Same... first movie I went to cinema this year without knowing the 'rating' no thanks to the late embargo Came out totally satisfied and was a little shaken/surprised by the audience response.
I'm itching to give my take on all the negative response, but perhaps another time. I watched it on IMAX 3D - - if you want the 'loudest' and 'largest screen' experience, then it will be worth it in my opinion.
But note that the 3D is somewhat lacking (e.g. compared to 3D animated films) but does add a bit more depth.
Also... large a** subtitles covering the bottom 30% of the screen. Thank you multi language subtitle local cinemas.
yeah, the stupid large subtitle is a major turn off, especially for IMAX 3D, very distracting

I just saw this and i feel the biggest casting mistake ever made was casting that actor to play Kylo Ren his dunggu/blur/duffus/goofy face really not manacing to play a bad guy.
I remember watching the first few start wars every time Darth Vader appear will get the chills.
that moment when kylo ren takes off his mask in TFA was a turn off.. hahaha
TLJ took a lot more risks/liberty with the SW universe in the way TFA refused. And Rian Johnson is getting pummeled for it. Heck, I was ready to say TLJ was not as good as TFA, I was wrong.
Even Mark Hamill himself said he is being an old stick in the mud, and that these films are paving the way for the new generation.
Fans may not agree with the risks/unexpected turns, but 10-20 years from now, it will still hold since this is SW canon.

if they'd switched Oscar Isaac with Adam Driver role....
we knew Oscar can play both evil/good role convincingly
even Domhnall Gleeson would probably made a better Kylo Ren
any notable villain roles Oscar and Domhnall did before the 3rd Star Wars trilogy?
Oscar playing a villain in Sucker Punch and Apocalypse in X-Men
Domhnall...not sure. But he's convincing as an evil general in SW:TFA.
*Oh u already post the Hux speech vids.
anyone of em probably made a better Kylo than Adam Driver...but i think there's a reason they picked Adam as Kylo. His face, u just couldn't guess if he's truly evil or conflicted good. By the end of The Last Jedi we already knew his true side
Watched Star Wars: The Last Jedi last month, but forgot to post my review on this movie.
It is a good movie to me, but not great. This time, this movie takes a lot of risks, such as being an immediate sequel to the movie The Force Awakens. This movie is pretty dark, showing the Resistance at the losing side from the start until end of the movie, with tons of casualty.
The story is simple. Clever story flow when alternating between scenes, but the main plot may not be necessarily great. There are unnecessary scenes such as the Star Wars version of Las Vegas and a certain scene involving Leia Organa. The lightsaber battle between Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker is too damn short to me. There are still few good scenes in this movie, such as the main Resistance ship colliding with the Dreadnought ship in lightspeed and a certain Force power used by Luke.
I also have issues with many characters in this movie, such as the lack of character exposition or developments for Snoke, Rey, Finn, Leia Organa, Captain Phasma and Rose Tico. The only actual good characters that I like in this movie are Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker (despite some issues), Chewbacca, Admiral Hodo, Poe Dameron and Admiral Hux.
Kylo Ren's most defining moment is when he met up with Snoke and Rey, and that scene is a great callback to Revenge of the Sith-based video game's alternate ending. Luke Skywalker has more prominent role in this movie compared to The Force Awakens, but some of his character changes may not sit well for some viewers.
The CGI are really good too, and the costume designs are fantastic like other Star Wars movies. The music in this movie is decent, but not great. I do not find the soundtrack to be as great as the older soundtracks such as Revenge of the Sith, as that soundtrack has lots of defining character themes and stuff.
Overall, a good movie, yet can be a hit-or-miss movie to many viewers. I personally think this movie's setting and timeline should take place at least one or more years after The Force Awakens events to have better storyflow and better use of passage of time like the previous Star Wars movies.
Cautious recommendation to interested viewers. 7/10
Pros
- Interesting twist regarding Kylo Ren. - Luke Skywalker is back. - Lots of risky Star Wars formula changes that may or may not be good to viewers. - Great CGI. - Great costume designs.
Cons
- Setting of the movie takes place too soon after The Force Awakens. - Possibly hit-or-miss to the changes of the Star Wars formula. - Many unnecessary scenes. - Lack of character expositions such as Rey, Snoke, Knights of Ren, etc. - Not exactly memorable soundtrack.
