Planing to work in singapore. And never been to johor before. Need opinion.

1. Easy or not to find a single room to stay in johor? how much on average?
2. Rent a room in singapore, average how much?
3. Since i won't have own transport, what kind of transport available to travel to work? how is the bus fare? how many buses will i have to swap to reach singapore downtown?
4. What time best recommended to start travel early morning? Say...i work office hours. Will there be buses at night?
5. What is the average price per meal in both johor and singapore?

I want to consider all these to weight out the advantages and disadvantages. Please offer some insight.Thank you very much.

Any other good idea? Or comment?

I have a colleague who is working in singapore and staying in JB. So i can give u a rough guide.

1. Reasonably easy but not as easy as singapore, single room about RM400 depending on location and size of room plus the amenities
2. Also depends, im staying in a common room for $400 sgd, that about average price if your looking for single common room in the yishun area, closer to central town like ang mo kio and bishan is much more expensive
3. Bus and MRT are standard, but if from JB wanna travel to downtown, depends on area, best bet would be 2 use MRT if possible
4. if you start at 8pm, you need to start leaving at around 5-5.30 since the jam on the causeway is very bad now with the Mas Selamat thing. Around 1-2 hours to get through the causeway, not including travel time to from causeway to your office. Most buses will run until 11pm, others at 12pm. Only on weekends will you get "Night Rider" buses which run all night long.
5. In sing around 3 dollars, in JB if i not mistaken now food price increase so around rm5-6 oledi

For more information on bus and mrt routes including time schedules, you can visit smrt website.

2. Rent a room in singapore, average how much?

Huhuhh..very expensive!

3. Since i won't have own transport, what kind of transport available to travel to work? how is the bus fare? how many buses will i have to swap to reach singapore downtown?

If stay in JB, it's better to get a motorbike if u are guy. If u work in factory, normally they offer the bus kilang to fetch u everyday from JB to S'pore.

4. What time best recommended to start travel early morning? Say...i work office hours. Will there be buses at night?

7am. Yes.

5. What is the average price per meal in both johor and singapore?

U start travelling from JB at 7am, sure will not reach work if u start at 8am. Which place u goto eat food cost 5 sing dollars? The food courts at paragon or wisma atria?

The food stalls in most part of singapore cost around 2.50-5.00 depending on what u having. Average hokkien mee is 3 dollars, bak kut teh is around 4-5.

If you are lucky, you can leave your house at around 6pm but thats cutting it close. Even for me staying in yishun, i wake up at 6am to goto my office in bishan coz the jam is terrible.

1. u can easily find a single room in jb.. a place like larkin, bukit indah is a good choice...
2. donno
3. if u live near larkin, u can easily find a bus in larkin bus station, alternatively u can take a bus from bukit indah and the bus directly using 2nd link to singapore...
4. even children can wake up early, i think around 5am is okay. about night shift i'm not really sure.
5. average per meal in jb around rm5.00.

if u haz come to this conclusion to meeting your ends need, i suggest you wanna reconsider working in Singapore ady. Is it worth it anymore.

Staying in JB may save you a little but cause u your livelihood. You really wanna consider taking care yourself or the little money u save.

My advice is stay in Singapore, if you want to work in Singapore.

To me, it's definitely not worth spending 4-5 hours a day commuting to & fro, just to save a few hundred dollars. Like pubee said, if that small sum makes such a difference to your financial situation, then perhaps it's not worth it to work in Sg.

If your new job pays OT, you could use the few hours a day you save (if you stay in Sg) to work extra and get more money. Or you can spend that time learning a new skill or furthering your studies. Or just spend it destressing.

Nothing is more wasteful than time spent commuting.

Which part of Sg will the new job be? If it's on the edge of the island somewhere eg. Changi, Jurong, Tuas, Woodlands, Boon Lay, Punggol etc... then staying at these non-central areas is significantly cheaper. Even if your office is at Orchard or the CBD, you can save money by staying farther away. Just spend a little more time on the MRT, but it'll be nowhere as much as going through the causeway.

You can rent a room in a HDB flat from $100-900. Varies greatly depending on location, proximity to MRT, amenities, aircond, attached toilet and class of flat (executive hdb, larger flats, smaller flats, neighbours etc. foreign workers, locals or expats, blue or white collar etc).

And if you can find someone to share a room, your rental is halved.

ermm... its engineering job for fresh graduate; salary dunno yet.

i wanna consider these 3:-

1. work at hometown rm1800 (everything free of course; plus can drive car to work, give parents rm300)
2. work at singapore and stay at johor (4 hours transport each day, rent room, transport fee, also give parents rm300)
3. work at singapore and stay at singapore. (will save transport time, but take all 3 meals in singapore, also give parents rm300)

my parents still working so giving them is optional, although i would like to.

Well i'm working in Jb, the food price basically is same(don't convert here and there la). But i personally feel its cheaper in SG.

Example in Malaysia , you earn RM2k, food is around RM4~6 per meal. In Singapore you earn SGD2k, one meal around SGD3~5.

Other daily used products such as soap, toothpaste, etc....all also cheaper, if you don't convert la. Levis jeans cost less than SGD100. In malaysia u earn 2k and levis jeans nearly RM200.

However other 'services' and entertainment places will cost more. Nice and decent restaurants really cost hell alot more even without the conversion.

Hmm..other than that, a room in SG is really cost a lot, and transportation expenses will be quite high and compulsory. The last i heard was around SGD400 for one single room. Well this also depends on which area you are. And they are very strict to overnight visitors. hahaha...

Well in terms of saving money, that depends on your priorities.

Just for thoughts, if you will earn the same ammount in Msia and Sg (RM2k in Malaysia and SGD2k in SG), and you can save 10% of your earnings. At the end of the day, which will be better? smile.gif Some say if you work in SG, you are basically 2x richer than malaysian due to the conversion rate. smile.gif

However this really depends on your nature of work. If your work is does not require 'networking/socialing' activities, then you still can consider travelling JB-SG everyday.

Just oppinion, feel free to comment. smile.gif

seriously if it's office hour i think better stay in SG. If shift workers, maybe can consider. Few years back when i was staying in JB it only took me 45mins to reach my office when i'm on shift.

I move to SG to work since end of last year. work in jurong and also stay in jurong. so my 2 cents worth opinions;

- price for real estate is damn crazy high. be it room, hdb flat or private condo.
- u can get cheap room around SGD 400 - SGD 800 at hdb flat with you-dont-know-who. sharing all the things inside the house and most sublet is illegal. means if hdb ppl pay a visit for inspection make sure u r hiding. show ur face only if you know ur name is listed as subtenant. hint: if u r on work permit u surely do not want to do anything that can cause ur permit to be revoked.
- i shared before and i learned my lesson. I have a psychopath housemate. So i moved n rent 1+1 room hdb flat that cost me sgd1600/month. rent + bills = almost sgd2k/month. and we r talking hdb not a nice luxury condo!
-im working during office hour and use public transport. transportation per month cost me sgd 150-200 (i used combination of mrt, bus and sometimes taxi)
-i ate at my office canteen most of the time so rice+2 dishes+veg including drinks its around sgd4- sgd4.50. and eat at home for dinner.
-for me sg cost of living is very high. with my income i can live a comfortable life in malaysia, can afford whatever i want to eat or buy. but in sg, i live a life where i need to slash whatever thing that is less priority and always think how to save money. its tiring.
-so after asking other malaysian senior at my office, i research here n there, i planned to moved to jb after my rental contract end and commute everyday to jb.
-previously i work in kl, and bad traffic is normal. going back home from office at klcc to ampang kosas can cost u an hour or more. which by fact without traffic it only take 10-15 min. and traffc in sg is not bad. car is still moving even though its slow. and bear in mind...it doesnt took 4 hrs from sg to jb..im not sure why in this forum thy say it is 4-5 hrs. even if u, use bus during peak hours it took u 2 hrs. but this is rarely. maybe happen during holiday season or shortage of bus. mostly 1-1.5 hr.

however in the end of the day it all depends on u. what is ur real reason to work in sg. and decide which is the best. for me, it becoz of the experience, the money, and i want to exposed my self to varieties. so why care for the hardships if you get more pros then cons eventually...

*
I really like this.
I'm also working in Singapore only recently. Now still getting grace staying at staff house but need to move out soon. I would like to stay in either at Gelang Patah of Uda and commute daily by motorbike. I also always here ppl say it takes hours but never hearing from somebody who actually does it. So I want to try for myself first. Anybody know a motorbike rental service at JB?

I think the contention is that you spend 4 hours a day TO and FRO.

back and forth doesnt consume 4hrs/day. Leave before 6.30am and I'll reach jurong by 7.30-7.40am. who ever claimed it took 4-5hrs is totally exaggerated. 4-5hrs-It might happen once awhile but not daily.

Most people do not work in Woodlands or Jurong, along those bus routes and nor do they live next to the Causeway bus terminal in JB. If you work in the CBD, it already takes an hour to get there from Woodlands and Tuas.

I used to get off the overnight express bus from Ipoh at Woodlands checkpoint and make my way to Orchard to go to work. That takes an hour minimum without fail.

And that's assuming your office is near the MRT stn or bus stop.

i think the nearest location would be bukit indah.
there is cw3 bus to take u to jurong.

waiting time is 20min interval.
go jb custom then go sg custom. u need to drop down 2 times.
one trip probably takes 1.5hours (depends also on volume of ppl lining up )
non SG PR checkpoint is vyvyvy slow compare to SG PR checkpoint.

The average travelling time from bukit indah to jurong approx ~ 1.5hours

THAT ALONE will just land you in JURONG.
if u need to travel to your office destination, cost a little more time ?

--------------------------------------------
some ppl will save tat amount to money to stay in JB. (sacri time )
some ppl will jz rent room in SG. ( sacri money )

unless u ppl gt better pay in SGD then only go SG work.

i hv a fren working in palace of golden horses.
gt job in SG for only 1200SGD.
travel my motorbike cost SGD 4/day.

stay in SG share room SGD250/mth.

u ppl decide the conclusion.

This thread is really informative. Thanks everyone. I just moved in to a 2+1 hdb flat in ang mo kio. The rent is unbelievably high it makes me want to consider renting in JB and commute daily to work. my work place is by Raffles Place MRT station. i m not familiar with either jb or sg. I ve heard daily commute during peak hours is really bad, but since a lot of people are doing it, I thought maybe it is not as bad as it sounds??? I have to be at Raffles Place MRT station by 8:20AM (as it takes roughly 10 minutes to walk to my office from the train station). So by what time do i have to leave for work? Would really appreciate any tips/comments from anyone. Thanks a lot. cheers!

Let me share my experience. I just moved to Boon Lay, SG end of last year. Previously I worked in Sunway, PJ for 1+ years.

Necessary expenses (PJ)
Rental = RM450 (no aircon)
Internet = RM27.50
Food = RM2-10/day, RM300/month (chap fan, bread, etc)
Transport: RM0
Entertainment & etc = RM100-300
Salary = RM2200
Saving = <RM1000

*PS: No car/transport required since living nearby office

Necessary expenses (SG)
Rental = S$480 (aircon, high speed internet)
Internet = S$0
Food = S$8/daily, S$300/month (chap fan, etc)
Transport: S$2/daily, S$80/month
Entertainment & etc = S$0 (incld in transport, not sure where to go either lol)
Salary = >S$2200
Saving = >S$2000

*PS: Seriously, most of the food here overrated by locals and sucks.

not recommended to take public transport if you are working in CBD. I tried commuting from my friend house using public transport previously, From his house in Taman Sentosa (3KM from Causeway) to Kranji MRT, it took us nearly 2 hours (leave his house at 5:30, reach kranji around 7:30). and from Kranji to Raffles, it will take around 1 hour. so you need to spare 3 hours for it. Now i am living in Johor Jaya (16KM from causeway) and i am traveling on Bike, I normally leave house at 6:45am and i can reach office(AMK area) at 8am. Of course it is a little expensive if you compare to taking public transport but it really save a lot of time. Rental wise i just pay RM300 for a 3 rooms low cost flat here. My friend paying RM400 for a room in Taman Sentosa, Previously i stay in SG and paid $400 for a common room there.

I found the room via agent, so need to pay half month rental as agent fee. Location is quite convenient but I wish it's nearer to MRT station rather than bus stop.

Not high compared to others I know laugh.gif Soon you will have the same too.

Food is still bearable due to cheap price, so cant complaint much.

need some advice on income tax related employment in Singapore. Currently, I'm in negotiation/discussion with a potential employer in Singapore for a sales role for mal/sig. The possible arrangement would be my salary will be paid in Singapore but my work will be home base in Malaysia. I'll be required to travel across ASEAN min 50% of my working time. I need help on the income tax contribution. How would i be taxed? Will i be taxed in Singapore or Malaysia if the salary is paid in Singapore? If paid in Singapore,

Hi all,

I am currently working in Jurong for almost 2 years, commuting everyday by CW3 bus through 2nd link. i am staying at bukit indah. It tooks me around 1 hr to reach Jurong East MRT. so far so good.

But now i was offered another job in paya lebar area. the salary is higher but its around 35km from tuas to there and 25km from woodland.

Therefore, i am also considering riding a malaysia motorbike everyday from jb to singapore for work. Estimated cost are as follows:

Distance: 114km (57km from bukit indah to paya lebar)
bike petrol : $41 (RM5/day, estimated)
2nd link my toll : $18 (RM2.2/day, fixed)
2nd link sg toll : $90 ($4.50/day, fixed)
TOTAL: $149

Correct me if i am wrong.

Can anyone experience person share to us the cost and timing ? is it wise for doing this ? cos the singapore renting is very expensive.

Pelangi u can't get RM300, even 400 the room must be in quite bad condition. If you have own transport, i suggest you to stay further down like in Permas or Mount Austin area.

rental a room now at nearby sembawang mrt cost SGD700 (include aircon, PUB and internet).

Plan to move out and stay at JB. too crazy already. the rental will go out because gov now limit the PR own hdb to rent the whole house out. this will reduce the house and room availability in the market.
Crazy, really need to plan.

May plan to drive in to SG. (car pool?)

Singaporean or not, you are treated as Tax-resident or non-resident (work less than 183 days)

http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page04.aspx?id=1190

20% tax only apply to the portion of your income which is above S$320k, so is your friend earning more than $320k?

Guys, I am planning to stay at JB and work in Singapore. Working location is Woodland Industrial Park e3, which is the area is the best to stay since I am planning to take public transport, either bus or train. Any suggestion? How long does it takes if I am staying nearby CIQ? Saw in the previous thread, 4-5hours per day, seriously?

Why say so? Honestly I got offers from KL and Singapore, salary is about the same, one in RM but other one in SGD, thought earning SGD while spending RM for saving. Expenses also high in KL, hardly can save money for future prospect. Can you share your experience? Pleasure to hear from you.

Nowadays low pay for foreign worker because of high levy..if you stay at JB yes sure you save some money,but you loose time due to wake early home late stuck in kastam...like the forumer said if you use public transport from JB to SG sure you torture..

i work 0800~1730,i reach kastam around 0500 by bike and it only takes me 25mins to pass kastam..if i reach at 0600 then i'l need to takes 40mins~1hr to pass it...if you use public transport more worse and become sardin in MRT and Buses sometimes you need to wait few trips to aboard..

If you can get atleast SGD2000+ salary then you are welcome,if cant then save it..single room in JB around 300~350 W/O aircorn & 400~500 Wif aircon.Makan in JB around RM5 wif no drink..

Since Woodland nearby to custom, and if I choose to live nearby Jb custom, it still takes 4-5 hours in traffic? So riding bike to work might be a good choice.

This my personal point of view, i stay at jj. Come out at 615am by bike, reach sg custum at 635am. I ride very slow nia at 80km/h. When reach sg custom, for bike it depend on luck too...the officer sometime open the barrier for bike lane, if u happen to be there u will clear custom faster. If kana halau to most left side to sembawang, it will take 20-30 minutes to clear. I always go to left most side exit to sembawang bcoz that area before clearance, u nid to off engine n push bike slowly n good thing is no nid to hisap bike smoke. biggrin.gif

So public transport is not recommended? I have no motor license, if riding a bike has much difference in travelling time, might get one though. Anyone experienced taking public transport to work in Singapore while stay in JB? Why I am thinking to stay at JB, thinking I can have more freedom in JB, can get a car, travelling around. More convenient for myself to get back to KL too.

if take bus, mayb need 2 hours travel time. but if you ride, u can cut that by half. you do your maths.
or you can wait until 2018 then only come SG work. By then, will have JB-SG MRT. should be a lot faster.

Wow this thread still alive. Let me share my experience.

I've been working in singapore for 8 years and stayed in Gelang Patah which is about 30 minutes drive from JB. My house is quite close to second link.

No doubt expenses in Johor is lower but you got to sacrifice your time to travel.

I drove a singapore registered car, depart from home at 630am and reaches office between 730am to 8am which is located at Jurong east, finish work between 5pm to 530pm and reaches home around 630pm -7pm if serious jam around 730pm-8pm.

Good to stay in jb and work in sg if you are able to leave office on time every single day... but jobs that required ot everyday will be quite tiring for such daily travel... sad case for me

Seems like it is quite similar to KL, i remember around 2013-2014, i stay in Cheras Batu 11 area and 6am driving to Jalan Tun Razak/KL city, 9.30am i only arrive office. It is even worse than JB to KL. Finished work around 6pm, 7.30-8pm arrive home...
