Will be going to penang in the next two weeks.. checked out some shopping places

1) KOMTAR - Quite old nothing much to see
2) Queensbay Mall - Longest mall ,
3) Gama Shopping Centre - same as komtar
4) 1st Avenue Shopping Mall - nothing much a few branded brands is there like coach / cotton on .
5) Prangin Mall - lala & ah beng place , lot's of cheap stuffs there
6) Straits Quay - High class place to eat , nothing to shop
7) Gurney Plaza - Good place to shop around but be early to avoid jam in the car park area .

Read that Komtar is quite old, and has nothing much to offer today. Just would like to know - are these places generic in nature, and should I make an effort to visit them all? As far as I know, (3), (4) and (5) are close to each other. Treating this visit as a relaxation, so don't mind splurging a bit. My (could be wrong) impression of night bazaars are of knicks knacks and little trinklets which I totally have no interest in. Any recommendations, guys?
*
*Note* 1st Avenue + Komtar + Pragin + Gama = can say all within walking distance to each other.

Gurney Plaza + Straits quay not walking distance but quite close , only queensbay quite far away.

Besides you missed out
Bukit Jambul = Same as pragin mall but more <insert race>
Midlands park 1stop = Great place to get computer gears + pirated DVD
Island Plaza (near to Straits Quay) , nothing much to see but the quality not bad.

Any hostel or hotel that recommend for 4 days 3 nights  jalan jalan makan makan trip, for 1 person  ?

If you don't mind there is a lot of budget hostel around georgetown area.

Else you can get around 100/night in a better condition .

Hey thanks ghoss, etigge, stimix and DarkNite! You guys provided great resource! I'm definitely striking KOMTAR off my list!
I read that it's a administrative building.. Iwonder do the officials still work in the office towers today?
Basically I will be in penang for the food! So going to some of the malls, probably will help to take a breather, and "cool off" between all the treats!
Darknite, what is this super good deal you are talking about?
*
You're welcome ,

Personally I suggest you go to Gurney Plaza / Queensbay Mall / 1st Avenue / Straits Quay.
These places is worth going .

For foodwise , go to food courts so you can try a lot of food at 1 go .

Good All Cafe

Hye..

I'm planning to go to Penang around November or early December.
My purpose to go there is = To Jalan-jalan and makan-makan,a little shopping and just enjoys myself, relaxing from working days.
I will go there using Air Asia cause now they have promo.
I know nothing about the best hotel or the best stall/restaurant food, shopping mall there.
So, i need suggestion from Lowyat Fren who know bout that.

Where to stay?

Which Hotel?
If can, the hotel must be not so far from all the great kedai makan/stall/restaurant,mall.

Which area have popular food?

Which mall that ok to go.

Renting a car? I think i will need a car there. So any suggestion on where to rent? How much the rate?

What food we must not forget to try when going to penang?
In my mind only set Nasi Kandar.Others can u suggest? Halal of course.
Tq in advance!!

I recommend Golden View , It's a service apartment , rooms as low as Rm100/night .

Rent car not too sure but roughly from what I heard is around 60-80 per day for kancil(not sure if they're giving viva now biggrin.gif )

Find Food one of the link of a fellow penang member.

Basically things you need to visit ,

Gurney Plaza / Queensbay Mall / 1st Avenue (quite new nothing much to see). Night time go Batu Feringgi or Gurney Drive to eat (just to taste only , you won't find anything good there and it's quite expensive tho)

Most of the tourist spot which I never went to is

Snake Temple / Butterfly farm / Tropical Spice Garden .

Hi all,

I am planning to drive to Penang next week from KL with 8 of my college mate. Staying there for 2 days and 1 night. It is quite a short period. Planning to leave KL about 6am and reaching there about 12pm or 1pm. Check in at 2pm. What can we do after that? Could anyone tell me or suggest what can we do beside visit temples and gardens? unsure.gif

Honestly, I had been Penang twice with family November last year. Every time we went to the same location. Kek Lok Si, Penang Hill, those gardens or buttery farm. But this time, I'm going with friends. Most of them were not interested in those as, well, I mean is actually quite common cause we visit the same attraction every trip. No offense here. smile.gif

Is there something else we can do? Any recommendation? Like maybe beach? Appreciate your help. biggrin.gif

Maybe you can go , snake temple , spice garden @batu ferringi .

Mostly penang is all about the food drool.gif drool.gif

any reviews of this place yet?

Seems good that place , never been there.

Remember to go around blogs to look for recommendation and don't go to tourist hotspots like gurney drive , sure taste bad and expensive.

That's cheap.

Yeah, road side parking. No meter but got majlis perbandaran personal will take care of the place until 9PM only.
After that is at your own risk.

Don't put any valuable and it should be ok

I am biased.  If this is a trip for relaxing, find a hotel along Batu Ferreinghi or Tanjung Bungah.
*
If Tg Bungah , can go for Good Hope Inn . But I do suggest staying at town area is better to look around.

Hello,

A quick question to you guys here, is it advisable to take a cab directly from the Bayan Lepas Airport to Tune Hotels located downtown ?
Thanks ..
*
Taxi is very expensive in penang and most of them doesn't use meter.

I would suggest you to try to call the hotel and arrange for airport transfer and see if they can.

Tune Hotel - Downtown Penang
100 Burmah Road, 5 mins from Komtar in George Town
