I think it took me less than 30 minutes on my DS410.
About 5 minutes to download the new firmware, load it to the DS410 then everything is automatic.
My DS410 setting was not affected.

Now feel the itch to get DS1511+.  drool.gif

Hi Guys,

I need some advice. Currently my NAS is getting >106MB/s sustained read/write speed . What is the practical way to get link aggregation for a better speed. I would need extra 2 NICs and a managed switch for setup. What would be the recommend equipment for setup?

Pointless to get LAG for 1 pc, cannot see the performance also you need a 802.3ad switch, good luck finding it here, i have hunt high and low at lowyat for it still no luck. It only benefits when there is more than 1 computer drawing from it. Hit up Synology forums, plenty of resource there.

Looks like you need a DX513 soon, when you expand your SHR1 better data scrub first else might encounter problems mounting the volume.

It will restart when power comes back on to your UPS. See below..

It works. I have them configured on all my NAS and UPS. I see why it does not work for you. The APC UPS must have a USB cable that support shutdown and the model you have RS600 (based on google search) doesnt have one.

Actually got difference between UPS drained and shutting down your NAS and when it has the Shutdown function. If you are running RAID and if your UPS battery has drained, it will set your NAS to safe mode so then it and cut off immediately, like hitting a reset button on your computer. If the NAS does not have this function, it will just power off your NAS without any warning which is not good especially for raid volumes. I have killed several volumes before and it is a b*tch to rebuild them.

I believe currently you are running on NTFS for all 4 hard drives, migrating to NAS requires the drives to be formatted to EXT3/4 (Unix) means you need to find a place to copy all your content. Going to be a painful process. Your best bet is to get a 4 bay USB box like Probox or Hotway as they are within your budget and does not require formatting the drives. Perhaps look up for the HP Microserver, heard it was going for RM 599 or RM 699 for a 4 bay version at LowYat.

HP Microserver N40L (RM599) & N54L (RM749).

The probox is just an external case NO OS which means its no different from buying a USB box for your hard drive but this supports 4 or even 8 too.

Yes HP Microserver is a normal PC

AC Ryan already have an USB Host Controller so will work with the Pro box (plug and play).

Anybody can suggest me NAS that is cheap and reliable so I can transfer file even if I am outside and use it to play file on my media player with using wireless? One more, If I have NAS on my house A and have a media player on my house B, can I play the movie using the media player from house A and NAS from house B? Sorry, just started to learn about NAS
*
To be honest what you want to achieve sounds easy but it is not. You would need a media player that supports FTP playback which most of them don't. The best way is to setup VPN so that your media player from House B sees the NAS as a local storage via SMB/AFP (file protocols). But honestly unless you have at least 30mb fiber both sides you are probably not able to stream smoothly all those 1080p movies you have. If you watch only small avi or mp4 its ok with the current entry level broadband

The other alternative is to setup a "transcoder" so that it will make the file smaller for better transfer over internet. I am an avid fan of PLEX. Look it up. Its a great media organizer.

Pro box? Can you show me link to the software/OS? Kinda interesting. brows.gif

Pro box is a just an external enclosure. No OS on it. It utilizes the USB Host controller from AC Ryan as per Gary's scenario.

Hi guys, just got into this whole NAs thing last week, and poisoned already! drool.gif
So Im planning to get a ready made one, not so pro like you guys ler, maybe the DS231+, or the Thecus N2520. Buffalo 421e quite nice too but seems to be a lil on the simple side, doesnt even have hard dsik spin down feature, so its either those two since QNAP firmware fells so-so only baesd on forums.

But one thing Im really not getting after going thru forums, lets say I get a NAS, and have 1080p MKVs on it, set SMB on it, then have my droid phone to use an explorer app like ES File explorer to access the NAS, will the 1080p file actually have issues playing? because currently when I play from my PC network share to my phone, its fine and also when played thru my laptop to my phone thru SMB.

Isnt the work being done on the phone and not the NAS? because Im not planning to use Plex, so the FreeScale processor is fine with me, and it seems transcoding is a "heavy" thing even for Atom.

So, basically, will 1080p MKV file streaming have issues with a 1k ready made NAS? thx in advance
*
You are right. The decoding is done by the phone provided is an android phone, no issues but iDevices cannot thus requires transcoding from say Plex server so that is right "format" to be played on it. Get Synology DS213 which fits your budget and its good enough for smb playback.

wow, these NAS idea just keeps getting better and better

just read this and Im getting pumped drool.gif

http://www.robvanhamersveld.nl/2012/12/17/...-media-backend/

though I wont really be using the xbmc part, normal SMB is more than enough. xbmc on android is just...sad. Really looking forward to the DS214+ biggrin.gif

hopefully its not 1.5k at launch lol, need budget for 2x3TB WD RED too!!

Yup its great with all those 3rd party apps. All the stuff is grabbing "AUTOMATICALLY" and labeled, poster and organize with another app such as prowl it even notifies you on your mobile when stuff gets in.

Use your PC to handle Plex it can access your NAS than is absolutely a MEDIA JUKEBOX.

Synology has Video station which is surprisingly good too. Check that out.

yup, using my PC and laptop now but not really liking the idea of such a big power guzzling thing for media streaming, which is where this NAS comes in smile.gif

but I would definitely be using the other functions like the cloud station and also remote accessing of the NAS. I would also like to set the download location for anything from my PC and the laptop to certain folders in the NAS, so I wont have to replace the paltry 1TB on my PC rclxms.gif

Yeah, saw the Video station app, looks good on android, and has very good rating too! IF it works really well, I can just get the DS213 now and be done with it, but I am a little worried if I ever feel like the NAS is underpowered for something I might try in the near future as I learn how to use more and more of the features.

So I think its good to wait for the x14 series and see how it is, because there is a very nice hardware upgrade across all ranges with this new series biggrin.gif

Usenet cost about RM300 a year, not too bad if it REALLY works as advertised(honestly the way its look, have you tried before? hmm.gif
*
To be honest I love my Synology best investment ever but I got the plus series, a bit costlier hence no lag at all. As for the DS 213, if you can afford a bit more I strongly recommend the 4 bay version, coz you would want to run SHR aka Raid 5 which you lose 1 disk but with data protection. Been on Usenet for years, prefer it to torrent as always get full speed.
