QUOTE(cjloong @ Oct 8 2014, 10:49 AM) Hey Bonsailelong, if I am not mistaken, you mentioned before that this is not suitable to plant in ground. What is the best way to thicken the trunk then? Was there a reason why it is not suitable to be planted in ground? Regards cj Boxwood has to be planted in pot with 50-50 fine and porous soil materials. Flat over size pot will be good to speed up growth and trunk thickening. |

QUOTE(Bonsailelong @ Oct 11 2014, 09:35 PM) When you are forties... You are resourceful.. You are still energetic.. You are experience... You are your boss's assets.. Now you are sixties... You are forgetful.... You are slow... You are fault ful ... You are your boss's burden ... SO FIRE YOUR SELF TO SAY YOU ARE RETIRING BEFORE YOU ARE FIRED !   Thanks to those who PM their concern. I got fired last week without a single sen compensation, just 30 days notices. Any way I'm Ok, alive and still can kick hard. This post has been edited by Bonsailelong: Oct 13 2014, 02:37 PM |

QUOTE(hosoonhee @ Oct 13 2014, 01:36 PM) Hi all, just bought my first bonsai a shui mei this morning...should i repot it immediately or wait till it become stable in the new environment? When can i start pruning all the leaves? Using hand to prune or scissor to cut away? Very new to this hobby, pls advise..thanks in advance. Welcome Hosoonhee.I'll say, defoliate all the leaves, let it botak and post a clear photo. I'll try to give some suggestions. |

QUOTE(hosoonhee @ Oct 13 2014, 03:47 PM) Thanks for the quick reply..i will do it now.. Btw, any difference using hand or scissor to remove the leaves? It depends on species. for coniferous species like juniper or casuarina, needle leaves should be hand plucked. for deciduous species cutting by scissor shouldn't be problem. |

QUOTE(hosoonhee @ Oct 14 2014, 03:03 PM) Just to check, is it easy to root for shui mei using air-layering? How long to remove to check the roots? I am actually thinking to split the plant into a few segment and into smaller pot. You can do that, but the trunk size must be sufficiently thick say half an in. It depends on how well you do the air layering, it usually takes 3 to 4 months to develop a healthy root ball. You can check back and refer to my post on Jan 1 2013 post no. 81 and March 19 2013 post no. 273. |

QUOTE(hosoonhee @ Oct 20 2014, 08:16 PM) Should i start coiling it with wire? Or should i wait till the leaves are out before coiling with wire? If coil now, will the wire block the leaves from sprouting out from the branches? Hi Bro, Yr shui mei looks great and has a good potential to become a formal upright doom style bonsai. Unfortunately I can't do much on a 2 D photo to show you exactly what to do. I suggest you cut the lower big branch, cut it approx one inch away from the main trunk, when new branch grows out, then bend it with wire horizontally somehow like the green color line. Then trim the branches more in an umbrella shape. use your own discretion or feeling to thin out the branches EVENLY along the main trunk, then post another photo of it if you want to. Remember, DON"T do any thing to roots at this stage. The image your shui mei is looking for is somehow like below. This post has been edited by Bonsailelong: Oct 21 2014, 12:24 PM |
