Hi everyone,

Does anybody have a copy of the electronic engineering book called 'Digital fundamentals' by Floyd? Is anybody thinking of selling your book as a 2nd hand? Pls contact me. Oh ya, if you have I might also want to buy other 1st year electronic engineering books. Thanks.

Have you ever wondered what makes UNiM special compared to other local public and private universities and college (eg. UM, UKM, USM, UTAR, MMU, IMU, Taylors, INTI, HELP etc.). Why can they charge such high fees (relative to other educational institutions) and still reject 30-40% of applicants? I know it's a good university in UK and emphasizes on both research and teaching but what makes it 'dazzle', especially to employers? What qualities does it have to make up for the tuition fees difference between the universities that I've listed up there and it.

No offence though, I myself am a UNiM student and i was just wondering...

Hi,

has anyone tried out Ultimate Frisbee yet?
*
Yea, i've tried. It's fun and requires a lot of energy to run about. Whew..

Btw, does anyone know what the Tinggi Foundation is? What does it do? I tried to Google, Yahoo, Altavista it but no info so far except the one on Nottingham website.

then i hav a question for u, y do u choose UNiM instead of others? unless it is not yr choice to study in UNiM.. if it is yr choice to study here, then u wont be asking such question.
*
Oops..sorry about that. Don't get me wrong.. It is my choice to study here. I myself have a list of why Nottingham is better as compared to other unis.

1) You get to mix around with people from all walks of life (international students) & widen your perspective of life.
2) The quality of teaching and research is somewhat similar to that of other British universities
3) The admin is more liberal when it comes to freedom of thought and expression as compared to those from the local unis
4) It is an internationally recognised uni. Hence, the degrees are also internationally recognised
5) The students who are there must be good as there are a certain criteria for admission

But it's good to know what others think also and to share our views. Once we know why it's better, only then can we make full use of the facilities and advantages of studying here. Anyway, thank you for your comments, as I truly appreciate them.

Maybe cuz wan clear stock kua....
*
Yea..at night it's definitely cheaper coz i think they wanna clear their stock. During lunch they really cut throat. Rice + 1 piece of chicken + 1 vege = RM5. I mean, this is Semenyih and not KL or PJ. I heard that they're going to move downstairs once the operator moves out, which means that their going to monopolize the food business on campus (since the cafe is also operated by them). Somehow I don't think it's a good idea.

hey guys im considering this uni as one of the unis that i will sign up for next year (feb intake), can i know what's the best thing about university of nottingham? and what's the worst thing about it? lol no offense tho, just asking for opinion from students there.

one thing i love about this uni is it's an international university. Monash is one of them too. What's so special about this uni that will beat the rest of the unis in malaysia?

Staying on campus or off campus is better? how's the internet connection in both on and off campus accommodation? hahaha, i'm one of the people who can't live without internet  laugh.gif

thanks guys
*
These are things that i like about the uni:
1) As you said, this is an international university with a very international group of students (from 50+ countries), which means that you will be able to meet people of all walks of life and learn their cultures.
2) This university is not only good in it's research but also it's teaching. It has been highly rated by their respective boards in the UK. In fact, it has been called 'a prime alternative to Oxbridge' by The Times Good University Guide.
3) All online resources available to students in the UK would also be available to a student of the Malaysia campus (online journals, periodicals etc.). You can even request a hard copy of a journal from the UK campus to be sent to you at a nominal fee.
4) You would get to transfer up to 1 year to the UK campus for a student exchange while paying Malaysian fees
5) The degree certificates conferred to students in the Malaysia campus are indistinguishable from those conferred to the student of the UK campus
6) The rights of the students are protected by the student association (also known as Student Union in the UK)
7) Students here would be allowed membership/participation in the professional bodies (eg. E&E students will be allowed to join IET for free).
8) The clock tower. Hehe..just kidding. tongue.gif

The things I don't like that much about this uni:
1) It's in a rather remote area (could be seen as a good environment for studying). However, there are free shuttle buses from uni to Kajang KTM station and vice versa.
2) The food in the cafeteria
3) The tuition fees (but it's cheaper than Monash, for engineering at least. I dunno about the rest, pls check them). There are scholarships though (The Star education fund/High Achiever's Scholarship /Tinggi Foundation scholarship /UEC scholarship/Guthrie Scholarship)

Staying on/off campus depends on your budget/whether you would like to drive/room size preference etc. There's internet both on and off campus. If you stay at TTS4 (i think), you can apply for Streamyx 4Mbps.

For those who use the Uni - TTS5 bridge, notice that there are a lot of Indonesian workers who are fishing there (although it doesn't seem like there are any fish in that little pond). I wonder if they're fishing or observing the students to look for targets/victims. And the security guards can't be seen from the walking path (if you're walking uphill) which means that he can't see you also.

hi, im new here. i wan to ask tat nothingham got foundation?is it hard?If I take commerce degree at nothingham mas, can itransfer to uk in 3rd year? like 2+1? n how bout school life at there?
*
Hello, yes there r actually 3 types of foundation programmes: Foundation in Business and Management, Foundation in Computer Science and Foundation in Engineering. I'm not sure whether it's hard bcoz I'm from A level. The Malaysia campus offers the opportunity for undergrads to spend up to 2 semesters in UK (B. Eng/M. Eng), but for business courses I think you can go there for 1 semester.

Notice that the price for mixed rice upstairs (Cat Eyes) has decreased? Before the arrival of the new caterers, rice+veg+chicken = RM5. After the arrival, I got it for RM3.50. But I guess we should still give business to them(Cat Eyes) as they will be competition to the new caterers. And therefore they will help to control each others pricing, which is good for us students.

And btw, is it true that the new section of the SA (still under construction) will be made into a bar??

Yup..that used to be the norm last time. Now it's better already. My friend got a whole (polystyrene) packet of potato wedged for RM1.50 (altho it was a bit soft...). I guess the cheapest mixed rice can be found downstairs - the chinese mixed rice.

Is it
BEng (3yrs) -> MEng(Hons) 1 yr -> Phd 4 yrs ?

If you receive a first class honours or upper second class for BEng, I think they will allow you to take your PhD without having to go through your MEng.

Lolz, hello everyone.

I am interested to persue my foundation and FAM here.
Yet the fees are really expensive,
so i am still considering.

Do you all think the fees really got its worth in this campus?

Is the living cost high?
How much does it costs for a meal in campus?
Thanks biggrin.gif
*
In my opinion, the fees for bachelors degree is worth it (it's a British University Degree) but for foundation it's quite costly. For me, I did my A-level in TAR College, and since I was a recipient of their merit scholarship, it cost me less than RM3000 (including exam fees) for the whole course.

A meal on campus would could cost as low as RM3.50 - RM4.50 or as high as RM15 depending on what you take/order. There are 3 eateries on campus currently (I think they'll be adding a forth one soon) and if you have a car, you could drive to Broga/Semenyih for meals.

Ya, I found that foundation is costly too as I'm not from affluent family.
So, how do you get the merit scholarship in TARC?
Apply using SPM result or Alevel?
For business student, what subject can I choose in A-level?
Can I have my foundation in other college then proceed a degree in Nott? haha.
But I think the foundation programme in Nott is quite good. It's quite packed.
*
I applied using my SPM. It's given automatically:
8As - 75% scholarship for tuition fees
9As and above - 100% scholarship for tuition fees
(A - either A1 or A2)
You must maintain 60% for every tests in order to maintain the scholarship.

For subjects, check out this website:
http://www.tarc.edu.my/acad/spus/acad_spus.htm

I'm not sure whether foundation programmes for other universities are accepted at UNMC but I think it's best to call them (03-89248000) or email them: enquiries@nottingham.edu.my

A-level arts?
Haha, how is TARC? Is it nice?
So, do you have any other comment on UNMC? haha...
I wish to know more.. rclxms.gif
*
It's alright. You'll meet more mandarin/cantonese speaking friends than english speaking ones. The facilities are good (6-floor library, sports complexes, computer centre, two canteens etc. ). The best thing about TARC is it's convenient location - it's close to the restaurants, bank, cybercafes, saloons, LRT station (easy access to the city) etc. and there are plenty of accommodation options.

UNMC has good facilities and very good professors/lecturers and you'll get to meet students from many different countries. The thing I like most about UNMC is the amount of feedback they get from the students. They'll want to know your feedback on every subject and lecturer (each has a separate form), library, IT services, the food etc. One downside is that it's a bit far from town (there's a shuttle bus though) and nothing much goes on around Taman Tasik Semenyih (there are campus activities though) so you'll have to look for your own entertainment.

Yea, I always order from them. But they can take quite long to deliver your food and the delivery man is quite rude. He likes to honk repeatedly when he arrives. It is recommended that you order at 6pm during peak season (Sept - May). I think it's better now since it's semester break for students.

Yes, I would have to agree. Their Malay-style prawn fried rice is one of the best I've ever tasted. Their food is alright, just not as tasty as when they started but still acceptable.

Yes, it is only a year long. The third semester will be done during the summer break ie. June - September, so the course would probably be from September to September.

Are you talking about Nottingham's own foundation or foundation from other colleges/universities? It's best that you ask them but I think they will consider it especially if it's Nottingham's own foundation.

If you're talking about applying and making your own on-campus Streamyx Hotspot, I don't think you're allowed to do that as the university provides SNS to students. You could however, apply for an Streamyx Hotspot account and login at the hotspots which are on campus, but I don't think the accommodation has any hotspots.

Don't worry, everybody here needs entertainment so almost everybody I know here has a hard disk filled with dramas/movies/animes and they'll trade with you brows.gif . If you really need to download stuff, I would suggest that you download at home and "refill" every weekend when you go back with your portable hard disk.
