of minutes. this is a driver issue. what version of driver are u using? even 180.44 has this problem once in a while.

I'm currently playing 3 games with my 1520-- FarCry2, Need for Speed Undercover n REDALERT 2 and here are the symptops, hope to hear from your condition when gaming too:

- The laptop need a fan cooling at the bottom part, still blue screen+auto restart appear from time to time after playing for about 1-2 hours.
- If no fan, the blue screen or shutting down of the game is about 30 minutes. The game appear to be lagging too!

The graphics for FarCry is awesome, with most detail set at highest. Very enjoying it, just remember to quick save it from time to time cuz it will blue screen and auto restart!

As for Undercover, the lappie lags a lot when all detail set at highest. I just set at medium setting. For those who feel that their graphic look weird, just familiarize yourself with the graphic because you may be playing games like GRID, DIRT which have awesome graphics! Need to downgrade your visual expectation, haha tongue.gif The gameplay of Undercover is quite nice though.

There is no problem with REDALERT 2. Medium setting is enough for me already. This game apparently does not stress the lappie that much compared to the other 2 games.

Seriously, the laptop cannot perform its ability without proper heat ventilation unless you're play in a air-con environment which I don. even laptop cooler wont be able to cool down the lappie when under heavy gaming....it needs a big PANASONIC or PENSONIC fan blowing at it all the time...even that also I experiencing autorestart...albeit after 1-2 hours later. doh.gif

Other user, how is your lappie performance with those game ?

Battery wear with daily use is not covered by warranty....i was looking through their warranty information on mine too.

I have the 9-cell and it has 39% wear so far, used for almost 18mths....I am running my lappie without battery now....only use battery when necessary.

EDIT: Oh btw....Fallout 3 plays pretty well on the 1520. Graphic settings are pretty decent and loading times are good. thumbup.gif

How do you guys take care of the paint on palm rest? Saw some palm rest protection sticker but I'm afraid after few months the sticker will not stick on palm rest.

Any suggestions?

I use silicone keyboard protector and place it on top of the lower part of the keyboard.eg:left and right palm rest including the touchpad area. biggrin.gif
The touch pad is still working through the transparent layer of the silicone. brows.gif

After i installed latest vista updates,i realized something different to my desktop.
Its seem everything especially the font is getting trimmer and smaller. My screen is WXGA, and the fonts usually a bit 'fat'. blink.gif

Most computer shop sell it.Universal keyboard protector.and it fits our 1520 nicely.Get 2 then.1 for the keyboard and the other 1 for the palmrest. You can just overlap them.it'll stick to the surface like magnet. Hehehehe biggrin.gif

I've been using this lappy for almost 20 hours a day before the warranty expires. Will see whether any problem arise.
But will continue to extend the warranty cos i'm still worried of the Nvidia parts problem. Warranty does include the GPU right?

Just ran a little test on Dead Space™ by EA.

Software used:-
- Dead Space™
- FRAPS 2.9.4
- Windows Vista SP1
- Forceware 180.42

The settings are:-
- 1280x800
- Settings: High
- Vsync: Off

Results:-
Default clock (475/950/400) - 30FPS Average (Min: 22FPS)
Overclocked (650/1300/530) - 40FPS Average (Min: 31FPS)

Temperature (Max):-
(Overclocked) - 72 C

The game is perfectly playable using 8600M GT DDR2. It seems that the scaling is linear to the clock speed of the card.

Is there anyway to enable AA in this game? Even with the ingame AA (Edge AA) the game is still jaggy.

If you know what you're doing then there's not much risk OC-ing. From my experience (I've tried it on various Inspiron 1520), the 8600M GT can be OC'ed to at least 630/1260/500 safely.

As for the guide to clean your heatsink and fan, I think the manual that came with your DELL™ will have the details on how to clean it. As an alternative, you can check DELL™ Inspiron 1520 Manual website for the online manual. It's quite detailed and will provide enough information on how to remove the laptop components.

I am using rivar tuner , and i tune it to 630/1260/500 for the performence 3D , how about low 3D and 2D?

And how to monitor the temperature in game? Like monitor the FPS using Fraps?

Thanks in advance

There's no need for you to change the low 3D and 2D. When a game is ran, it'll change to Performance 3D profile.

You can use HWMonitor to monitor your max temperature. Open HWMonitor before running the game, then after 30-60 minutes, quit the game and check HWMonitor for the maximum temperature.

Is it good to use Rivartuner?

My computer went blank after restart , and i think this software is causing the problem , uninstalled it now , but it still blank .

I am using Vista Home edition 32 bit.

Hmm, I've not heard of Rivatuner causing blank screen. Personally I think another software or update is causing that problem.

You can try ATITool. It allows ingame temperature monitoring too.

Hmm, it's very weird. I've not seen such an error before.

You can try using Checkdisk to check your HDD and see whether there's any corrupted file.

Open cmd.exe and run this command:-
CODE
chkdsk C: /r

Problem solved by using the repair features in my Vista disk , it restore me to the point before i uninstall and installed some software ,so its really hard to find out whats the source of the problem.

Anyway , i installed the rivartuner again , and use it to overclock and monitor my temperature , it reach 78 max after about an hour of intensive game play , but it never reach 80.

I was kinda envy you guys are able to do it with 72C , ho you guys did it?

Unfortunately, the Inspiron 1525 cannot be upgraded to either 8400M GS or 8600M GT. It's motherboard is different from 1520.

Intel X3100 is an integrated GPU solution. It's different from the dedicated GPU solution such as 8400M GS or 8600M GT.

Alrite, here we go. I've taken the liberty to test out some of the newest games (and older games too) and I hope that everyone can use these for their base reference. I've included OC'ed bench too.

*Note: Just in case some of you are wondering, some of the games are borrowed. I do not own all the games. I hope that every Inspiron 1520 can contribute to this list as a base reference.

@alex, maybe you should put this list in the front page for future ref. Thanks.

EDIT: New game added
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 v1.03 (1280x800, AR 16:10, All settings Maximum, No AA)
Default: Min 23 FPS, Avg 34 FPS
OC'ed: Min 34 FPS, Avg 46 FPS
*Note: Game very playable.

WOW , there is a HUGE improvement!!!!!

And are you sure its safe to overclock more than what you proposed last time?

As for now , i dont have any major problem on my com , but sometimes the game crash.

Grany screen only occurs once , and my temperature never exceed 80C....

Really scared to destroy this thing because if i destroy it , i will need to work 3 months to buy another one.....T.T

Hmm, you may OC more than what I proposed last time. Every GPU is made different, some may OC higher. Some games may crash even at stable OC because it is too sensitive. From what I experience, if I OC too high, it'll throttle down my GPU to 2D clocks when I run some heavy graphics game or application. Maximum stable OC I can get is 680/1360/570. Any higher than that will result in GPU throttling.

HOHO , you are going to the extreme man..

BTW , a noob question here , do you know the temperature shown in the Rivertuner is the temperature of the GPU or the Intel core temperaure?

It just written thee "core temperature"

The temperature shown is for the GPU core. Actually for temperature monitoring I'd suggest HWMonitor as you can monitor the temperature of your CPU, GPU and HDD too.

I have an Ispiron 1520 and are experiencing some Issues with playing games in general.

I used to be able to play all of my games fine with medium graphics. (Team Fortress 2, CoD4, Crysis, CSS)
Now all of a sudden I cannot play anything except for CoD4 and CSS.

The computer can't even handle runescape... I don't understand how come CoD4 works yet less graphic intensive games cannot.
TF2 is fine in the respawn room, but if there are more then 6 people on the screen then it starts to slow down, and if there are over 12 people it slows to around .5 fps.

The specs are:
2 gHz Core 2 Duo T5750
3gb DDR2 RAM
8600M GT w/256mb VRAM
250g SATA HD

If anyone knows what the problem is or could be that would be a great help.

I've tryed defrags, fresh installs of the games, updating all my drivers yet to to no avail. The only problem I can think of is any overheating issue.

*
Try these steps:-
1) Download Powermizer Switch. Set to Maximum Performance for both AC and Battery. This will disable the Powermizer function for NVIDIA.
2) Download i8kfanGUI, then by using the program, set to "Force fans to high speed". This is to increase the speed of your fan. Put your hand at the exhaust port to feel whether there's wind coming out or not.
3) If you suspect high temperature, use HWMonitor to check out the temperature.
4) Can you also please state your version of graphic driver you're using?
5) Please make sure you have not overclock your laptop.

*
Don't OC unless you want to send your unit to notebook heaven ..
If you seriously into OC, a cheaper alternative is to get a desktop.. you will have more head room for OC..

Hello and Happy new year mates! rclxms.gif flex.gif rclxm9.gif icon_idea.gif thumbup.gif

I've got a few things to ask from you guys all Inspiron experts. notworthy.gif I bought Inspiron 1520 a year ago through Dell online. Due to the tight budget, I've chosen the least specs I could sweat.gif and now I want to upgrade any possible parts. I'll put this on numbers so it'd be easier to be discussed on.

1 - My processor is Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 (1.5GHz) 2MB Cache 667 MHz - I think this is too low nowadays for a laptop that Ill be doing all the work. I was thinking of getting more than 2GHz if possible but I'm not sure the replacement of CPU can be done? If its possible, what CPU dya guys recommend? Any ebay link? drool.gif or any seller... I'm studying in London now...no hope for PC fair..

2 - My current RAM is 2GB DDR2 SDRAM (2X1024MB), 667MHz Dual Channel - Gonna upgrade it to 4GB (to any brand of faster RAM, money isnt really a problem here). Any seller or ebay links are welcome! I could give the old RAM for free if I think anyone is very helpful rolleyes.gif I also need a guide to do it (Already download the manuals, but just in case)

3 - Hard disk. Mine now is 80GB and its definitely not enough. Welcoming any ideas... preferably good speed, at least 160GB (higher wouldn't be a problem, I'd prefer 320GB myself) Again, dunno how to do this? Alex, need your guide quick!! What brand? Link? ebay? any seller here?

4 - what the hell is Thermal Paste? AS5? lol but really...

5 - HOW DO I GET A NEW "T"? LOL http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj42/dr3fao/laptop.jpg

Thats it, I bought lower specs last year because of tight budget, now that I got some I think I wanna upgrade this lovely Inpiron flex.gif

Do help me, put the numbers so I could easily track ya?

btw, Alexnvidia, waiting for your guide here............. need to clean all the dusty dust!

p/s : I'd rather spend on laptop rather than on desktop since Im abroad, portablity (though 1520 is quite heavy) is quite important

I would give a call sooner or later, but would be better if I do it on my own....

London and KL is a light year apart.... (jk tongue.gif )

I cant seems to find any Dell services in London (Got to exist, just me not finding it yet)

@andicom, any 2.5" SATA HDD will fit into the Dell laptop. Removing the HDD from the laptop isn't hard at all. You'll only need screwdriver.

The HDD is located at the left hand side underneath the Express Card slot (this is where your remote control is docked).

thermal paste is used on between on ur heatink and proccessor. like it draw away the heat to ur heatink and ur proccessor will be cooler. u can use on vga with heattink too. it is like liquid but with some sensetive material on it which can transfer the heat fast.. normally it will get dried maybe after 1 or 2 year.
therefore u need re-apply the thermal paste or u can call it as thermal grease too on the surface of heatink connected to the proccessor or vga.

But if you get 3GB then you won't be able to use Dual Channel mode...so I think 2x2GB is a better choice... anyway, there's no need to get performance RAM for laptop...you won't have the ability to OC it anyway.. I think any brand (Corsair or Kingston would do).

the guide will come next week. sorry for the delays

u can buy T7xxx or T9xxx processors online, and since u r in london, u can get it off amazon or ebay. just make sure when u choose the T9xxx series processor, it is the santa rosa refresh version, NOT the montiviena version. our laptop can only support 667 FSB. replacing the processor is pretty straight forward. just remove the heatsink, unscrew the lock, reapply thermal paste (a paste that helps conduct heat from CPU to heatsink), assemble it back and u are good to go. (more on this in the disassembly guide next week).

as for 320GB HDD, there are quite a few makers out there. u can choose from Western Digital, TOshiba, Samsung, Fujitsu, Seagate etc.. i personally own Toshiba, Samsung and Fujitsu 320GB HDD respectively, and i would not recommend you to get samsung one (unreliable). fujitsu seems good, and toshiba is average. WD and seagate ones are easier to find though.

as for RAM, u can get either 3GB or 4GB config. 32bit vista will have problem addressing all 4GB of those RAM. any DDR2 RAM that is 667MHz and above will do just fine.

oh thanks, we'll be waiting for the guide biggrin.gif

Its so damn hard to find a T7 or T9 series with 667Mhz FSB, I only could find these :

http://www.techstore.co.uk/detail_104740.html

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...BC1JBT&v=glance

Notice the large different of prices between the 2. however, does it really make any different in performance? Talking about how intense I use my lappy is, lets say I use Solid Works and Matlab (these 2 are the heaviest programs I use I think), and several other programs (Photoshop, dreamweaver, vegas, netbeans...) I played games occasionally, like NBA2k9, COD4.. So, what would you suggest? I don't know T7600 is that expensive doh.gif seems like a waste of money if I put on it?

For HDD, I think Ill try find the fujitsu's first at local stores. I asked them about upgrading parts today, CPU, RAM, HDD, but they said upgrade service alone costs me around 100 pound (RM 500) wth lol I dont mind paying 100 pound or more for RAM, HDD or CPU but giving it for free tojerks with glasses, no way lol

for RAM, I'll try to find 4GB, any brand will do (as u guys said) Im trying to max it out and see how its doing afterwards.

thx for the info. oh Im welcoming any seller from LYN, I suck at ebay-ing (looking for stuff in ebay is not very entertaining doh.gif )

I don't think you'll see huge difference between 2.0GHz and 2.33GHz. It's certainly not worth the price if you're getting 2.33GHz.

I'd recommend you to get T7200 due to the price difference.

Sorry mate, i think i might have made some confusing statement last night. u can choose a T7 or &9 processor with 800MHz FSB BUT memory support is 667MHz. so when i said 667MHz, i quickly assume that it's memory speed that we are talking about. that said, u can also install cpus like T7500, T7300, etc.. (refer intel's table for core2duo mobile CPU, look for santa rosa and santa rosa refresh). i would not recommend u getting T7 with 667 cpu FSB, try looking for one that supports 800 cpu FSB. T7300 at 2GHz would be quite ok for your demanding tasks, if u've got the extra $, u can also opt for T7500 or T7700.

Windows 7 Evaluation

Computer Spec
DELL Inspiron Laptop 1520
Intel Core2 Duo T7250 @ 2.0GHz
2.0GB (2x1.0GB) DDR2-667
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
250GB Hitachi HDD 5400RPM SATA
Windows 7 Beta 7000

Installation
Installation took around 15 minutes from Clean Install. This duration is measured from the starting point (Copying files) until I access Windows interface. Should be faster if you're using 7200RPM HDD.

Drivers installation
I have only installed these drivers so I can use the hardware:-
- NVIDIA ForceWare 179.23 (WDDM 1.1)
- Intel SATA Controller
- Ricoh Card Reader

Software installation
Almost all softwares that was compatible with Vista is supported on W7. No suprise here since it's based on Vista.

All the Vista drivers can be installed on Windows 7. Some installer might gives an error indicating that the OS is not supported, but it is still installable by using manual install.
Unlike Vista, I do not need to install the Dell Wireless Driver to use it. It connected right away after I entered the security key for the router.

Changes from Windows Vista
I don't really feel any boot time decrease from my optimized Vista (I turned off services and programs that don't need to be ran at startup).

First thing I think most users will like is the ability to use gadgets without sidebar.

As you all might have know, Windows 7 now comes with mouse gesture feature for controlling the explorer. Dragging the window to the top of the screen will maximize it, while dragging it to the side will make it fills half the screen. This is especially useful for Widescreen computers.

The controls also feel more responsive compared to Windows Vista. And the taskbar is really useful if you're a multi-tasker. But it took a while for me to get used of it.

Windows Security Center is changed to Windows Action Center now.

Windows 7 comes with the adaptive brightness feature. This will allow the computer adjust the brightness of the screen according to the environment. I have not tested this feature as I don't think my laptop comes with a sensor.

Windows Experience Index scale has now increased to 7.9 compared to 5.9 of Windows Vista. My Inspiron 1520 got a 3.0 WEI for the score because of the Hard disk performance. Maybe it's because it's a 5400RPM SATA.

Windows 7 now features DirectX 11. I can't test whether this really is DirectX 11 since my hardware does not support it and there are no games released using DirectX 11 API.

Multiple folders can be "combined" into a single folder known as the Library. This does not move the file to the folder.

Updated MSPaint and Calculator. MSPaint now features the Ribbon interface but not much changes in features. Calculator now have the conversion function, which I think is pretty useful.

It's a fresh install. I deleted the Vista partition first then installed on the partition. I don't really recommend upgrading since some old files will retain in the HDD.

EDIT:
I didn't mention UAC in the review because I disabled UAC also. So, it's no different from Vista.
WMP12 seems buggy. It is using high CPU usage. (around 20% on my computer).

Boot into Diagnostic mode to test out the problem.

Diagnostic Mode
1) Turn off your laptop
2) Hold Fn and then press the Power On button.
3) Let it complete the test. If there's any error message, note it down and send it to DELL.

haha I think I know that, thanks anyway rclxms.gif what I meant is the lappy itself.

Will they cut the warranty off if I change the RAM (replace currrent ones with the new ones)?

If i not mistaken can claim for defects only. if your battery got problem such as cannot last for even few minutes or does not hold charge at all, probably they exchange. it is normal over time after many cycle of charging and discharging the battery won last as long as new.

what you do during that time? playing games or just put it on idle or browsing internet. if doing extensive tasks such as playing games, battery may not last long. but if putting it on idle, only last half hour, then battery got some problem la.
