Anyone over here are westies owner? I myself have two westies, a male and a female and it is really great having them around. My male is already 7yrs old and my female is juz a pup when i took tis pic. Now her ears already stand and its exactly the same as my male Casper.

Please share your experience here of having your westies.

Actually my male westie has a cream color is due to the weather over here n another thing he is on medication because he has skin problems that comes in his genetic. So the medication will also affect the color of his fur.

We imported him back from Czech, and it really took time for him to adopt the weather over here. Previously he was really pure white until back here the color slowly changed. Now his skin is improving and he is indeed a pure breed westie.

maybe can try botak ur male, then let the hair regrow. During this time feed him fish oil, think will help.

You're gonna laugh when Pennywise responds to this thread. His male Westie is also named Casper.

My Westies are ok. Sparky likes to lick his paws which explains the discoloration there. Also likes to lick his hind legs so sometimes no hair there too. Buffy just finished her 1st heat and keeping the both of them apart was very tiring.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! OMGGGGG!!!... yet another Westie lover!! Yahooo!!! Finally got Westie thread!! And Casper too!!

My male Westie also name Casper. He is 1 year and 7 months old. I got him on 1st Jan 2007. My female Westie is Moonie because she was born during Mooncake Festival so we named her after the Moon. I got her around October last year. She is now 9 months old!

Here are some picture from Chinese New Year 2008. It was around this time I shaved Casper bald, looking like a Pitbull Terrier and he hates me for it. Now, 3 months had passed and his fur is starting to grow back. He looks so hansem now.

Added on May 22, 2008, 2:42 pmYea, he can try that but then do not cut to the skin as growing out new fur may change the fur color due to pigmentation. That's what I was told last time and best part is, the dog is going to hate him for it.

Wash with Malaseb if his paw is discolored / red. This happened with my gf's Jap Spitz from Aus. It works! Be caution that Malaseb is poisonous.

Omg, Moonie first heat ended some time ago. Casper went totally nuts over it. So nuts that he's grumpy, growling, moaning like Mr. Bean. He even injured himself when he tries to get close to Moonie once because he fell from a chair and broke his nails... splash, blood everywhere.

you mentioned Malaseb before and i got it from Dr Lian about a month ago. so trying it out. how often should i use it ah? with every weekly shower?

Sparky's mood and behavior totally changed during the 2-3 weeks of Buffy's heat. He whined, barks to want to get to her, pee and mark all around Buffy's cage and sleeping area (telling others to keep away from his byatch... )

For almost 2 weeks, they cannot play with each other as he kept wanting to hump her. Am just glad it is over for now.

Pennywise, you plan to mate them in 2nd or 3rd heat?

I would say use Malaseb everytime you bath him. Try to soak his paw in it for 5 minutes or so before rinsing it off. Then wash with shampoo as per normal.

I never imagined how powerful the side effects are on Casper. I thought the stories I read was exaggerated until I experience it first hand. Casper literally went crazy and all the rotaning he get wont stop him. He stop at nothing. Even when he fell off the metal chair with his nails stuck and broken. Blood gushing out, he'd still trying his best to get to her.

Casper dont know how to hump Moonie though, he humps the pillow and it must be mental stress for him. I had to keep them apart - Moonie sleep in the living hall and Casper sleep in the kitchen. Moonie also know how to protect herself each time Casper goes behind her. She's smart or probably not ready. I was told that once the female is ready, she will let the male mount her.

Here is what I posted some time back. This is how Casper behaved when Moonie was on her first heat.


"OMG!!

These few days, Moonie heat cycle is coming to an end. So she stopped bleeding and we stopped making her wear Momy Poko. However, Casper starts to behave strangely.

Casper WHINES A LOT! He whines, he grunts, he sort-of like mumble and soft bark, whining and crying. Casper is also trembling VERY HARD. This morning, I come downstairs and see him tremble until the cage also shaking. Casper also bark a lot more than usualy, practically at EVERYTHING including my gf when she comes over, etc. Casper can bark louder and louder and whenever my sister ask him to stops, he go louder somemore until like sore-throat sound come out.

We had no choice that we had to buy him a muzzle because morning he barks, night he barks. All day around, he trembles - whether it's in the cage or out in our arms.

Finally, I saw what's going on. Casper tried to MOUNT Moonie for sexual intercourse and Moonie ALWAYS growl and snap at him, Moonie will want to bite Casper whenever she felt threatened.

Today, we went for an evening walk. While outside, his mind wandered off so it was fine. When we came home, I showered both of them outside the house. When I am done with them, I brought them in and let each of them sit on a human-size metal chair, so I can dry them with the hair-dryer. When I went to lock the door, Casper is up to his mischiefs again, he tried to climb over to Moonie's chair to hump her. There, he fell and broke one of his hind-leg nail cause it got stuck in the holes of the chair (This never happened before in the 15 months I've had him). There was a LOT of blood... ALL OVER and I panicked, wipe the blood, look at him, saw his nail broke half. I had to put disinfectant on it, dress the wound, etc.

The moment I am done with them, I put them down and there he goes AGAIN! Mount on Moonie but Moonie attacked him and push him away. Then he goes one corner, whining and grunting (like complaining), then he come again and again and again. When I separate them into their cages. Moonie lie down on her cage (side by side with Casper) and Casper was like trying hard to reach out to her. Moonie growled in annoyance and went to the other end of the cage.

Are dogs' sexual urges so strong? So strong until the behaviour go nuts? Barking non-stop? Whining? Growling? Trembling? IS THIS NORMAL?"

Buffy actually didn't mind the attention from Sparky. But she was very lethargic and honestly, we read that in the 2nd week of being in heat, she will let any dog mount her. And Sparky just tried to figure out how to open her cage from all sides. The urge is very strong and no amount of beating him is gonna stop him. Even when he was laying down on the floor, you can see his backside doing the humping motion on the floor.

Casper knows how to hump the pillow better. Yes, I will be having puppies but dont know which heat cycle. I am thinking that Moonie is still too childish to be a mother and her body is not exactly physically ready.

I am thinking after she's more than 2 years old, that would be a more suitable time. She will be older, we would have moved to our new house, etc.

Nope..i keep them in the house n bring them out 2 my garden n play wif them alwaz. Both of them like playing, but my male now abit lazy adi due to his skin problem.

Anyway, i made him bald few times even now...I just dun wish to bald his head coz that proves he is a westie... . I really enjoy having them and I alwaz try grooming them to make them look perfect. Now finally i am able to understand them better and even able to groom them till they look perfect....hehe.

Wat a coincidence pennywise that both of our dogs hav the same name...haha. Dunno whether they have the same attitude or not?

Its really nice to know that their so many Westies owner here. Really glad to meet u all.

Yea...their ears will stand naturally but it juz depends on time. Some of them stands very fast but some takes longer time.

Added on May 22, 2008, 9:58 pmThey are not just active...they are hyper active. They always prepared and ready to play with you...its just like 'bring it on' to them. Its really nice owning westie but it also takes alot of effort to groom them and make sure they have a good diet as well coz they are easily prone to skin illness. Mayb its cause of the weather over here in Malaysia. Anyway they are nice dogs to have around but sometimes they do bark when they feel something strange or see something.

Westies are really great companions but it needs alot of responsible and commitment to take care of them. Grooming them its also a challenge because its takes alot of time to make them look great especially the head part. Ask those owners, they will knw.

Just make sure that this small lions will remain happy always by giving them love cause they loves you, thats all they need. Cheers

Since I shaved Casper bald, I havent brought him to grooming. In fact, I do want his fur to grow back, long... much longer than before. As for Moonie, I am considering of bringing her to basic grooming cause her coat is really extremely nice. I like her lion look but she's a scaredy cat.

Haha...scaredy cat, mayb she just wanna play safe. My female dog also the same but sometimes she acts hero. However, when my casper barks outside, she will automatically hide inside the house when she was young. Now she is abit better where she will join casper to bark as well.

Anyway, both of them hate cats.

both of my dogs behave differently whenever we want to comb them and brush their teeth. Buffy loves being pampered so when she sees us holding the comb, brush and toothbrush, she comes up beside you and walks with you, gets ready to be groomed.

sparky, on the other hand, runs away and hides under the table.

For me, Casper is more noisy. Every morning, he'd bark at passerby if he look out the door. Moonie is more quiet.

If it's drawing blood for blood test or etc, Moonie does not have much reaction. The vet always say she has very good temperament. Casper on the other hand, will yelp because of pain.

Moonie hind legs are a bit longer than the front, so this make her look taller or her butt is high up. But when placed next to Casper, she looks much smaller. She will walk with kangkang leg and backside shake left and right. But when she's scared, she will scoot like a frog that cannot hop.

Oh ya, while walking around the neighbourhood, Moonie is the one who goes fighting other dogs while Casper is the chicken.

Yesterday, I was playing with them indoor. I took the treats bag to feed them. While I was sitting down on the floor, my hand pressed on the bag too hard that the seal separated, it got opened with a POP! in front of Moonie face. She got upset and scared, walk home. I told her to come back and said sorry... Lift her front paws up and saw her leak / pee. Hahahaha... Pop on her face, so scared until pee. Funny. Haha

Mine terbalik lar...casper will hav a better behavior than tweety...even during blood test, casper no rasa wan, but he is very obedient and listen to what i says. Mayb the vet doctor over there very leng lui thats y he gave her take the blood sample willingly... . My tweety when jab normal vaccine injection also shouting adi, needle aso haven poke in...i just hold her and she is like know wat is happening.

Westies really pee easily once get too excited or got shock, previously my casper had tis prob also but now he no longer face this problem anymore...mayb once they grow, the muscle over there gets stronger..haha. But my tweety will pee lar once get to excited...i guess thats normal for them. Mayb later it will be ok once they are more matured.

Anyway, my casper is very Ego wan lar when walking around the neighbourhood as though he is like the king of the road oni...he will walk gracefully like 'tai ko'. Mayb he is acting as though he thinks he's a LION..haha.

My Buffy is noisier than Sparky. She will bark even before we can see the stranger walking past the front of our house. Sparky will bark once he sees the stranger.

In terms of vaccination, Sparky takes it like a man and makes no noise...except when he kena microchip. That one he whined and screamed because the needle was HUGE! Buffy whines at any medical check up.

Both love to go for walks but Buffy is the energetic one. She will run to keep pace with you if you run or jog. Sparky is like old man, just walk at his relaxed speed.

Mine they do watch tv...esspecially those programs that hav dogs in it.

yes...they will be glued to the screen if there is a dog on TV....

Haha...westies do hav the same interest.

Hey...how old is ur westie in this picture now? It looks exactly the same as my tweety(female)...mine is 1 year+ oni, but very naughty..haha. Actualy can consider as hyper active, she can keep on moving non-stop. Wait till i groom her then i'll upload the pictures for U all to see k.

8 months old. She is hyper too and very active. Loves attention though. Can't wait to see more pics of tweety.

OMG....i guess urs n mine r in the mother. Mine aso need attention alot. When i touch casper(male), she wont let...she will jump on me n not letting me touch casper but i will normally cal her to stay at her place so that she wont make it a habit...now she still do that but alot better when she was a small pup. I normally take turns in touching them, once finish touching her then i'll touch casper but i'll demand her to stay when i touch casper...eventually both of them will understand when i care of 1, i'll care for the other. Tis is to ensure that im not bias to any of them.

Anyway, i give fair attention to both. Before I slep, i'll alwaz sweep their heads..so they'll know im goin to slep, and they will automatic go n slep as well. But i alwaz like to disturb them when they slep coz they look so good n when u touch them while their sleping, they wont care how you sayang them, as long as they feel comfortable.

Actually the westies of u all, r they alert? I mean like there is noise outside, they will straight away fly out to see wats happening? Mine both aso very 'ke po' 1. What aso wanna knw....enter toilet aso wanna follow.

Same same. Pat Sparky, she will come over and push him away and get in between your hand and Sparky's head. Need both hands to sayang one dog on each.

And they are both kaypo dogs...that's what we call them sometimes....everything also want to kacau and come see.

Moonie also behave the same way, she will come seeking for attention. Usually, she will walk over and lie down in front of me, asking for tummy rub. Other times, she will just jump along with Casper to reach to me. If I sayang Casper, she will come lick my hand asking for her turn.

Kaypoh? EXTREMELY. They both run to the phone when it rings as if they know how to pick it up and say Hello!

Here is their photos taken today after I showered them outside. Brought them out for evening walk, 30 min and then came home and showered them.

i think very hard to snap pics on casper and moonie, too active rite? haha...........

i guess all the pet lover wish to have a big house with big compound n rare many dogs!

But they will alwaz follow you wherever u go rite, its aso good lar sometime coz their accompanying u.

Anyway, hav a big compound its good lar, but taking them out for a walk aso makes them feel happy. But better make them exercise more in order to keep them healthy...tats wat the doc told me. So recently i alwaz bring them out for walk alot. Last time its like only once a week...u knw lar, v aso very lazy 1...haha

Yea but realistically speaking, think about all the cost. You have to think twice again then. Unless of course, you're Paris Hilton then, you wont be into pets but more into men. Hahahaha..

Casper follows me everywhere but he often like to run off to my sugar glider cage. Moonie follow my sister more than follow me cause after I bought her, I didnt get much time to spend with her. My sister also so lazy never train her. Therefore, Casper knows more trick than Moonie. Moonie is just plane lazy.

It been sometime that v did not update our progress on our westies...anyway im in the UK now and i really miss my both little lions very much. Wat to do, got to continue my studies.

So how's the westies of you all, are they doin fine?

I hardly get to see westies over here in UK, most of it are all large dogs but their dogs are really obedient and some dun even need a leech while walking in the city. Anyway, i still prefer to see both of my westies coz they energetic enuf to entertain me...hehe.

Not so much in the UK but it's like everywhere in Scotland. Well, they are doing fine. I am bringing my pair to basic grooming either this Sat or next Sat.

i have been away in Singapore on business since Jun 2 and am still there. so i haven't seen my dogs too....sigh....

Wah liao... one UK, one SG... I'm only one stuck at MY. Both big biz.

The westies origin are from Scotland, so i guess it will have alot over there.

But actually comparing on westies breed, I see through the net...UK westies are the nicest compared to other countries. I've contact with a westie farm over here in UK n their Westies really leng zhai n leng lui...all aso look so nice, but i've juz seen them through the net lar. I've contacted them and they are willing to let me visit their westies farm in UK but i also dunno where is it located at. Hopefully Im able to find them ler, then mayb i can get 1 back to Malaysia...hehe.

Actually I haven even seen a cat over here in UK (im in Sheffield)...feel so weird.

i'm back now and got to spend the weekend with my 2 dogs. so happy!

quick question about food though. i've been using Nutro (Lamb) for both of them as they seem to be allergic to chicken based dry food. they used to be eating Royal Canin until the vet suspected the chicken allergy.

i was at 2 pet shops this weekend and was asked to try Avoderm (since i am looking for lamb based food). anyone has experience with this brand?

Nope, never tried Avoderm, but I think if you ask crazymouse_yyh, she will know.

I've tried Avoderm for casper before but it seems not much different though, however u'll c abit of recovery but it wont completely recover coz u'll still c the symtoms still there. I tried it for almost 1yr. U can try coz it might show some difference to your westies maybe. If your dogs cant take chicken, then the next resort will b lamb n rice...if it still doesn't react good to it then U'll have to change to my dog food now. I've change to Eagle Pack Salmon now and its very good althought its abit too expensive. Anyway Avoderm its a good brand and its considered as a Hollistic food for dogs as well, so no worries about the quality.

Can i know what is the allergic problem of your westies now, izit those skin problem such dandruff type or those with black molds on its skin?

Sparky likes to lick his feet so they are discolored most of the time (although we try to use the Malaise more often on him nowadays, Pennywise). Buffy just has rashes on her skin around the body near her thigh and butt.

just for ur info, others kibbles for sensitive skin are :

BW catfish, acana salmon, eaglepack duck, regal venison, regal sensi bite(turkey), avoderm vegetarian (yucks.....)

among all, eaglepack is the most expensive, others price cheaper.
hope can help u lah.

If possible, u can try to find a shampoo tat name Micohex...or ingredients that content micohex...its is an essential shampoo for westies.

they got 1 Westie for sale... male... but already 2 years old.. so big!!! but not to mention cute
they sell for RM 1180 if not mistaken... quiet expensive I guess... westie puppy already cost around RM 1300++ this one.. 2 years still expensive...

I'm so pity him.. so big in size but the cage is small.. like for small breed dogs.. he just sit n lay down oni..

actually, Westie puppies can be from Rm1800 onwards to over 3k...

well yeah.... westie price is more expensive than other breeds.. but it worth i guess

when I saw the westie this afternoon... I really fell to him too and thinking to bring him back home...
but... as a student I can't afford that price.. some more I rented a room here so it's not suitable to rare dog...
when he saw me stand near the cage he looked up to me with a face as saying "Please bring me back home"
I'm so tempted to bring him home also.... and although he's big in the size but he still cute

True...westies can really go up till a very high price and it all depends on the breed quality either its under a champion line or a pure good breed such as good head n body shape.

But i really feel westies aren't judge by price thought, over here in UK where i am now....dogs have total freedom, they can walk around the street without leech n they are so obedient. Dogs over here can run around the park as much as they like and i really enjoy seeing them play in the park where they aren't tie up n they can run as much as they like. Even the park over here are so huge that dogs does not has boundaries at all when running around.

Anyway, think twice of owning a westies whether u have that high commitment to make them feel happy or giv them the freedom they need. There is no use getting a dog for a super high price but u cant giv him the passion they need rite. I am here in UK, i really able to understand what a dog really need. They dun need a big house n a special room with aircond or clothes and accessories to wear. All they need is ur company and spend some time to bring them out to social around. This is wat a man told me where he has 5 dogs n all of his dogs are so adorable, one of his dog a westie and its so clever n smart. He really can do all sort of tricks man.

Anyway...its also good that westies are selling at a high price in M'sia in order to ensure that the breed dun get too speculate where anyone can rare them n making it a cheap dog n spoiling the breed. Its really not ez to rare westies n even the owner of 5 dogs told me that. But i guess its really nice to have a westie lar if u really can spend alot of time with them n bring them out often and also making sure that they are healthy without those skin problems . Juz hope one day malaysia parks will giv dogs to play around without owner having a leech on them.

Added on June 26, 2008, 8:52 amI guess its better bring ur dog to the vet....she might need medication aid. U try to ask the vet whether they have this medicine called 'psychosporine'...im not sure whether my spelling its correct or not but its tat pronunciation. This is quite a good medicine for skin problems esspecially for westies but it will b alittle costly lar. U can try to bring her to the vet 1st n c how is she doin.

Previously Casper have the same problem also and it will eventually spread toward the neck and back of the body. So better make sure u quickly bring it 2 the vet before it becomes more serious as wat my Casper experience before. Try to ask the doctor whether they have the medicine that i've mention. It has a smaller side-effect compare to the other medicine. Antibiotic wont really help much as normally doctors will jab for the dogs antibiotic to stop it awhile.

Hope it will able to help u cure Buffy bcoz really pity her for going through all this miserable skin disease. Hopefully she will recover.

Im trying to upload some of my westies pictures but i cant really get to upload it. i guess mayb its due to the firewall over here in my place. Anyway, i'll try to upload it if i can find a place over here that does not has strict firewall.

Casper has a black color back? Did you dye him or is that skin problem? Is he wearing anything?

Havent taken many photos lately but will try to do so this weekend. Considering of bringing Moonie to grooming. Any place to recommend?

Thats actually his skin problem, but he has recovered alot now. The pics that i posted is showing that he is starting to recover where his fur are starting to grow back. The black color thing in his body is actually dry skin but it will eventually go away once his skin fully recovers. Most westies which has skin problems are like this when they are recovering. I took tis pic before i left UK so now im not really sure how he looks like. But my family told me that he had recovered alot, so it sounds relief to me.

Its quite nice to see Moonie, she looks very healthy to me. I really dun have any idea where to take westie for grooming becoz normally i do it myself. ..sory cant help. So U took this pics tat time, she haven bath izit?

Hahaha... she looks dirty eh? Yea, I took this pict yesterday after I let them out to run. I only shower them once a week now. Previously was 3 days once so they get dirtier a lot. Just wiating for my new home to finish renovation and then I will have a better place for them.

Do you keep your dogs indoor or outdoor?

i still haven't found a good place nearby my home that does Westie grooming well. so am still going to the SS2 pet shop.

in fact, Sparky will be going there tomorrow.

Westies are cute!
I've always wanted dogs though. But my parents wouldn't allow.

I'll normally keep them in the house but i let them out alot to run around the garden so that they could use up their energy since they are so energized all the time. I had a small hole at my gate between the in and out, so they can feel free to run in and out whenever they want to. Normally they will juz run out n 'keh po' if they hear something outside. When im free, i'll just play fetch with them at the garden.
