Have you ever wondered what makes UNiM special compared to other local public and private universities and college (eg. UM, UKM, USM, UTAR, MMU, IMU, Taylors, INTI, HELP etc.). Why can they charge such high fees (relative to other educational institutions) and still reject 30-40% of applicants? I know it's a good university in UK and emphasizes on both research and teaching but what makes it 'dazzle', especially to employers? What qualities does it have to make up for the tuition fees difference between the universities that I've listed up there and it.
No offence though, I myself am a UNiM student and i was just wondering... This post has been edited by Thinkingfox: Oct 4 2008, 11:35 PM |

first of all, it is a UK based university, headed by chancellors from UK. So for people (like me) who wanna escape from bureaucracy red tapes of malaysia (Eg:quotas, racial discrimination, incompetent lecturers and facilities), international university is the way to go. People should be judged by their merits, not race or religion for admission of university. In USM, guys cant wear shorts, and girls can wear skirts. And I have all the reason to believe that if the students associations there were to organize any events, approval of events will be judged by highly conservative islamic point of view. About private colleges like taylors and INTI, they dont offer full engineering degrees, but does twinning program whereby your final few years will be done in UK with UK school fees. What makes nottingham "dazzle" in my opinion is that our syllabus, notes, and exams are all indifferent from those of nottingham UK, which standard is already leagues above all local universities. And our certs will be indifferent from those from nottingham UK too. I can still go on with the pros of nottingham compared to local universities.
So 40~50% premium to experience studying and working with international students and so many other benefits? It's worth it. cheers |

won't go into much details as above members did.
but one significant factor why it appeals to employers is this. Scenario 1: MNC A Monash graduate working at a somewhat superior level at a leading MNC commented: You can clearly see that local grads, e.g. those from UM are highly immature compared to their foreign grad peers, e.g. Monash etc. This can be clearly seen in how they react to situations, interpersonal skills, work efficiency etc. Although the above does not apply to everyone, it does give a general idea on why employers decide to hire from UNMC. Scenario 2: A large M'sian Berhad Co. A fresh grad of ACCA, which is the most recognized accounting qualification, applied for a job. There were 2 other local degree holders applying at the same time. The 3 of them got their jobs and worked together in the same department. What happened? The ACCA holder was dumped with much more workload than the other 2, because it was clear to the manager that the other 2 so called Degree Holders, are not competent enough to complete the tasks at hand. The ACCA holder even got promoted in a short period of time. This baffled, or angered the other 2 workers, which made them think: What is this, bias? What is she? Acca? That's not even considered a Degree! How can she be promoted and not me? The above clearly demonstrates how incompetent some local university degree holders can be. And that's not all, their mentality is wrong too. Scenario 3: Comment from an Interviewer Was hiring recently and conducted some interviews. There was this local university grad, and when the interviewer asked a question in English, the interviewee responded in Bahasa Malaysia. In the interviewer's mind, he/she must have been thinking:"Oh my god, Failed!" Not trying to be a judgemental person from the above statements, but it gives me a valid reason to choose UNMC instead of many other local institutions. |

pekies! how's ya team recruiting going? doing well? I do agree that our fees are much much higher than the local uni but you muz always remember we're a UK based university and our cert will be from UNI of NOTTINGHAM which most of the time impress your employers compare to a local U cert. This is already worth the price you are paying on top of the benefits pekies mentioned. Support ENTS team.. Participate ALL events in uni!

Sorry I'm not sure, cause I'm not in mpharm. But the ratio of male and female, well, I have to say, from what I see, male is really little. Maybe 1 guy out of every 4 girl perhaps? It's not too bad for guys already that ratio, but just an estimate. Maybe lesser. |
