I am planning on going to Low Yat on Sunday to get a 4 bay NAS. I don't want to spend too much - not over RM1k as I already have another QNAP459 4-bay NAS as my main storage and also a QNAP-201 as a backup. This new NAS is just for storage of videos and photos so speed isn't really important as long as it has 100MBps network - Gigabit would be better of course.....

At the moment I am leaning towards the DLink DNS-345 at about RM850. But thought I would check if anyone knows of a better deal on this one or another 4 bay NAS that will be in stock in Low Yat on Sunday.

I have 3 x 3TB drives already and a 1TB drive - all taken out of a Windows 7 64 bit tower computer as it is too difficult to keep track of them in the tower. So I just need the bare enclosure......and assume that I won't just be able to plug in the drives - I guess I will have to format them differently before they can go in the NAS?

Ok, I was in a hurry as it was getting late so I got a Synology DS413j from CZone - RM1170 credit card price. Went home ready to get started on loading files onto it and put in 1st hard drive - 2TB. Says it needs to format it so I let it and watched a movie. Only had done a couple of percent at the end of the movie so I researched and found it should take 2 hours per TB to format! So left it overnight. Now 9 hours later I wake up and it is only 95.63% "Creating (Checking disc)". I hope that is the last step in the process and am glad I only put in 1 drive and not all 4 or this would take a week! :-)
