Yes, it use similar material like wood flooring, but can use thin wood. Like 11mm. Installation is cheaper. Think can be done maybe RM 10 or lower  per sqft. The wood flooring worker tell me can use same wood but thinner for ceiling and he can do it (part time) because don't need heavy duty sanding machine.

My suggestion for you is, the minimum requirement of the downlights that needed for a room is at least 4 (at the corner).
So it can create balance brightness for you. P/s never install your light near to your fan, it might create shadow when the fan is turn on and it will really make you faith.

T5 is the size of the tube. For your case they used to hide it between the gap of the plasters to create the aesthetic effect. There is T4,T5 and T8. The normal 4ft fluorescent lamp that have been commonly used is T8. T5 fluorescent is not long lasting and have alot of problems, unless you choose the LED type of T5 which is brighter, durable, save up to 80% energy but a little bit expensive. (I recommend you to get the LED T5 set)

hi all,

it is a bit of a personal choice, but i recommend to do away with the false ceiling and down lights that will require multiple lighting points.
all these cost money!

we used either
1. wall lights
2. under ceiling fan lights
3. simple ceiling mounted lights
4. table/floor standing lights for the mood
overall cheaper and easier maintenance

take a look here if you like.

I agree with you. It's silly to put up plaster ceiling just because you want to install some down lights but sometimes we need plaster ceiling to cover up ugly beams.

I'm going to see how I can do without plaster ceiling. As for down lights, I will never install them again. Just too many problems.

But has anyone use plaster boards to make a false wall?

I was told by a lighting vendor that if there is a chance of rain splashes, then it is better to avoid LED lights as humidity reduces the lifespan of LED lights. My T5 outdoors are CFL.
