Bump this thread.
My son started playing skateboard just 2 months ago. He showed some interest but I was hesistant because I see skateboarding as a dangerous hobby that could lead to grave injuries.

I still bought him a cheap skateboard online just to see if its just a short interest. Now his elder brother is also joining him and the kids in my housing area have started playing too.

The cheap skateboard works fine, but I would like to get him a proper one this time. However, I have zero clue on how or where to pick a decent deck. I hate to throw money so I'd appreciate if anyone could share some tips on buying a beginner's deck that won't hurt the wallet.

Get one from Decathlon. They're decent enough for kids level & don't burn a hole in your pocket.

I've been to Decathlon sometime ago. The strut and the wheels looked good, but the deck is difficult to know for sure.
Perhaps its worth for me to check it out again when I have the time. I'm based in johor, and we don't have any decathlon branch yet over here.

Yea, IINM Decathlon should have some samples for you to test out; just make sure your kids are in the right shoes. I'm from Penang so our fate are alike with the nearest Decathlon hours away.

I bought my son SkateXS all the way from the US since he showed so much interest. Had to ask a friend who's flying over to hand carry it back here. Now it's just collecting dust in the cabinet. doh.gif

Ah well... A good father tries to be supportive of their kid's interest. How they retain that interest is up to them. smile.gif

Good thing about skateboard is that they won't expire. Perhaps one day you're son will pick up the interest to skate again.

Hi guys, i want to learn skateboarding, but it seems like no one's into skateboarding these days?

Can i bring up an old thread?

I think its the right thread. Why not?

I got myself a cruiser board. But it seems like this is learning on hard mode. Tried a longboard for few mins and kinda loved it laugh.gif

My suggestion is to learn the baby steps first.. no harm learning fundamentals properly - how to push, how to T-stand, and how to brake

I'm thinking to change into a longboard or surfskate tho. I find the cruiser board a bit tiny to do longboard dancing biggrin.gif

Just came across this forum in LYN.. I started skateboarding because of covid (encouraged my kids to take up waveboarding and then graduated to a skateboard).

I bought a cheap complete skateboard, and I wanted to share with anyone who is thinking of doing it, you can, but I would recommend highly you invest in changing the bearings immediately. I used the standard no brand ones (I bought a puente complete skateboard from shopee) and then recently switched to spitfire classics. the smoothness is like night and day.

btw, I also wanted to ask, are there skateparks that would cater to beginners like me (and my kids) in the PJ area? Wanna at least be able to carve on flat ground and learn to pump a bit.

I've tried the pump track in BU7 (which is totally not beginner friendly whatsoever and to be fair is a bike pump track) and also walked past the skate area in 1U. The one in 1U looks kinda decent, but wanted to see if anyone else had suggestions. I know about Shah Alam and Putrajaya skateparks but those are kinda far hehe....

Hi all, was trying to get skateboard as the last mile transportation from LRT to office. Was wondering, do I just get the complete skateboard from Decalthon or from the skateboard shop?

If from skateboard shop, which shop do you all recommend? in klang valley. below RM300.....

Zone5 is like one of the OG skateshops and their prices seem pretty decent. I previously bought my bearings and also a complete deck from there before. Can sometimes get below RM300 but if you can stretch to RM350, definitely can get some good clearance stocks. Here's an example: https://shopee.com.my/-CLEARANCE-Darkstar-M...ce-f4b6f9897d57

Having said that though, if you want to use skateboard as last mile transportation, how confident are you to skateboard? Learning how to skateboard vs being confident / good enough to take the skateboard on roads quite different. also, what kind of terrain is that last mile? if it's bumpy and all, perhaps considering a cruiser board with soft wheels may be a better bet.

Hopefully this helps.
