any custom built NAS server here? (OpenNas, FreeNAS). Any tips, advantages.

Or is it better to build a dedicated server running linux or freeBSD, compare to NAS only function.

does the download manager 2.2 allows download queue whereby u can upload few torrents/HTTP/FTP task and let it run simultaneously or one-by-one
Yes. as many as you want. All this can be setup. I set it to 20 torrent and let it Q run itself. If you have over 20 torrent, others will be Q up till it have empty slot.

QUOTE(driftmeister @ Nov 30 2009, 03:07 PM)
higher clock speed contributes to high file transfer speed according to various reviews
will be more beneficial if handle multiple tasks at a single time e.g. downloading/HD video streaming/FTPing etc

Let say current 500mhz cpu speed can transfer 100m/s. But can I transfer 200m/s if I using 1G cpu? But the bottle neck of the lan is 100m/s? Need less to say over the internet. rclxub.gif

Wow... What a coincidence... this thread comes back alive just before the PC fair.. and when I am considering buying a NAS.

I need help. Looking for a NAS server for the following purposes.
i) I'm interested in installing my home with IP/Network cameras (I know it is more expensive than the analog CCTV cameras, but I'm expecting a new kid and since both my wife and I are working, will have to leave baby at home with maid- Wife works 5mins away from home- Need to have the peace of mind doing so.) Looking for a PTZ IP camera with 2-way voice capabilities to complement the NAS.

ii) As a storage for BD movies (which I can back-up and play on my media player) since each BD movie is about 20-40GB in size I better get alot of space - hence considering NAS with 4-bays and loads of disk space. I don't intend to use it for back-up (running it in Raid 0/JBOD)

iii) As a torrent download machine. smile.gif to download nice HD TV programmes..

The planned setup would be to connect the NAS to a router. I know probably wrong forum, but can anyone also suggest a wireless router? I intend to connect the NAS and Media player to the router wired and wireless to my PC/laptop.

Can anyone please give me advise on which brand/model you think will best suit my purpose? I'm considering QNAP, Synology and Thecus, but am open to any other suggestion. Also am open to advise if you think the set-up above won't work well. Fingers crossed there will be a sale for NAS during the PC fair.
*
Synology and Qnap is the answer for your solution. Get the one that many people use and alot selling here. Otherwise you have difficult get help.

The NAS can't connect thru wifi. You can connect to wifi router with lan line. My setup is in this way. But no point if you connect wifi since the speed is slow. Somemore BD file. rclxub.gif

You don't need till 4bay if your budget limit. Get two bay with external HDD later.

I think before. But the power consumption is killing me. So scrap my project and get the synoloy NAS.

During my project, I plan to bulit HTPC. Powerfull one. flex.gif Can watch HD, bluray, game, surf and DL BT. All in 1 and put at the hall with LCD tv.

But after calculate the initial cost and running cost, it not worth. And the wear and tear for running 24/7 with such an expensive HTPC. So scrap it. sad.gif

Any advantage you can think? Have a reason for me to start back my project. he....

thanks for ur info

the bottleneck is usually the network environment, but processor speed and ram size does contributes too
synology 107/108/109e/j which are using a relatively low end processor clocked at 266mhz, for normal read/write is 20/10mbps
thecus n0204 using 367mhz processor can reach up to 30/15mbps
synology 109/109+ using 1.2ghz can reach up to 50/40mbps
all tested under same network environment using LAN transfer

DLnext is using HTTP downloads
most of the current generation NAS supports HTTP/FTP/BT/Emule downloads
so it is suitable for ur need

but dlink dns323's firmware is somewhat buggy
there are cases that the downloaded file gone crashed
so i would suggest getting thecus, synology or QNAP

Thanks. you're right. planned to connect the NAS to the router physically. I'll also have to connect my media player physically to the router (I think this would be the fastest connection). The wireless router is so that I can connect to the internet with my PC/Laptop which will be in a different room. NAS/Router/Media player will be in the living room next to the AV Receiver and TV. So a quieter NAS would also be an advantage.

Hmm... yeah, maybe two bay (hot swappable) will do it for me. But the problem is at the moment, I have external hard drives all over the place... A mess of wires at the back.. doh.gif

Any suggestion which model? and does anyone know if there will be promo for NAS during the PC Fair? icon_question.gif

Pls read back few page here. Denhock have post some usefull NAS connection and streaming with media player solution. Another solution, you can find it at http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1166235 . Which using synology streaming to this player. Search denhock.

I only recomend synology cause I m using it now. You will easlly pick one model from thier website.

Even my media player 2m from the NAS, but I didn't connect each other. I use pc to transfer the media file to the player. Cause most of the time, I need to check, rename, delete and tidy up the media file before store it properlly in the player.

ds110j is very tempting. But plus the hard disk=Rm800+, kinda costly to me.
That's why think of cheaper option.
How nice if still can find D-Link 313 or Buffalo LinkStation

vmad.gif How come D-Link is the cheaper price ??
Anyone can explain the difference for this from hardware and features spec ?

and synology got:
SYNOLOGY DS-209J
SYNOLOGY DS-209
SYNOLOGY DS-209 - II

Well......
Start to confuse me....

But if I calculate the price, seems now Synology has too far price than WD MyWorld II ( with 2 disk 2TB costly rough 1300 ).

It is always the spec. Compare the spec and what you want to use the NAS for. If just for storage, synology is over price for you and not worth to buy. Get the china NAS. More cheaper.

Just my opinion. If just storage, NAS is not worth it. The running cost and wear and tear of the HDD. I rather just get an ext HDD and carry around. tongue.gif

China NAS cheaper? Mind to give some examples?
On of the cheapest alternative I can find is using NAS adapter. http://www.addonics.com/products/nas/nasu2.asp
But I am not sure how well it performs.
