Heuristic wise, its a toss up between Panda TruPrevent, Bitdefender HiVE, NOD32 and Dr. Web.
Detection, Kaspersky hands down.
Functionality, Bitdefender, Panda, Norton, NOD32, Kaspersky etc. (although Kaspersky might lacking http scanning which have been rectified in the latest KAV6 pre beta)
Resource, Dr. Web and F-Prot, while NOD32 is not far behind.
Support, Kaspersky has a very fast 48 hr customer support policy while Eset has numbers of thier staff frolicking multiple security forums to help out online users.

My recommendation: NOD32, fast scanning engine, extensive scanning with strong heuristics, good customer support, small resource. U might wanna try the 30 days full trial, and if it doesnt suit yr needs, go for Kaspersky. You got absolutely nothing to lose considering both of them are big name in AV industry.

Bitdefender has been around for quite sometimes, and no one can argue about the new improvement in their latest version 9. The HiVE technology is a step forward from other competitor while their scanning engine has improved quite drastically in terms of scan time.
The interface is alright, i guess. Nothing to complain about, but there's few thing i wish they had improved:
1 - The update requires core restarting every single time, and its quite annoying when you have to abandon yr surfing for 10 seconds every single time its finish updating, considering BD update their virus database every single hour and its even interrupted on demand scanning.
2 - There's a constant CPU spike every time i tried to delete big files (>50mb), and the real time file scan can be quite a problem, refreshing a folder with huge amount of application requires a considerable amount of time.
3 - Resource consumption still have room for improvement. There's few modules running background that i have absolutely no idea about their functionality. And there's even 1 module that check the CPU usage which took somewhere around 2-5mb and i don't even bother using it when i can simply press Ctrl-Shift-Esc and monitor it using task manager, and the worst thing is, u can't disable the module, all you do is hide it while its still there running in the background munching yr memory.

But apart from that, BD9 is a total AV solution with a good customer support and will protect yr PC satisfactorily.
But if its up to me, i take NOD32 or KAV instead.

i heard that KAV does take a lot of pc resources...if i want to use it, will it survive in my 512mb RAM??

512MB, thats more than enough. My whole company are using KAV under 1 yr license, and most of the PC are only equipped with 256MB of RAM and its working flawlessly. The best thing about KAV, the whole protection package are compact into 1 module, and it took somewhere 15-25 MB of resources and the CPU usage are very constant at 2-3% without any random fluctuation even during on demand scanning.
And there's one thing KAV does best, you don't have to bother yrself with anti trojan apps, KAV is one total package protecting yr PC from Virus, worms, trojan and considerable amount of malicious program. Most of other AV still requires a 3rd party trojan killer, as it only equipped with good AV but weak anti trojan, e.g: NOD32, F-Prot.

jz change from nod32 back to kaspersky. and guess what i've got 4 virus that my nod32 fail to check which my kaspersky did and i've alwiz make sure my nod32 is up to date.

nod32 is less resouce hogging then kaspersky but i think i'm gonna stick with kaspersky for the time being. i feel safer smile.gif

and jz to share with you guys i install the trial version fo kaspersky in my office and it mannage to weed out 7 virus that the avg fail to detect before this. so i'm pretty much convince that kaspersky has the best detection rate among all AV.

I am waiting for the final release of KAV6. It is no longer a resources hog. It's detection capability is stronger but uses less resources, cool? thumbup.gif

What are good FREE AV software?I have tried AVG for some time. I am not quite happy with the interface even though its quite easy to understand.
