I just got a 70-200 f4 yesterday n still learning how to make best use of a 70-200 lens. Any tips on how far we shud be when taking portraits with this lens? I also noticed a big difference in sharpness when I tried f4 vs f8 at 200mm. Is this true for the whole focal range from 70 all the way up to 200mm?

OMG. A dedicated L Lens thread here. Hope to see some serious gears like the 100-400 in action or my fav 70-200 f/2.8 IS. If we lucky enough, maybe even the prime teles of 300mm, 400mm and above....

Cant really see it after I resize to fit 640x480. But when I open it up to actual size on my 30" monitor, can really see the diff. I suppose f4 is used only when we're really desperate for more speed or more bokeh?

I'm actually more in support of opening a Leica Summilux, Zeiss Superachromat and Apotar thread. I can only wish to own both of the latter. Can't help it, i'm starting to dislike Jappy lenses as keep seeing the sharpness from their Conti cousins

Some ppl use 70-200 2.8f L for potrait shots, so that the model don feel so weird that u stand too near her/him... Can I ask a question? mmmm.. the lense is so long and huge, how to use for potrait ah? convenient meh?

well, normally people don't use till the 200mm end anyways. Perhaps 70-135mm range to be more common.

You can't stand too near lol, the Minimum focusing distance of this heavy biatche is about 1.4 meters, it's hard to handle due to it's weight some more so if you wield it with it's tripod collar and 2x Extender, but rest assured, take it out enough times and you'll have arms the size of cranes.

Personally it does the 85mm portrait shots extremely well and it's even easier to do so with the batt grip. Plus it has the added ability of zoom versatility.

not to say convenient or not convenient.. using dslr is already not convenient.. So why the heck care about convenience? LOL... some use 70-200 is to take portraits so that the model can express more of themselves because you are not around them and they do not know where you are too. For eg, wedding photography. some use 70-200mm even for studio shooting so that they get a clear separation of the blurred background and the model in the picture.

I got both A200 n 40D mar.

1) Should I get a tamron 17-50mm f/2.8+flashgun or canon 17-40mm f/4? I use it as a replacement for kit lens and I will use the lens indoors quite frequently. Price is a factor.
2) Can the 70-200 be a suitable substitute for 85mm?

you use 40D already, should aim at least D80 mah.

if you use A100 and 350D then D40 ok la. you compare.

1. If your budget is tight, get Tammy 17-50mm f2.8 + flashgun. If you afford 17-40mm f4 L, go for it.
2. 70-200mm is meant for covering events, 85mm is more to portraits. Two different thingy

the weight is a concern... 2.8L IS weighs 1.5kg.. hahah after you take all those girls' pictures, your hand cannot raise already..

How much is the 17-40mm f/4L market price now; local warranty and grey unit?

2350. local warranty if u get it from me la.. grey unit price wont be cheap either. because of the low demand. most people ask for tamron 17-50 f2.8

It's around RM25xx with Canon Malaysia warranty.

2.8 works better in low light condition, but the weight of the lens is 2 times more. With IS, slightly heavier, can reduce handshake and easier for panning. 4L IS is a 3rd gen IS that can work up to 4 stops while 2.8L IS is a 2nd gen IS that can work up to 3 stop

it's a company set. anything wrong with it, send it back to me for service with canon malaysia, we cover the expenses.

get it right before making a purchase,

it doesnt come with a warranty card becoz this is an oversea set which has not been sold out during the clearance sale at other country, so they have to transfer it to our country to cover the losses and my friend bought it for cheap. it's brand new and unused. we will give out an invoice so that u can make the claim if anything goes wrong.

right now have to order since we dont have stock.

for grey set(japan set), the price is not very convincing to sell it out. its almost similar with local retail price.

TQ for the explanation. The price is not bad actually, Amazon.com sells it for ~Rm2130 after conversion.
I would like to get a UWA but this lens is only 17mm on a FF body, on crop sensor, not UWA enough.

Sigh, the 10-22 is not an L and still same price.

problem is i got to pay in full and have to wait for your stock. there's much to much to loose and it is very risky on my part.
if only you accept a 10% deposit while the remaining balance is paid upon delivery, i might probably buy the 16-35 f2.8L and 70-200 f2.8L IS from you.

Hurrr, getting my 3 50mm lenses today, right after i pay the tax for them.

50mm 1.2L (New)
50mm 1.4 Zeiss Planar (New)
50mm 2.0 Summicron (2nd hand, bloody good price)

Will play between the Zeiss and the Canon L and sell one off next month. Jualed my 16-35 and 25-105 to a friend to sponsor this 50mm madness. Stupid 5D still back focusing, very mempersialkan, will drive to Brissy during holidays next week to get it calibrated.

the lens is only 3 months old, local should be selling abt 3.6k above.

U fellas use UV filters or just Protector filters on ur L Lenses? I tried UV n there is a slight change in the color of the pics. Very slight but it is noticeable in back to back comparison. I was thinking mebe I shud get a Protector which is just multi coated but no UV instead. Good idea?

Hoya UV Pro1 filters on all my lenses except for the kitlens and the 50mm (raydawn)

UV filters also got multiple versions. The more expensive ones do not have this problem (I think)

Most that I've heard is the thickness causes vignetting.

I am using only Pro1D UV on all my lenses. Just wondering if it's better to go for clear Protector Pro1D instead of UV.

So far only using a HOYA HMC UV 77mm for my wide. The lens hood is pretty shallow for that compared to my tele which has a longer/deeper lens hood. So currently no filter on the tele. But will consider getting a UV Filter soon for that....

Yeah. 1 Step lower than the PRO-1 version if Im not mistaken. But It can't be ~ RM100 when my UV HMC itself is already RM130-RM140 @ 77mm. Or did you mis-read the CPL? Will be great if there is someone here well versed with the current pricings to enlighten me wif the price for the PRO version and the HMC Version?

the non pro version of CPL is Rm150. The Pro1 is 320

The cheapest shop I cud find for Pro1D filters is International Camera in Pertama Complex. But if u want cheaper online, Shashinki has sum really low prices for Pro1D. Check it out.

if u get the pro1 for ~rm100 means u got the fake ver. i know some famous seller are doing that! my fren was con once!

there is a huge price difference for Kenko and Hoya though they are from the same manufacturer. for me the filter is just acting as a protector for the lens, as long as not affecting the picture quality, any brand will do.

Who says cannot get Pro1D for rm100? It all depends on what size u buy. The smaller sizes are cheaper. Those crazy shops that sell it at rm300+ are just making excuses as to why they're selling at such grossly marked up prices by saying the rest all fakes.

Anyway, it's almost impossible to be conned into buying fake Pro1D, it's so easy to check the multi coating. Lousy glass with cheap multi coating is very reflective. U can hardly see any reflections on a Pro1D. Doesnt take a genius to know which is fake n which is real.

Didn't I say that I got the Pro1 77mm for RM150 UV, and then the 1 step lower one will be slightly cheaper, but dunno how much since didn't ask.

I got the Pro1 on 58mm for Rm100.

Hows Shashinki in terms of reliability? Their prices are quite cheap thou... ..

the towkey is currently living in Japan. so when japan is having those big sales on camera items, he would buy all of them in bulk hence the competitive price.

you do not need to worry on back/front focussing issues as he will test all the thing he bought and should there be any problem, you'll have to return the item to his agent in ayer tawar, ipoh (you pay).

all the delivery charges from ipoh to japan and back to you shall be borne by shahinki.

Best filter = B+W from Schneider Krueznach Optics. The Hoyas i've used have a tendency to make my vignetting a tad bit worse, and when compared to other CPLs, the color transition leaves alot to be desired. I'm not sure, but TheVOIP says that the color fringing is a characteristic of the Hoya line of filters, but personally i've never seen it.

I've tried a few Cokins but the filter holder is annoying at best and doesn't cover the lense from scratch attack. I am a Klutz and i know it, thus i keep protection on at all times, atleast a hood by the very least.

shashinki is kinda good. got my tamron 17-50mm. 24-105L is a good lense. If u mount it on full frame camera,like 5D....... lagi chun......
24-70L is also good. but as i stated earlier, it's heavy...........
70-200L f4 IS is good enough, no need to get the f2.8 actually.........
used to have 70-200L non IS, not so good coz it's heavy, and hand shake..........

Great East Vs West Battle.

3 Way battle between the old legend, the Zeiss Planar 1.4, a legend in it's own the Leica Summilux 2.0 and the Japanese Contender the 1.2L

My plan is to operate them all in MF, in which the Canon feels pretty sucky in. The Leica's MF is abit scratchy due to the fact the MF mechanism contacts with the built in Lense hood, but once you pull it out, it moves like a charm. The Zeiss' MF ring is long but not too long to add frustration and has a great feel to it.

I just bought EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.
Have to wait untill Saturday only can used it.
Because my friend from HongKong send it down by using fedEx.
I can't wait to heard the USM sound and how fast is the lens.

Maybe my next target will be the 70-200mm f/2.8 USM IS end of year.
The filter size all the same.
I can buy 1 pc of ND, Polarizer and UV filter each.
Save up alot right.

But I don't think you will want the hassle of having to open/put back the UV filter. So, perhaps you can't save on the UV filter but yes on the ND and the CPL.

So the price will be different abit.
Later got problem within the warranty period.

But the price is not big difference. When I bought, there was multiple offers so that's why the price was 98x (excl shipping). Normal price = USD1139 or something like that.

it is a good buy nonetheless. And since got intl Warranty, lagi cun.

Usually, lenses no issues one lah. Except for focus issues lah.

In my view the 24-70 isn't flexible enough when coupled with a crop body, i mooted buying one when using my 350D, but getting around 40mm at wide wasn't really doing it for me. The 24-105L doesn't have the extra 2 stops, but it makes up with 2 stop IS and better versatility, but since i'm on FF and my AF is buggy i figured i'd be better served with MF, i sold it.

Although if you're into razor sharp DOF and light portrait, i feel the 24-70 is very justified and versatile too. Not a candidate for night shooting in my view as IS would serve better than the 2 extra stops from the glass. USM well, it's nice, but the nicest part is the full time manual focus that allows you to adjust after an AF lock, i consider this to be one of the best features of the L series

As for filters, you probably won't save much as you'd want one filter to stay on the lense to protect it in my opinion

the 2.8 serves its purpose better than the IS I think. (though 2.8 w/ IS is the best)

Since IS does not stop motion only camera shake.

Depends on what you're shooting at the end of the day.

I shoot very static objects during the night, thus i take my time MF and large apetures. I guess it's just a matter of opinion and of course subjects at the end of the day.

Can anyone advise where is the best place locally to get a 24-105L? I asked a few shops in Lowyat/Bkt Bintang and it ranges from 4.3k -4.7k. I thought should be able to get below 3.7k? Or is that Grey set?

I target is to have this lens continue with 70-200 f/2.8mm USM IS.
Later i will change my 350D to Full frame or 1.3x crop sensor camera body.
So my lens is about 24-70mm to 70-200mm. Later 16-35mm.
Than my lens is completed for me on my assignment.
