Everything seems to be stored in E:\private\1000484b\Mail2
In there is a file called Index, which appears to contain, surprise surprise, an index of all the messages sent and received.
There are also several directories, the only one of which that is obviously related to messaging is 00001001_S. In there are 16 subdirectories, 0 to 9 and a to f, so basically the 16 hex digits. What I don't know is how the system decides which messages go in which folder, but the structure of what's in each of them is as follows.
In the single hex digit subdirectory, for each message there's a file of which the name is a string of 8 hex digits. Apparently all of them start with 00101. For example, one of them on my handset is:
E:\private\1000484b\Mail2\00001001_S\e\001014ee
If the message has attachments, such as would an e-mail with attachments, a picture message or a file sent by BlueTooth, then there is also a directory with the same name as the main file with "_F" appended for messaged received, or "_S" for messages sent. In the case of my example above:
E:\private\1000484b\Mail2\00001001_S\e\001014ee_F\
For files received by BT, this directory simply contains the file that was received. Files sent by BT are managed elsewhere so don't get near the messaging subsystem.
For multipart messages sent or received, this directory contains all of the objects embedded in the message and a file called "pres.smil", which is an XML file describing the structure of the message, ie. the order in which the objects are displayed and the duration of each frame.
That's about as far as I got. Not much but it's a start anyway.
