Gig bag.
And a DAMN good one at that. Strap your laptop in a Courier Bag, not a bagpack, and you can carry both your Guitar AND your Laptop bag. I know. That's how I brought back my guitar from the states 2 years ago. I had a gig bag and a courier bag (no laptop, but lots of stuff inside still). When you go collect your boarding pass, MAKE SURE YOU GET AN AISLE SEAT. Sure, you'll get your elbow whacked to hell by the trolly cart, but then you get to load and unload your guitar in the overhead bins. Also, make sure that you get to your boarding gate FIRST. Do whatever it takes to get on board first or at least faster then everyone else. If you're going via Air Asia, they have an express boarding fee. PAY THAT. If you're on a normal flight, sweet talk the gate checker and see if you can get on first to store your guitar. When you get on board, try to find an overhead bin that can fit your guitar. Most trans-ocean planes SHOULD have big enough bins. But if you lucked out and have smaller bins, ask the stewardess VERY VERY NICELY to store your precious in the "coat closet", or if it's a particularly empty flight, ask if you can store it in the First class or Business Class bins (which are usually bigger). Remember that aisle seat you got? Stand by, be a good boy, and help people with their luggage on top, as to make sure nothing is crushing ON TOP of your guitar. Other then that, can't think of anything much. But if you can afford it (and the baggage fees), get a pro quality flight case. It might cost more then your guitar, but at least it's safe. Added on July 5, 2008, 12:24 amAnother thing, best if you CALL the airline and ASK about their policies on guitars on their flights. That way, you can check if it fits. Oh, and de-tune the guitar. You're not going to play it on board, so don't tighten the strings at all.
