You can do that......with 2.0
That option is built into iTunes 7.7. When you plug in your iPhone 2.0, right click on your iPhone, and you can choose either to synchronise or backup. But iTunes 7.7 came with a pretty serious bug, instead of being able to choose between sync or backup, it syncs and backs up EVERY TIME you plug in your iPhone 2.0. Why this is a glitch is because, backing up your iPhone 2.0 every time is time consuming, it does not back up incrementally like Time Machines, it does the full back up every time, at every sync. This bug has been raised in Apple discussion forum, and awaiting rectification. In the mean time, I simply cancel backup everytime I sync. But at least let the backup sequence run once, to make sure you have a backup. This is especially crucial, because with iTunes backup, supposedly you can restore your iPhone 2.0 right to the point of last backup, with all apps intact. Apps here means apps from the AppStore, not Installer. That is why it takes so long to do. |

Works like a charm,
I can now - search through my contacts - write chinese - play games from the app store - save images - use a scientific calculator - restrict my friends from accessing safari and stuff - etc. super monkey ball, is damn nice ! iPhone is now my tool, with some support by those utilities from the app store. thx apple, and of course the DevTeam --- Should notice that the flashing baseband process actually takes up to 20 mins, rather than the 2 mins that they mentioned on the pop up indicator =) --- anyone who is currently on the 2.0 plz report too ! xp |

If I were to upgrade to 2.0 while keeping my contacts and sms, how should I perform a backup? IIANM, there is not installer yet in 2,0, right? Thanks. |

Praise the brave warriors! Please post your findings, we need to gather as much details on this as possible. How's the performance of 2.0 on EDGE iPhones?
This is getting exciting! |
