actually if the person is residing in any of the EU countries...then he/she is not elligible for the VAT refund at all.....

to claim VAT, i think you can only claim the thing at the last port of departure from the EU area. e.g. if the person bought the thing in UK and go to France for extended trip and leave from france to msia...then the VAT refund would have to be done in france.....

plus the hassle of having the thing sealed and have to show it is not tampered with at the VAT refund counter.

Trust me, it is worth every effort. My good friend just bought a Bang and Olufsen system (beosound 4 and Beolab 3) and he carried it on board. Just the system and speakers alone, he saved like Rm30,000 compared to the Malaysian price.

I can tell you one thing, virtually every gadget in the UK is far far cheaper than Malaysia. Best advice would be, buy a few items at one go. Then at least your tambang is well worth it. Now Airasia, can do a return for RM1500.

If you get your handphone, handycam, digital camera, sound system etc, sure worth the trip.

Of course plasma and LCD TV cannot lah, it is just too big. Despite being able to claim VAT prior to sending it through luggage, I still think it is too risky to carry big items. Somemore, you know lah, all the thefts in airports.

Best to carry on board. And I think a Bluray DVD player is small enough to carry on board.

Btw, can you believe a Sharp Bluray player can be £99?

Added on January 29, 2009, 10:13 pmAmazon is selling the BDP 350 for 169 pounds. what a shocker man! If you claim your VAT, it woul be £144 pounds.

my bd player is from UK....by the way...i dont think you can claim VAT back for these mail order stuff..at the store...the merchant will have to seal the product....dont think amazon does it...then again i might be wrong.

Added on January 29, 2009, 10:41 pmfunny you mentioned these....most of my audio stuffs are from msia....i moved them half way round the world because its cheaper in msia....then again...my stuffs are no bang&olufsen

under declaring the thing also pose a risk to oneself, isnt it? if the thing is damaged or missing, then the shipper's liability is only on the declared amount, right?

yup...very confuse now...
now we have Normal DVD player, HD DVD Player (HDMI) and Blu-ray player.

1.
Normal DVD player, Malaysia and US are not same region.
Blu-Ray player, Malaysia and US are same region
- if I buy Blu-ray player in US and play in M'sia....
- no problem at all since we are same region but if I play the normal DVD then depend on that movie are NTSC or PAL or Region Free.

2. how about HD DVD movie (HDMI)? is it have difference region problem which is same like normal DVD?

3. How about PS3? also hv region code problem?

smile.gif
*
1. DVD player...US is region 1, Msia is Region 3 BUT seems that most msian units (if not all) has been unlocked to enable it to play any DVD (Region 0 to 6)
Standalone BD player. US is BD region A, DVD region 1. This mean it will play Region A bluray and DVD region 1 (and region free movies)
Standalone BD player. Msia is BD region A, DVD region 3. This mean it will play Region A bluray and DVD region 3 (and region free movies)

2. your so called HD DVD player has the same rule like the normal DVD player

3. PS3 would have the same rule like in #1 described above.

Clear as mud?

should i mention that some standalone BD player can be hacked (software) to play any region DVD?

hey fellas, i was at the KL pc fair today and stopped by the panasonic booth. they are taking order for the BD60 at RM1999 comes with 1pc of blu-ray of your choice (select at speedy). the thing is the sales people there are very confident that the machine is region free....it sure wasnt convincing to me anyone here has a BD locked to region B? they were eager to try it to prove it. look for Ryan Kwan at the booth.
