tinkerbel,

Yup @String was right it was not for the faint heart. I did screw up initially took me a while to get back to where I was. OK this is what happen.

Yesterday download all the files required.

1. 2G restore file
2. Winpwm 2.0.0.4
3. Boot image for 3.9 and 4.6

The first step of ipsw builder was not a problem and pretty straight forward. Proceed as per instruction from Winpwn 2.0 guide. http://sleepers.net/news/2008/07/25/winpwn-20-guide/

Save the file up and now we need to put the iphone in the DFU mode. This is tricky and I tried for about 20 minutes and could not get it on the DFU mode. Damn... so I google for an easy way and found a DOS mode of putting the iphone to DFU and the nightmare begins. Onces I run that DFU utility it blank iphone screen and turn it white as stated in the webpage so I was not worried.

Proceed to do the shift restore from itune 7.7 in my Vista PC. After about 5 minutes ERROR 1604.....  shocking.gif

Power down the phone and power it up the iphone boots up in the recovery mode which shows itune logo and the USB connector. I just could not get it out of this mode by powering it off..... hold the power button for 20 seconds.... hold the power button and the home button together and still it would always boot up in the mode.

Then the WIFE came in and it is about 4pm and said come lets go to MAHA 2008.....  vmad.gif what to do..... left the iphone on the table and off we go to MAHA 2008. I think 80% of the time when I was in MAHA 2008 my mind was racing ... where did I screwup. We finally reach home around 8.30.

I thought it was Windows Vista that was the issue so I install itune in my multimedia PC and ran itune shift restore and the same results. Well Google that problem and downloaded ibrickr 0.91 and that brought my iphone back to my 1.1.4 state... Whew.....  rclxm9.gif Check the phone and it seems to be ok.

Well like daddy like to live on the edge and tried the DFU method 3 and it work. And I proceed with the itune Shift Restore and 15 to 20 minutes I am now on 2.0.1..  rclxm9.gif

hehe.... now I have to do the number patch.....

What a day.

jackdon.

I SINCERELY SALUTE YOU, JACKDON!

You are the epitome of someone who knew very little about the iPhone, and yet took the challenge, and learn up about the process, and the end result, manages independantly, to update your iPhone to 2.0.1. This is the attitude we want to see in the forum, the self-reliance, as well as you being able to contribute your say about your experiences, your dos and donts, the recommendeds and the avoidances.

This is the prime example of WHY we want newbies to learn and do things themselves. I may not be able to answer for Jackdon, but for me, when I first managed to update 1.0.2 (yes, I had mine that old!) and unlocked it using command-line processes via Terminal, the end result is damn satisfying. I get a nice working iPhone, and I get to contribute to the community with my experiences. In the end, I became not an observer, but I help contribute to the community.

Good show, Jackdon, and congratulations once again! rclxms.gif

@Stringfellow,

Thanks for the compliment and yup the feeling is WOW rclxm9.gif ....

I do have a quick question since I am still a noob that follows instruction to the dot. Now that I have a 2.0.1 working image file. Can I use that if my son screws it up by updating it mistakenly. Well to day is my last day with the phone as he is due back tomorrow from his MSSM competition in Johor. So it will be back to my boring Treo 650 Palm OS that I can't seems to live without it.

Seriously IMO I think Version 1.1.4 is much snappier.

And thanks to all that had given me valueable information and point this noob in the right direction.

You can go up to 2.0.2, there have been reports on successful attempts at pwning 2.0.2 by hskoon.

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/771084

Note that he used Quickpwn instead of Pwnage Tool or Winpwn, plus he said you only need to jailbreak it, it remained unlocked.

enemysaxon, we all know, even with whatever verdict the outcome of the "episode" is, that what is right and what is wrong. I may be touch on the newbies, but examples like Jackdon here is the result paying off.

For what it is worth, this further proves my suspicion, and cements my lack of faith on the people that handle this forum. Believe me, it may come to a point where they would come back to me and say "Tak suka? Keluar!", just like that ignorant MP in Parliament.

enemysaxon,

Yup he sure is a lucky fellow the iphone as a gift for him was like an accident.

A few months back a good friend said that his nephew was coming back from the US for a holiday and I said. Pick one iphone back for me. Well that did not happen because there were too many request but his other brother came back a week ago with one iphone for me. I guess many other people was not keen because of the release of the 3G so I pick it up so it should not cost me more that RM 1,000/= .

For the last few weeks my son's 2 year old phone was getting cranky and he had been complaining and keep hinting that he wanted a SE W890i and I check that new unit is about Rm1.4 K. So I might as well give him this iphone. So I actually save RM400/= giving him this phone even though I like it so much.

Well... wait till some of you become parent n you will know.

MAHA 2008 = Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture & Agrotourism Show 2008

Entrance is free check out http://www.mahaexpo.com/

I would love to give my son the Treo 650 but I think there will be mutiny at home shakehead.gif anyway there are quite a few application on the Treo that I use almost everyday plus the FACT that I can type 5 times faster on the Treo than on the Iphone biggrin.gif .

hehe..... daddy may have a secret plan as my phone is due for an upgrade hehe...... let see how the Treo 800 3G when will be launch else who knows I may have a friend in NZ or HK than can get me a 3G phone soon biggrin.gif biggrin.gif .

I just love the iphone interface and amaze how quick it is. I use xillisoft to convert Shrek the Third and it is cool. Yup BossPref looks great for preventing the Edge usage accidently and if he needs to go online he can turn it on for a few show off to his friends smile.gif.

Well thanks for all your support here, I have to admit with the support and the fact that I know that if I realy really screw up I can get help here really pushes me ahead with the upgrade.

jackdon in 5 hours will be back to his old Palm OS Treo 650

P.S

Any IM client that is compatible with Windows Messenger, I am sure he will be asking.

jackdon, you are one very very cool dad smile.gif Good work on getting the iPhone upgraded & unlocked.

I'm sure your son would truly appreciate the iPhone and take good care of it. My MBP was a surprise reward from my dad as well, after I managed to secure a scholarship to study overseas. No words could ever describe how much I appreciate it. It made me truly realize that money doesn't come easy, and I've since worked my own way to feed my Apple addiction.

You've worked hard for the money, and you have all the right to reward your children whichever way you see fit. I'm sure you know where the limits are, there's spoilt children and there's well brought-up children. I truly believe your family falls in the latter category, and well done for that smile.gif

I like the way you express yourself with emoticons.. Very cute, and a refreshing thing to see in here! Pretty sure it'll put a smile on everyone's faces. thumbup.gif Also, theres noobs and there's newbies. You're definitely not a noob, but an exemplary newbie. Hang around here more and you'll be a pro in no-time.

Keep it up, and keep on daddy rockin!

Now I got a problem, son came back and I had all my contacts in the phone so we did a reset to erase all content and settings. It went on for an hour and after that the apple logo appear and the clocklike circle is on for almost 30 minutes not moving. I do a press the power and the home button to turn it off and power on again it seems to be the same. Any idea or should I reload it again.

Stick it in your Mac/PC and see if iTunes sees it. That may jumpstart the iPhone.

I dare not advise anything further, it may be an intermittent kinda thing.
