how to sound as good as V1800...price also double for the V1800....

Speakers Impedance:-

for 6 ohm setting:-
Front A or B - 4 ohm min
Front A + B - 6 ohm min
others - 8 ohm min

for 8 ohm setting:-
Front A or B - 6 ohm min
Others - 8 ohm min

so for 8 ohm speakers should not be any problem at all ...

and this one got 2 sub-woofer out thumbup.gif
so it's a 7.2 channel receiver actually...

There's another latest model from Yammy, RX-V863, around RM3K plus but lacking an Anchor Bay ABT1010 scaler chip (from RX-V1800) but for a few hundred ringgit more, better get RX-V1800 unless you don't need an upscaling thingy.

I found out that Yamaha RX-V1800 / RX-V3800 & Denon AVR-2808 / AVR-3808 are both using Burr-Brown PCM1791 DACs for all channels and not the latest Burr Brown PCM1792 (used in Onkyo SR805) with a signal to noise ration around 123db. drool.gif

Of course, I'm not saying PCM1791 is inferior lah but potong steam mah when you spend so much and not getting the latest DAC pulak. doh.gif Of course, my current budget now is for a RX-V1800 the most, can't afford Onkyo SR805 to be honest. Headache. rclxub.gif

The 3k+ for V863 is list price (same like V861, I get quote from Yamaha direct is RM3,150 but get from outside final price RM2.6k)
FYI, The V661 and 861 also using Burrbrown DAC brows.gif

US start shipping the V663 mid of March...so I think it will only available here around May/Jun....

actually, most reviews don't bother to check 95W at 8 ohms at how many channels loaded.. if run at 7channels full steam, may not be 95W each (depending on brand and how they rate their amps)..

liddat ar? a bit con rating hor?
most good AV amps if rated at 100W per channel 5.1 may be 140-150W at 2 channel load, and at 100W at full 5 channel load..

Many amps using Burr Brown but we must need to know which Burr Brown DAC, PCM1791, PCM1792 or the latest PCM1796 used in Onkyo 805. That's the problem. Very true, the retail price not accurate, sometimes might be a lot cheaper.

Depending on which bank. Max is 2 years only.

You are one of the 'small fry' hmm.gif

The Onkyo is still the most interesting AV receivers at the moment. But, in time to comes, more and more will flock the market for us to choose.

Wanna add my 2 sen, I am using the oldie but goldie RXV657. I don't think anyone here needs to worry obout manufacturere claims on the 95wpc. Its genuine. And if only 1 channel is being drive, it maxes out at 130watts!!. With stereo its closer to 115wpc. So I have no doubt about the 95wpc claim when all channels driven.

But the best feature is the amps natural sound quality. So far no other receiver that I have listened to comes close. But, buy, buy...

Hope to see more budget ones as the current next gen AV receivers cost an arm and a leg. Of course, most importantly a problem free blu-ray player at a decent price.

They better do since the PS3 sucks .... very poor game lineup, have not been using my PS3 for gaming lately, it will never match the success of their PS2 console. Luckily, it's a decent blu-ray player, one of its saving grace but for the XBOX 360, it's a good gaming machine but a poor HD-DVD player in terms of PQ and SQ. Terbalik. rclxub.gif

As a gaming console, PS3 is a letdown but as a Blu-Ray player, it's fantastic, the start up time is better than the best standalone blu-ray players in the market.

There are a few models from Yamaha and Pioneer below RM1K but I'll recommend Nbien, it's around RM1.2K, made in Malaysia also but the sound is quite okay for a budget round, it's less boomy than Yamaha and it goes pretty loud. Nbien won a few awards overseas for their speakers, it's not a 'Cap Ayam' brand but it's no REL or Velodyne killer lah but the sound is acceptable. Hi-Fi Choice Penang has them in stock, I played with them briefly with my own movies and songs. Sound quality is acceptable. Can go there try try lah, dun buy nvm lah, they won't throw you out of the shop. Hahaha.

Because i have a set of 7.1 speakers that only can output 75watts!! doh.gif

Don't worry lah, my uncle's JBL speakers are rated maximum 100 watts but his AV receiver pumps out 135 watts per channel, the speakers still boleh tahan. You don't listen until you use up all the 135 watts mah unless you watch movies at full blast.

My last Sony receiver with 95W per channel but I pair it with a 50W rating Denon speaker, running for many years also no problem....don't worried about it lar...the 95W is the max but I think most of the time the output will be around 10-20W only....I got this confirmation form AVS forum...

khyron, you would always want a more than sufficient amp to drive your speakers and not a under power amp to drive it as it may cuase clipping. In the long run, your speakers will be damaged by it

Yamaha RX-V1800 is made in Perak, should be cheaper here since you need to transport that thing over to Singapore. Other brands might be cheaper in Singapore.

Just read through this thread. A real interesting read. I am looking to upgrade to a new amp and it looks like this Yamaha is the one that will fit my needs. My current setup is a Yamaha RXV 1500 powering my Wharfedale Diamond 9.6 for front, Diamond 9.1 for rear and Diamond 9 CS for center. My question is whether the Yamaha RXV663 is powerful enough to power my speakers as my 9.6 is rated from 50 - 200 watts.

Thanks. I need to hear lossless PCM sound soon or I will go mad!

elmar....this yammy should not hv any problem driving your speakers but if you want more power, go for RX-V863, this one with 105W per channel or if budget permits...get the RX-V1800 or 3800 thumbup.gif

Yup, bit by bit w/o any loss. That's why they claimed you will hear the exact sound effect / quality that was being mixed in the studio. drool.gif

actually...

PCM = Pulse-code modulation

PCM will be uncompressed sound and takes up lots of space in any movies disc

lossless = compressed audio files stored in the shiny disc that take up less space compared to uncompressed PCM files but needed special codec to decode the files into uncompressed format in order to listen to it, claimed can be bit to bit reproduction of the master uncompressed sound

of coz no loss la (LOSSLESS MAH!!)... for example

00000000000010

can be represented by 0x12+1+0 which is shorter space but you still be able to make back the original signal. (no loss)

Yalor, since when we get to buy cheap Hi-Fi stuff in Malaysia, even Yamaha is made in Malaysia, the price is definitely not made in Malaysia. If it's imported from Japan and they sell at RM2K, I'll say that it's a good buy. tongue.gif

Muahahah...yaa laaa...if the price is right then I'm in..looking for one since I'm getting a new TV.

At first wanted to buy 661 cos Iwas thinking that I should get PS3 to decode all the HD audio and just output LPCM into the AV receiver....the receiver just output the audio to the speakers as LPCM. I'd be getting the same audio if I let the receiver decode the bitstream rather than the PS3

then when I saw 663 support 1080p 60 AND 24 PLUS 100/120hz...I think I'd better buy 663.

But still need all you sifu help as I really never used an AV receiver before this...only HTS.

In the mean time:

1) Can 661 just transfer whatever Video output the PS3 give to the TV via HDMI? Coz, I'm afraid that if 661 didn't support 24(fps)hz...then my ps3 output the 24fps for nothing coz when it goes thru the AV receiver it can't output 24fps?

Does the question above make any sense?

Also comparison on 863/663/661 specs
Notice the price diff

Then means the TV can still accept my PS3 24fps signal?...so if my PS3 can decode all tracks to LPCM..then the 661 can always accept it...so no need for 663 laa right?

that's not DTS-MA

that's DTS-MA (CORE at 1.5mbps) i.e. not the full MA, just partial MA.

yes! ns200 is a discontinued product.
I've used wharfedale before but i'm prefer this yammie front speaker for my yammie av amps.
its really good for ht but not for music listening.
For surround i'm using ae100i, wharfedale for centre & wharfedale cube for my surround back & presence & jamo505e sub.

Erm... for me, it aint my cup of tea. Maybe for amateur with budget constraint into HT, it is decent. There are many better choices out there, if you ask me.

Wah... But, on another note, no need to bring the AVR there. Just audition. I suppose they have similiar AVR or substitute models.

I was at this HiFi shop in Sunway Pyramid......(no prize for guessing which) and heard this conversation -

Salesman - this pair of cables very good wan. I tested it already.
Customer - how much?
Salesman - only RM7,000
Customer - WHAT! RM7,000??!!!!
Salesman - yes, its only medium range. Got higher wan. A lot of my customer bought already. I've tested it myself. The higher range ones cost RM175,000
Customer - HUH! RM175,000?
Salesman - yes! and I've tested it myself, its very good. made of 99.99% pure silver! Its proven!
Customer - got ppl spend so much on cables meh?
Salesman - yes, some say thats it better than changing to a new amp even. Ive tested before and it sounds very open.
Salesman - come I show you one more thing. *takes customer to the counter*. This is a zerostat gun
Customer - whats that?
Salesman - you know your CDs or DVDs got a lot of static wan. ah this thing will take away those static. I've test it myself. Very good. You hear than you know the difference.
Customer - this wan for the player or disc?
Salesman - hear I show you *takes out zerostat and show customer*, you press like this and all the static will be gone.

Wow! I didnt know that I have to rid the static from my disc? I have use Zerostat before back in the early 80s for my records but I didnt know they make a difference for optical disc!

Anyway, salesman says "he tested already" like a million times so Im inclined to believe him.....

Digitalkl, I knew which shop that you are talking about. Maybe it's the guy, whom is manning the shop in Dsara Uptown now. Quite cocky.

There is another dude, who is quite friendly when I frequent there years ago. First class treatment.

Their 'HQ' also got a few who looked down on potential customers. It pissed me off so much that I returned the next week with bling bling and xxxxx. That fella did a about turn in his attitude and serving me like a King. I did not buy anything but gave him a nice lesson and walked out.

Salestalk and try to hard sell it. It's utterly crazy and downright inappropriate to say that it is better than changing the amp if the cables cost more than the amp. Even if it costs abt half the price of my amp, I would rather upgrade my amp.

To buy a RM7,000 cable, your system must be those high end setup that costs 6 figures. Overkill, at least for me.

AudioPro aint bad but for me, it doesnt suit me. one of the reason is the price. I have auditioned the Evo series before. A bit high on the treble and soundstage aint the best for the money.

I would rather opt for KEF, Wharfy or AE for the money

I noticed the yamaha sub are quite cheap, you know any other better options around the budget of sub 1k, preferred 8" than 6.5", i was thinking to buy YST-SW030, Harvey Norman selling for RM 699 iirc.

I was thinking how much I can sell off the 459, then upgrade to 663 or something like that when its available here locally.

same like SONY receiver also what...the SONY is even worst...it's available freely in US/EU but in boleh land....u have to make special order and wait for 2-3 months for the unit...I wanted to get the DG910 b4 buying my V861 but Sony said it's a "high end" model here so have to make special order and funny thing is, they put in in their quarterly promotion booklet.... shakehead.gif doh.gif

I was thinking how much I can sell off the 459, then upgrade to 663 or something like that when its available here locally.

Try Hifi Choice in Midland. Just went there last week.

Just like Gen-2 mar....launch in Thailand 1st...

same like SONY receiver also what...the SONY is even worst...it's available freely in US/EU but in boleh land....u have to make special order and wait for 2-3 months for the unit...I wanted to get the DG910 b4 buying my V861 but Sony said it's a "high end" model here so have to make special order and funny thing is, they put in in their quarterly promotion booklet.... shakehead.gif  doh.gif

Itu pun belum teruk lagi, our local version, the newly launched Sony Bravia W400 series doesn't have 100 Mhz motion flow even though it's a full HD panel but the equivalent model in the US, V4100 has 100 Mhz motion flow and a host of exclusive features at a cheaper price. doh.gif Potong steam ..... mad.gif

Style Photo doesn't sell B&W speakers but nowadays their audio room is not as good as last time, I have stopped going there since 10 years ago.

The shop is located opposite Komtar's row of goldsmith shops along Penang road, before the traffic lights. You can't miss it. Next to it is the famous Penang Road chicken rice stall. laugh.gif

That particular chicken shop, once i bring my family go eat there, they all agreed that the chicken chopped and served like dog food. lol
quite expensive to me, but the taste is OK.

Well, for example, like the RX-V1800, certain features are not the same as the US version, though not important or won't spoil our listening sessions but felt cheated mar since we're paying more and getting less. mad.gif

Last time, Style Photo very high end one, they have Mordaunt Short, Tannoy, KEF, JBL, Wharfedale, Cerwin Vega, Cabase, PSB, etc but now very limited brands left. Not to perli or anything lah, I guess they're not into high end stuff now, more towards mainstream stuff.

That chicken rice shop ar ...... last time used to be okay but now, not only expensive, the chicken looked dried up and not fresh, the drinks lagi teruk, no flavour at all and dare to charge me RM1.20 for one 'teh peng' vmad.gif Mau kena satay liao.

Lansi no point, they have forgotten that they're in Penang, Penangites are price sensitive and they want the best service, with this type of attitude, they won't go far for sure.

I guess the spending power in KL more geng than here. People in Penang are more price sensitive b'coz disposable income is not as much as people staying in KL. This is thru my personal observation, even my friend said, the Yamaha RX-V1800 also hard to sell in Penang but in KL, some ppl find it cheap and reasonable. Most of the hi-fi stuff sold at my friend's shop are mostly budget range to be honest.

Wow, power, can nego until RM3,600 but I'm unable to get this price here in Penang. The lowest is only RM3,750. Some shops in upper class areas are selling it at RM4,300. doh.gif

Heck I will go with 663. Why?
1) I can use the extra money for another set of speaker to expand my system from 5.1 to 7.1 or get PS3 as Bluray player
2) Like 1800, 663 also support all HD audio format and comes with HDMI 1.3 for half the price
3) 663 fascia is about the same with my 461 so my wife wont notice the change laugh.gif

RX-V1800, 5 simple reasons:

1.) RX-V1800 comes with Anchor Bay upscaling chip, same chip used in Arcam's award winning dvd player.

2.) Has more RMS per channel, can drive big or small speakers with low sensitivity with ease.

3.) Stable RMS power across all channels, whether 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1

4.) Better Burr Brown DACs used.

5.) Components used are of different grade, RX-V1800 is more towards audiophile quality but RX-V663 is for budget range.

The tempting part is 7.2 drool.gif At least got a reason to buy CHT-12R hmm.gif

I must confessed that I am a little greedy. I shall wait for 863 and see what's the pricetag. Hope it is way lower than 1800. rolleyes.gif

Both should be using the same components, just the the RMS per channel is higher. Sometimes, a modest amp will do, very seldom we use all the juice to watch a movie.

Taikor, I am still holding on. Wait til 863 is here. Still undecided. Maybe 863, if it's good or 1800 or 805 (if got extra moolah). If not, 705.

Denon is too expensive to be considered.

If you don't need a built in 1080p scaler from Anchor Bay, 863 is good enough, 1800 is more pricey because of the built in scaler.

frankly, since PS3 will be able to decode the DTS-MA from fw 2.30, u will need only V661 to do the job satisfactory. the different between the 661 & 663 is only this audio codec thing...nothing much.

or get the V861 if u need upscaler like I do for the Astro but the result not very noticeable, only smoother and less jagger on my TV but the improvement is less than 5% for my eyes lar....

however, major diff for 863 vs 663 will the abality to upconvert everything to HDMI for 863 while 663 only to component nia...so, no single cable connection for 663....

Taikor, I am using AVR2802 now. If buy 663, then it is one step reverse. I would stick to mid-range setup

Not trying to 'pijak' our honorable Digitalkl. But, with my current setup (not being LCLY) the speakers are of mid-range and current AVR too, it would defeat the purpose of it if aI go for entry level AVR.

Wah..... need to take such extreme measures to get the HD65?

No need, just pass your cc or cash and I would gladly pass the HD65 to you.

I do hope that 863 is near to RM3K when it is finally here

if 863 is 3k then might as well buy rxv1800 at rm3600....

for me the only difference among them is the power. of course extra features (which either got use or not only). how to consider mid range, high range and low range? to me there is only 2 levels - either top end like Z11 or the rest like 663, 863, 1800, 3800

what audio processor is 663 vs 863 vs 1800 vs 3800 using?

RM1890, too excited and forgot to ask for discount.
Just finished the wiring and tested few minutes of Die Hard 4, haven't had the time to play around the settings.
Of course it definately better than my 5 years old Sony avr !

Congrats bro. Just use the YPAO calibration, then tweak a little as you see fit to your listening taste. Really easy to setup! thumbup.gif

Next, get the YSD-10 iPOD docks. tongue.gif

And yes, that's a very good price. Almost half of my 1800. sweat.gif

Mine works great! At first I made some minor tweaks after the calibration.

But after few days I still wasn't satisfied and did the YPAO again, this time I let the calibrated settings as it is. Now I have the best setup I've ever heard. thumbup.gif

Whatever your room condition is, the auto-calibration will try to get the best results based on the surroundings.

So I don't know, did you pace the mic correctly? Or did someone fart while you do it? laugh.gif tongue.gif

Yes, at night they place all the tables on the walkway and even on the road. Filled with people until can hardly find place to sit. Mostly ah lian and college kids type though. So if you like the sophisticated mature type, this won't appeal to you.
