Good day all planeswalkers. Shawn here and I am totally new to MTG. Have a few questions in mind and hope to get some answers here:
1. Appx. how much $$ to be invested before one can be competitive in tourneys?
2. MTG or MTGO? What'r the ups and downs?
3. What's the Luck vs. Skill ratio in MTG? 5:5?
4. What'r the average tourney payouts?
5. If I'm not mistaken, MTG cards are released by stages, how often is that?
6. Are new releases always better than the old ones?
7. How much $$ to be invested/month on upkeeping the cards to stay competitive?
8. Any opinion to a newbie?
Thanks for your time. Very much appreciated
this is my 2c worth of advice as a retired old school player
1. depends on what kind of style you are trying to play, look up on the web and search for the best style or theme decks that suits your style
2. MTGO is online i think so you pay the same amount of money for virtual cards
3. luck and skill both plays a part but most of the time i set it to 60:40 in favour of luck
4. depends on where you are i guess but most of the tourneys in malaysia i believe have small cash value but high on free cards. to get the most
mullah you need to be in the world championships in the us that is held every year. its like the olympics for MTG. the further i went with this is for the group stages of the sydney leg of the championships to get a state champ
5. last time about every 6 months now not sure
6. depends if the intro new game mechanics to the system, some time better sometimes worst most of the time they will reprint old cards with errata or not reprint at all due to its brokenness
7. see no1.
8. start small, concentrate on a few mono colors then try and mix and match the colors. generally MTG comprise of 5 colors plus artifacts. they are broken down to usually:
black = mostly undead stuff that can get back dead creatures from the graveyard and cards that requires you to make sacrifices to summon great magiks
blue = by far the largest creatures in the game but very hard to summon. this color controls cards either in play, going to be played, in graveyard or library
red = direct attack magiks like fireballs, lightning bolts etc, their creatures usually have low hitpoints but high attack and no summoning sickness like berzerkers
green = easier big creatures to summon, their mana production is 2nd to none and regenerative abilities
white = your classic goody 2 shoes color with healing spells and protection and creatures with high hit points but low attack
artifacts = basically its like MacGuyver and his trusty pocketknife, very usefull in certain decks but so far in MTG these card group have i believe the most broken cards in its history i.e. black lotus and the moxes
