My first recommendation is the Legend of Black Heaven OST, you can find it quite easily on torrent. I watched the whole anime just to hear the last song on that album
Please recommend me ... music!

I noticed that the audiophiles forum has waaaaaay too much talk on gear, but almost nothing on music at all. So what kind of music would you guys want to recommend to other people? Regardless of genre, even.

QUOTE(-[T1M]- @ May 17 2008, 11:21 PM) Well, part of the reason I started this thread was because I wanted new music to put into my collection. Whats the point of having a $$$$ setup without music to listen to with?Adding one more recommendation: The Red Violin's official soundtrack, which features Joshua Bell on the violin. The sound of the album can be best described as... moody, and quirky at times (as quirky as classical can get anyway). And I like it a lot |

Just one album for jazz, that you would ever need in your entire lifetime.
Miles Davis - The Cellar Door Sessions 1970. But heck, no one here would really buy it |

I just heard a bunch of Fourplay and I absolutely can't stand the music. It falls into the most boring genre of Jazz ever - smooth jazz. eugh.
Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and John Coltrane has more fluid creativity than the whole band combined. However, I should refrain from genre bashing as it is very flammable. But please, pick up a proper Miles album and it'll blow your mind away if you're musically literate. Leave lounge/smooth jazz like Fourplay at the chillout bars, and the real Bebop jazz to the jazz enthusiasts. Try this: http://www.soulfulclassicjazz.com/ for some internet classic jazz radio. |

Define musically literate <___< I have Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and some Miles Davis; I get their creativity but I'm not sure if I actually enjoy their music. They can sound a bit abrasive unless I'm in the mood for that kind of music.

But anyway here is the other song I like from Brave Fencer: Musashi, because it uses castanets, a rare instruments indeed

Tachikoma: What I meant by musically literate would be having some musical background.
chyen: Don't get me started on post-rock. Mogwai is a great band, however I do feel that MONO bests Mogwai. If you've only heard of Mogwai, well, time to put your musical tastebuds into deeper post-rock creativity. MONO is a japanese post-rock quartet and they are absolutely amazing. Don't be swayed by the lighter renditions of "Explosions in the Sky", they do post-rock fairly well, but not near as eargasmic as MONO's genius work. Recommended first listens: The Flame Beyond the Cold Mountain L'Ameria Karelia (Opus 2) auronthas: Understandable that genre is plenty to do with taste. I will not go into genre bashing because it's not correct for me to do that. Moreover, like I said, it is a very flammable subject. You wouldn't like my recommendations one bit. Anyway, my favourite album from Miles would be the 2nd CD from his 1970 The Cellar Door Sessions CD Box Set, it's dated 17th December 1970, oddly coinciding with my birthdate (17 Dec). It's as serious as jazz can get. If you want something lighter you may want to start with Kind of Blue, which appeals to everyones palate. I have yet to find my favourite 'Trane album. I do like Monk better than 'Trane. Different instruments, I know.. -WS |

auronthas: you would hardly get to 'preview' anything from the start. The tracks are more than 10 minutes long and it only gets complex about 5 minutes in.
Anyway, if you wish to purchase, the Boxset is about 80+ USD. I found it miraculously on CD Universe. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6938847 |

Despite my high regards for the cellar door sessions, I seldom have time to sit down and listen to the whole thing. |

Vaiz: Downtempo you say? I'm a big Zero7 fan as well. Do you have a lot of downtempo to push my way besides the regular: Lamb, Portishead, Massive Attack, Mylo, Kascade, etc?
Also, I've been following the Ministry of Sound Chillout Sessions series because they are the only compilation I actually buy. Did you know that trip-hop (stuff of Massive Attack and the like) originated from Bristol UK? That's where I am now! I seem to find myself in all genre discussions here. |

Yea, i said downtempo. Id just started into downtempo and chillout for few months only im still a newbie though. You mean you getting bored of Portishead, Kaskade? They're simply amazing... However, why dont you try Late Night Alumni?
Theres a lot of MoS Chillout Sessions series, dont know which one to start first... LoL This post has been edited by Vaiz: May 23 2008, 12:20 AM |

My girlfriend recommends me Enya, and I say her song is just astonishing! I heard her song before, but never know who sang them. It makes me hallucinating, feels afloat. Wonderful lyrics, melodious music. Its just heavenly. Song that I loved is Only Time and Orinoco Flow

My copy is by Bernd Glemser and the Ireland National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jerzy Maksyumiuk.
Anyone knows where to get Naxos classical music series anymore? Used to get mine from Popular and Tower but it seems they have all but disappeared. |

My favourite rock music I would like to recommend to you fine people:
1) SoundGarden "Down on the Upside" - Their best album in my opinion. Grunge with mood. 2) Faith No More "Angel Dust" - Everybody has to try Patton once 3) Led Zeppelin "II" - the birth of rock/metal/rock-kapak/doom/death and everything heavy You guys should try SpyroGyra's "Morning Dance" too, very nice, very smooth, very relaxing... |

Anything from:
Bob Marley Massive Attack Pink Floyd If you do fancy some random chillout-ambient-light-techno tracks, try out some internet radio stations, preferably 'Groove Salad' from www.somafm.com . Sounds exceptionally trippy when you're high, you know what I mean? |

Yup, Radiohead is good with many special sound effect. My fav is OK Computer.
I'm more into rock & jazz: Jazz recommendations: 1.For classic jazz, Dave Brubeck quartet Time Out is a gem, with HDCD encoding. It ranked high in my CD player playlist. 2.I always fancied Chet Baker jazz singing & trumpeting, brings the ambient into the room. Feels like you are in the 50s/60s although i'm not born yet. Really touch my emotion. Too bad most of the recordings are not that good, most in mono. BTW I dun fancy modern jazz... 3.Siri's Svale Band - Blackbird, damn good jazz audiophile recording, even recommended in stereophile list of best recordings. Good vocal & instruments. I am looking at the other album, hard to find even online... 4. I enjoyed punk rock too, The Clash, Rancid, NOFX due to their melodious rhythm but most is not sonically recorded well. 5.Classical: Ein Straussfest- light enough for beginners. 6.Acoustic pop - Frente - marvin the album 7.Rebecca Pidgeon - Raven. Good recording, but music so so only lar. Typical audiophile CD. 8.Mainstream music Coldplay, Linkin park, Papa roach, 3 doors down, Collective soul, Norah jones. I found Bread-Essentials album sounds so good (70s) Carpenters - good singing/vocal I believe good music should be enjoyed, irregardless of the sound quality. |

Kind of Blue - Miles Davis - original recorded in 1959, one of the greatest jazz album not to be missed.
I have tried looking for this CD and finally found it in one of local CD shops in KL. Earlier digital remastering on LP and later on CD, sounded thin. However, this CD is a reissue, it was remixed on an all-tube three-track machine, the instruments sound rich and full, like real instrument, nice soundstage. Attached thumbnail(s) |

This is rather funny, but I got hooked up with Goldfrapp. It somehow feels the opposite of what Enya gives, while Enya makes you afloat high in the sky, Goldfrapp makes me feels high like in ecstasy
Recommended song from her is Black Cherry, Ooh La La (this one is disco type) and Happiness This post has been edited by Najmods: Jul 10 2008, 01:22 AM |

Review on 'Two Against Nature'? Here's the brief review of 'Two Against Nature' abstracted from Tower.com and few magazines. Actually this album was released in year 2000, but hardly find locally. Rolling Stone (1/4/01, p.117) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Top 50 Albums of 2000". Rolling Stone (3/16/00, p.72) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...[The album] is Steely Dan defined....mixing world-class chops and jazzy postgraduates soul sound with some wonderful, vague storytelling....stunning musical clarity....showcasing what Steely Dan's core twosome can do..." Entertainment Weekly (3/10/00, pp.68-9) - "...The core elements are unchanged: white-hot chops, black humor, and a flair for the cryptic....their ensemble sound remains sharp and inimitable....proves that you [still] 'can' buy a thrill." Q (4/00, p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...a demanding slice of music, brilliantly out of sync....its appeal is slow-burning and ultimately satisfying: enough to keep the faithful happy for another 20 years." Uncut (3/00, p.90) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...TWO AGAINST NATURE is the very best thing Steely Dan have ever done..." Vibe (4/00, p.183) - "...musically [they] are in their prime....this is the only band that truly understands how James Brown's scratchy grooves and the Eagles' lite-rockin' appeal aren't mutually exclusive. These OGs flex their trademark dark wit like it never went out of style..." Mojo (Publisher) (3/00, p.102) - "...Sharp, sleek, sophisticated, more going on than a couple of spins can take in and seductive enough to keep drawing you back. 9 tracks, some a little cooler, funkier or jazzier than others...and all top-form. Quintessentially Steely Dan." NME (Magazine) (3/4/00, p.35) - 7 out of 10 - "...exquisite....still hermetically sealed in an exclusive world where the pursuit of the immaculate 'chop' is paramount, [they] are the only men in history to make the concept of the cerebral muso remotely tantalising..." I have her two (2nd and 3rd) albums namely - Odyssey and Treasure. The latter's sound recording way below my satisfactory though.Actually, Hayley Westenra born in New Zealand with Irish heritage, she is a soprano. I categorised her music genres under Classical, Classical Crossover, Contemporay Classical Vocals in my music collection search browser. Also, I would like to recommend Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue which i have searched for long time and The Ultimate Demonstration Disc Volume 2 by David Chesky - both are superb recording, especially the latter one, each track has different soundstage from naturalness, holographic imaging, depth, deep bass, just to name a few. what about chinese/cantonese (especially canto!) good jazz/easy listening cds?
apart from cai4 qin2 whom i like but can't listen to too often, are there jazzy/acoustic renditions of pop music which are recommended? as someone mentioned, chen2 jie2 li4's albums are good, she's got a classic voice which still suits certain pop songs. am currently looking for more! |

listened to audiophile voice V.. imo the songs are not as deep as the older albums already. arrangements are just a little suspect at times. singers' voices are still awesome though. still an album well worth getting!

Since nobody mention her name yet, I do recommend you guys check out Marit Larsen if you into pop/acoustic/pop folk music. For anyone who doesn't know, she is one half from M2M group who were famous from Pretty Boy. They were split on 2003, one headed on rock and Marit still on pop music, more to folk pop that is
What I particularly like about her music is, she made her own lyrics plus she plays some instruments on her own too. Even though that sounds normal, but give her a try. Her album sounds rather good too, not really have good dynamic range but not as noisy and flat as today's mainstream music. She sings with passion and the love of music, far cry from M2M days. Sounds rather organic I might say I like the song Solid Ground, here is some sample of the song

Are you sure? theyve been around for quite some time...(not as long as RATM tho). Brand New is kinda lame, very pop-punk-emo-lame. But that album mentioned above is the exception. =D

I am RATM fan too, here are some of the recomendation;
1992: Rage Against the Machine (must have, masterpiece) 1996: Evil Empire (must have) 1999: The Battle of Los Angeles (must have, masterpiece) 2000: Renegades (some songs are good) Overall is must have. Ohh... RATM is Metal+Rap. More creative than Linkin Park and not heavy than Metallica. Definitely not like Limp Biskut. If you like latin music especially guitar, i would like to recommend Brazilian guitarist Lara & Reyes - Exotico.
Exotico, Cascabeles (rattlers), Brazil are few tracks i like most, it's duo guitarist, left channel is Lara and the other one is Reyes. Well recorded, highly recommended. Attached thumbnail(s) Attached image(s) |

Sissel is nice. One of my favourite female vocalist. My favourite song is Summer from one japanese Drama.
But recently i fell in love with Joanna Wang (王若ç³) she's a Taiwan born chinese studied in the US. Her vocal is damn nice and soothing. She's like the Norah Jones of Taiwan. She's just released her first album January this year. 2 Disc version. 1st Disc consists of 12 english songs and 2nd Disc 5 Chinese songs. For those who likes Jazz, Blue, Folks and Country genre, don't miss her out. I'll give her a 4.5 star out of 5. I also listen to Pink Martini, Lisa Ono, Norah Jones, Secret Garden, Kevin Kern for Piano (very talented), Enya, Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Colbie Caillat, Diana Krall, Coldplay, Moby, ATV etc. This post has been edited by toytoy: Jul 29 2008, 05:09 PM |

One suggestion. Maybe next time if we recommend music, may also include their music link. Eg. myspace, imeem or etc.
Just click and listen. Instantly can know which one is suitable for you. |

QUOTE(etchan @ Jul 18 2008, 10:53 AM) what about chinese/cantonese (especially canto!) good jazz/easy listening cds? Well if you are game try this 2V1G from Malaysia. 2 voices and 1 guitar. IMHO very well done. apart from cai4 qin2 whom i like but can't listen to too often, are there jazzy/acoustic renditions of pop music which are recommended? as someone mentioned, chen2 jie2 li4's albums are good, she's got a classic voice which still suits certain pop songs. am currently looking for more! Here's the site http://2v1g.blogspot.com/. Can order from them cos the local record stores don't stock them, not known woh. |

They played some cantonese jazz songs that time. Here's the site http://2v1g.blogspot.com/. Can order from them cos the local record stores don't stock them, not known woh. |

Avoid buying local pressing CD, the sound quality is damn bad though it's cheap, it sounds cheap too.

Talking about Teresa Teng, UMG Hong Kong and Taiwan have re-issued her albums in phases. The HK ones are a mini replica of the LP and quite cheap if you buy a few at a time. The website where you can see these is at YesAsia.. I suppose you flers all know where it is.
I've already got many of them and the remastering is quite good!. Not the very best compared to one particular re-issue, but still excellent. Compilations are value for money though!...your call. This post has been edited by bsl555: Oct 3 2008, 02:55 PM |

I'd seen Chinese pressings of Norah Jones, at less than half the price. But I did not check out the quality.

If you're particular about buying western artists original label, then buy the legitimitate EU or US pressings.I very much doubt China cd pressings of western artists. I've seen too many fakes in the market, even China mainland artists. Lily Chen XRCD for RM25?... Telarc Round-up, Burmester CD for similar price...C'mon!..illogical isn't it? Of course there ARE originals among them imports. P.S. Referring to China products...like I say...What will they think of next?... This post has been edited by bsl555: Oct 3 2008, 04:00 PM |

The Chinese pressings are genuine copies. They are actually catered for the China market, but there are shops that parallel import them to give a price option.I very much doubt China cd pressings of western artists. QUOTE(piscesguy @ Oct 3 2008, 10:07 AM) Something to share and beware. There is a local pressing Teresa Teng collection CDs similar to what piscesguy shown. I just checked this CD at one of the local CD shops, though it stated marketed and distributed by Universal Music Ltd Hk, i read carefully further, it stated manufactured and printed in Malaysia, there is a sticker stated 3CDs for RM 46.70 (list price). However, it is sold at RM 33.90. There is no 'imported' sticker. Be extra cautious and careful when buying CDs. |

Not sure if these 2 albums by the great musician and poet Joni Mitchell have been recommended...
![]() ![]() Blue is the quintessential album but Court & Spark finds her at her best. She's happy here. |

hmm... does that mean that local production have a different or inferior quality compared to the imported ones?
Ex. those Eric Clapton and Il divo from Malaysia seen in front of Tower's records. |

want to abuse ur speakers/headphones to the limit?
u've heard nothing yet like Meshuggah their 7/8 strings guitars techniques make other bands look like noobies or for something less extreme u could also try these: Gordian Knot - Emergent *instrumental jazz + metal* Jeff Loomis - Zero Order Phase *instrumental metal, 7-string* Royksopp - The Understanding *ambient/techno/house* Al di Meola - Consequence of Chaos *instrumental guitar album, not so metal* Mats/Morgan Band - Thanks For Flying With Us *fusion jazz* enjoy |
