Sony Ericsson have released the K850, the latest high-end Cybershot handset.

Packing a beefy 5 megapixel camera with 16x zoom and Xenon flash, the K850 weighs in at 118 grams, ever so slightly more than the earlier K800 and K810 devices. Available in Luminous Green or Velvet Blue and newly released Quicksilver Black, the phone has a 2.2inch 262k colour screen, 40mb internal memory and an M2 slot, with a 512MB stick thrown in for good measure.

Although initially sounding similar to the earlier K series handsets, the K850 does come with a few key improvements. First, the phone is the first to include an automatic lens cap, activated by pressing the camera button. It also comes with a new image manipulation program, Photo Fix, to automatically improve light balance on pictures. Sony Ericsson has also said that while in photo mode, only camera shortcut buttons will be illuminated on the main keyboard, as opposed to all buttons being lit all of the time.

alternatively you can try choosing FOTA (firmware over the air) update from your phone but not suggested cause it's too expensive.

Battery performance issues

how come i heard some users said tat k850 will lag when using?

By lag do you mean in UI? Back in the days of R1CA029 yes the UI was laggy and slow in responds but with the newest firmwares it has boosted the UI speed to a increment of 60% i must say.

lag is because the motion sensor rite?

at last start v3 edi... haha...

Well the motion censor seemed to be a little too sensitive so i won't say that it's the softkeys which are lagged, it's the UI where you open up an application and it takes a while before it runs.

Finally... V3!!!.. Well my hp got lag sometimes but still acceptable.. waiting for major firmware release!!!

It's hard for SE to release a major firmware when they are in so much development of many other kinds of models at the moment and as we know the K850 might be the last flagship of the K's we so much had throughout the many years, don't worry the phone is at it's best now after the R1EA031 firmware update months back.

I hope they still can release one last major fw.. At least fix all those stupid bugs and lagness.. don't worry bout all the drivers.. leave that to modders

Yes, all you need is download the Sony Ericsson Update Service program (SEUS) and then follow the on screen instructions.

just updated the firmware... the media player speed is very fast now... and my theme didn't automatically changed to crystal after i updated... hopefully it already fixed the bugs...

got my Velvet Blue one today, but then i find it a bit slower in responds compared to my old W810i

u updated the new firmware edi?? to me still ok... as u kno it has more function than w810 rite?? so itz normal if slower than it a bit... hehe...

i use skin.. transparent skin.. and so far it did a great job

3 way screen protector is the best solution i guess. As for skinning, some forumers giving not bad feedback, but for me, it will cover the prettiness of this baby and i always feels that its cacat when i hold my friend's phone because the cutting at the edge of the skinning are very bad. But i guess it will be nice if the sifu of skinning is PRO enough to skin ur phone

Yep.. Depends on the skills of the people who skin it.. as for mine.. my friends hardly notice there's a skin on it.. have to look really close not that bad for rm39 including skinning service

You can always download Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) and update it yourself.
It's very easy and you just have to follow it step by step then you should be able to have the latest R1EA037 firmware

If so, it should be your CDA number incompatible with APAC region firmware CDA number.
To have yourself enjoy update from SEUS in future, you can try to flash your firmware to the latest R1EA037 with APAC region CDA number.

AP set = oversea set (most of them)
It comes with oversea firmware which the firmware CDA number is follow by region so the set bring to Malaysia, update at APAC region, it won't get up to date as the CDA number is incompatible

K850i (DB3150 if not mistaken) still unsupported by free flash tool like XS/Settool. So far only wotan/davinci pay service capable to upgrade K850i firmware if AP (for those CDA & IMEI not match base on SEUS calculation)

so that means im stuck with my old firmware?

the cheapest i found for pay service is kulankendi.... 8 euro.... other like davinci and wotan need 10 euro ler.. haih

just realised it didn't fixed the theme bug for the latest firmware.. cause just now i was talking on the phone, half way, the call suddenly dropped and the screen went black... and guess what, the theme changed automatically to crystal again...

ermmm... in my opinion, 3 way protector is good enough edi... coz if skinning, scare it will leave unwanted mark when u peel it off... jus my 2 cent...

But the 3 way protector doesn't provide protection on the side wor, am i right? so if you are a velvet blue user better be more careful.. coz the silverish side if got scratch can be seen easily. Last time my phone did skin an when removed its mark-free and FYI i removed it myself just by peeling off without any special skill..

I now a new inductee of K850i hall of fame!..my previous 810i is now owned by someone else within my family.
I was really torn between W960i and 850, but in the end, the K850i fits my bill and the W is priced just a bit too much and I think I prefer the K series features better.

ISO or ASA in the most basic terms is the speed with which your film or digital camera responds to light, so the higher the ISO/ASA rating the more sensitive the film or CCD/CMOS sensor is to light.

It was answered. Probably you can't find the ISO setting because your firmware has a camera driver that doesn't include manual ISO setting.

I updated my firmware to latest through SEUS. There was some trouble doing it on my Athlon XP pc..somehow the USB flash drivers didn't initialize and ended up failed or error. Nevermind that..took a bath, relax a while, I used my HP Compaq laptop which also stores all my ringtones, themes and anything else phone related.. Kick up the SEUS program and everything went smoothly according to instructions. All kau tim in 15 mins I think. I think there's some speed difference in Media Player when it reads your media library catalog. Before, it somehow took a while longer. Imagine you store HUGE number of media files in bigger memory card, am sure it'll take longer to read, WHICH owners complain of lag...OF COURSE LAG lah..more files to read!

I really like the MegaBass feature, although audiophiles may say its "un-natural or bloated", its can sound richer and less fatigue. I really missed this on the K810i.

really agree that the silver side of velvet blue is kinda difficult to take care of... mine already have tiny visible scratches...

My baby restart again this noon.. 2 times some more with 5 mins interval. First one occurred when i was about to push the camera button to snap document pics and another one while i was typing sms..

I wanna sell my phone already.. not!! have faith and wait for new firmware.. have faith!!!!!

Anyway i did the skin at IPOH PARADE, Ipoh.. for rm39.. and my phone was the their first K850 phone to be skinned like that. Coz at first they told me they couldn't do full skin, only front and rear cover but i say try to do full laa.. by the way it took nearly 2 hours.. and for the time being they can only do transparent skin for the rear cover..

OK...for those who want to know whether can use 4GB microSDHC card (Sandisk) or not in this phone.. CAN!.. and I found out its formatted in FAT32, whereas M2 card is formatted in FAT. The memory status reports correctly.
I've now transfered all my music and stuff (1.xxGB) to this new card and its now working well!..touch wood!.
RM69 at AllIT DIgital Mall..no one sells cheaper there than AllIT..I checked around.
That plastic film is the same brand I use in my other K810i. excellent!

Mine is a AP set, I just updated to latest firmware last nite through SEUS for free..all went well mah!..(except for few quirks related to my PC..not the phone). As long as you have original firmware installed previously and can be recognized as legitimate by SEUS, it'll detect the actual version and apply the appropriate upgrade firmware...simple as that!.

I wish it was as simple as that, and i don't have to think bout laggy media stuff already xD But mine's an ap set too, and the firmware is still at version one an can't like update through SEUS, think that it's the CDA problem and region etc etc, so was asking here lur =P

As I go through some of the forum, K850i can't modify yet so you can't change the CDA number yourself. The easiest way is to pay for a reflash

This is what i've heard too, that's why i'm all blur @@ had to change back to my 512mb card instead of the 2gb one i bought cause it'll lag in the media part ><

the current firmware has a huge improvement compared to the STOCK firmware..
I guess not many problems now..

I think I detected a bug last nite. Uploaded into memory some converted into mp4 youtube files and I detected lipsync problem (what is lipsync?..sound and video not sync)

I also faced problems like you with the sync but i found out that it's the vid's that i converted were at fault and i tried other source on the same vid which then worked fine.

I'm guessing there's nothing wrong with the video. I'm guessing too that the Media Player or something to do with the hardware is not up to mark. The same converted video plays without a problem on K810i. If you were to encode any video in basic or lower quality, you'd sure see a basic or poor quality video on screen, and its so obvious on the K850.

Anyway, I've been reading SE forums and this video/audio sync has been addressed in much earlier firmware, but its now clear to me its not entirely eliminated and the latest firmware revision does NOT address this issue. Something is not right here. BUT, if you encode say some youtube flv file in basic or much lower resolution or audio quality, then NO PROBLEM. My final encoded files are near highest encoding possible and as I said, doesn't pose a problem in K810i, but its very persistent in K850i. I'm beginning to become disillusioned to this model for a number of issues after playing with it for a while, despite a huge price difference over the K810i. Actually someone very knowledgeble and a frequent phone kaki, did warn me this is NOT entirely a great model, yet ?????

Meanwhile, I'm also finding the buttons and ring a bit harder to press than K810 or K800. Its even harder than my Logitech mouse button. Here again, a minor irritation to me. SE should have had it much softer.

Oh well..sorry for negative rants today..I had expected SO MUCH!.. who knows my next few posts could be..in GARAGE SALE!..

Mine just go into the repair department~!!

I just use until the battery fully finished and re-charge it for 2 hrs then the phone just wont wake up Try to take out the battery and plug it back in but there's still no respond. Try to reflash but when flashing, i think since the phone is in "Sleep Mode" so there's nothing happen as the software didn't get the chance to be save into the phone. Now is in the repair department liaw..

I heard the staff there says most probably software problems and advise me not to fully finish off the battery. Charge when it says lack of batt or warning.. I thought all this while ok boh.. why suddenly like this..

ps :- shop name was 'leading communication' if im not mistaken. perhaps because the prices have been slashed (ap was about 1150 at the time of purchase) therefore, the ori sets were sold with a better bundle.
