Komtar- Even way back in late 80 & early 90's the shops inside Komtar worst than Sg Wang - My recent visit last week-- so many empty lots and ceiling near to Govt offces side like colapsing liao haha...The only nicely maintained but underutilised is the Komtar walk where the new Teochew Cendol located..RM2.50 per bowl of cendol..probably the most espensive in penang haha.

The new (?) IT centre in Komtar just beside 1st Ave also OK very quiet & lotsa empty stalls too. Is it the largest IT mall in Penang?

1st Avenue is nice & modern. so do Prangin mall as well. All these malls are interconnected via overhead bridges

BTW, the list should include Penang Times Square. probably the most nicely designed Malls & condo/ serviced condo in Georgetown? - But too many empty lots inside and dunno why the Sunshine City supermarket located in such a hulu-hulu 4th flr.. For new visitor, finding this supermarket probably a headache haha

Sunshine Group got a so called super duper good deal to be there but I dunno how long can they tahan to open without customer!
Penang Times Square - ho kua but boh ho chiak. - nice looking place but can't do business. Very bad accessibility and located in a congested part of town.

Hey thanks ghoss, etigge, stimix and DarkNite! You guys provided great resource! I'm definitely striking KOMTAR off my list!
I read that it's a administrative building.. Iwonder do the officials still work in the office towers today?
Basically I will be in penang for the food! So going to some of the malls, probably will help to take a breather, and "cool off" between all the treats!

Actually currently Penang Time Square car park is 100% free..well for short while since the complex is only ~ 30% occupied. There is no jam during weekend around komtar so I think it's OK for tourist lor. The problpem is the emptiness of the retailers there haha. But I do luv the design of this highrise..like those hi-end condo rclxms.gif

Sunshine supermarket - Yeah I found their Korean food items super cheap there...The greenish isotonic korean drink featured prominently in Kdrama - My GF is gumiho - selling only RM4.90 for 1.5ltr instead of ~ RM7 in KL hypermart rclxms.gif But not all items having super duper deal-lor..Only my complain..Why wanna open a supermarket high up on 4th floor? Does not make sense at all rclxub.gif

If you don't mind there is a lot of budget hostel around georgetown area.

Else you can get around 100/night in a better condition .

You're welcome ,

Personally I suggest you go to Gurney Plaza / Queensbay Mall / 1st Avenue / Straits Quay.
These places is worth going .

For foodwise , go to food courts so you can try a lot of food at 1 go .

balik pulau sounds like a great place to go! Another forumer recommended this place for it's fruit farms too. It seems far flung from the city centre though. Did you drive there yourself, and how long did it take?

And are there many fruit farms there? Any recommendations? searched the web but results were quite generic.

There are many fruits farms but very few are open to public or able to entertain tourist.
The fruit farms are not very far most are within half an hour drive from the city (if no jam or landslides or heavy rain) laugh.gif

If you wan to just buy the local fruits, you can go to Balik Pulau market or Anjung Indah.
Currently it is durian season in Balik Pulau, so the Anjung Indah, name of Balik Pulau Lookout point, is having temporary stall selling durian there.

Will be going to penang in the next two weeks.. checked out some shopping places

1) KOMTAR
2) Queensbay Mall
3) Gama Shopping Centre
4) 1st Avenue Shopping Mall
5) Prangin Mall
6) Straits Quay
7) Gurney Plaza

Read that Komtar is quite old, and has nothing much to offer today. Just would like to know - are these places generic in nature, and should I make an effort to visit them all? As far as I know, (3), (4) and (5) are close to each other. Treating this visit as a relaxation, so don't mind splurging a bit. My (could be wrong) impression of night bazaars are of knicks knacks and little trinklets which I totally have no interest in. Any recommendations, guys?
*
Here is my comment on those places

1) KOMTAR - Very old building. Almost empty with very few shop left. You can take alook when you visit prangin mall.
2) Queensbay Mall - Largest Shopping mall in Penang. High end shop to some low end shop. TGI Friday is there
3) Gama Shopping Centre - Things inside very cheap for locals(ladies pad is cheap.). Cloth mostly aunties but cheap especially during sales
4) 1st Avenue Shopping Mall - I go to this shopping mall once since was born Penang. No comment.
5) Prangin Mall - Mostly Sungai wang like cloth. Some of the shop overprice while some are cheap. The only thing i get there is contact lens at groud floor. Try to nego abit.
6) Straits Quay - I don know where is this
7) Gurney Plaza - High end shops. but u still can find FOS and Parkson there.

I been staying in KL for 4 years and 3 years in Singapore. So things I know might got outdate.

Hello people. I will be heading to Penang next weekend.

The two places that are high on my priority list are kek lok si and penang hill.

Any other suggestions on where to go? My friend told me straits quay seems like a new place to take a look. Will head out to batu ferringhi and hard rock hotel as well I think. Can cross out gurney drive and queensbay as I've already been there.

Added on June 17, 2011, 1:00 amBtw main priority will be sight seeing. Want take more photos. laugh.gif

Adults and none halal.
