Woot! The very first Wimax user in LYN. Hey, mind to tell us more about it?
I'm curious what will happen after the trial. Do they give you the option to continue with the plan or they just take it back? |

Wow this is great news. Signed up for the trial and I've managed to get some in-sight scoop on their WiMax service. My friend is using the service as we speak , he doesn't want to post any screenies as he said that there is some sort of agreement that prohibits trial users to publish information
1) They are providing you with an External IP Address (just like streamyx) (Maxis will be dead meat after this , thank you maxis). This allows you to host games , and it will work for p2p. Horray ! 2) The modem seems to be really big and bulky. Guess its the first generation. 3) Just like most of the wireless service out there , latency seems to be somewhat consistent. The ping rates are way lower then HSDPA , but then its not consitent as streamyx. At one moment you can get 68ms , the other moment 110ms. But so far it doesn't exceed 120ms for local links which seems to be good. 4) Speed on the other hand seems to be good. YouTube streaming is superb and I am able to stream live P2P Streaming stuff. It works like a charm as well I'll try to persuade that guy to allow me to post the traceroute results I'll also try to post my own results tooo once i've managed to get my hands on it ! |

talking about trial period which is 2 weeks, they told me that if i'm not satisfied with the service, I can just give the modem back to them without any charge. I also asked them on the package i.e. the monthly fees and initial subscription. But they weren't able to tell me (perhaps they haven't yet decided the final pricing). So i asked them with a different kind of question which could probably gimme an answer.... "What's the price if i loose them modem??" they told me that I will hv to pay them RM 1500. ahaaa.. so i guess this will be the price then. however i'm just assuming. not sure what's the actual pricing.
the signal is quiet stable.. most of the time i usually get green colour (RED=week, ORANGE=moderate, GREEN=good). And I don't even need to put near the window. my living room is fine. btw if you guys wanna know, i'm living at bdr baru sentul and i've done some research on other broadband services i.e. MAXIS (very poor), CELCOM (the speed rocks!), streamyx (never tried this before) and lastly WIMAX (really really rockss!! ).. so far WIMAX is pretty good/stable and i'm quiet impress with the speed. BT is absolutely fine. tried to download a movie (350mb in size), it took 3.5 hours to complete. seems good to me.. and this download activity was done while i'm heavily browsing (youtube) and downloading other stuffs! heheh.. it's a free trial rite! when i agreed to give wimax a try, they told me that there's only 1000 subscribers at this juncture. not really sure what will happen to the network when 100,000 people are subscribing. btw, here's the todays speed clocked using P1 inet speed (http://speed.p1.com.my/) |

My friend is using the service as we speak , he doesn't want to post any screenies as he said that there is some sort of agreement that prohibits trial users to publish information I recalled watching an interview with P1 CEO (not sure) and he said the big bulky modem is aimed towards users who use it at home. There will be smaller usb modem around the same size as HSDPA modem like the one offered by maxis/celcom but it will come out at a later date.1) They are providing you with an External IP Address (just like streamyx) (Maxis will be dead meat after this , thank you maxis). Regarding the pricing, I guess they will try to be competitive with streamyx so if the package is 1mbps I guess they will charge rm80/90 monthly but this is excluding the modem. I guess we will find out more about the pricing in August since it is the last month for Wimax operator to roll out their service and avoid the penalty. |

Hmm ... looking at the throughput, it seems like they are limiting the bandwidth to 1.5Mbps DL and 512kbps UL. That is 512kbps DL and 128kbps UL higher than StreamyX ... lol ... P1 is trying to intimidate TMnet hehehehe
Latency is low which is good, but jitter is important to determine whether the network is suitable for real time services. Is there a way to measure the jitter rate of the service? prasys, where are your locations? |

Though as mentioned, the ping rates seems a little odd. I wonder why does it happen. QUOTE(freezbies @ Jul 29 2008, 06:07 PM) That is seriously good. More so I want to get my own Wimax so I won't have to share the Streamyx in the house anymore. Yeay! I tried out the speed test with my Streamyx and must say I'm no where near proud of it. Attached thumbnail(s) |

QUOTE(yangxi @ Jul 29 2008, 11:09 PM) hopefully with emerging competition, streamyx will get better...otherwise you'll just end up with another monopoly by wimax and we don't want that do we? Anyway thanks to the person who answered my question..I guess we'll have to wait for the usb modem to come out. |

QUOTE(yangxi @ Jul 29 2008, 07:30 PM) Yes , you get a Public IP Address. The IP range is 120.140.0.x - 124.141.0.x (I believe). The modem is a modem , you dont have to port forward if you have connected it directly to a PC !QUOTE(p4n6 @ Jul 29 2008, 10:09 PM) Setapak , to be more precise - Jln Genting Klang (on top of the Kenny Rogers restaurant) QUOTE(etsuko @ Jul 29 2008, 10:23 PM) From start to finish, I'm really more and more sold of its promise so far. QUOTE(yangxi @ Jul 29 2008, 11:09 PM) Honestly , your point doesn't make sense at all. TM provides a decent service so far with minor hiccups now and then. There isn't a single prefect iSP out there. IMO , you should opt for SDSL if you want more consistent speed. The more you pay , the better your service will be ! - But I do agree that TMnets service sucks. Heck , it even goes out to most of the ISPs out there here in Malaysia and Singapore !QUOTE(Suk @ Jul 30 2008, 03:25 AM) more ppl = slow... They have implemented QoS. Meaning that they always have the rights to throttle your bandwidth which is good and bad. The good news is that you can still p2p , watch youtube , download files and surf without any hiccups. the bad news is that , your p2p downloads might be slower !at the moment i dont think they will throttle, but future for sure... all ISP hates P2P activities running in their network. Hope Wimax does not become like Izzinet or Jaring WBB.
However, I have to concur the ping looks impressive. This post has been edited by soul2soul: Jul 30 2008, 10:45 AM |

QUOTE(soul2soul @ Jul 30 2008, 10:43 AM) I thought the ping is not far different from Streamyx. I'm using Streamyx 1mbps and did the test on their page and gets about the same speed too. Nevertheless, still can't wait to be able to try WiMAX for myself..why is it confidential for those testers and cannot reveal much info? Any tester using the USB modem outside of home? |
