Mr Aza, in the UK, part 2 architecture is a degree or a master programme?
I am determined to advance my studies to the UK. Is it hard to get a place in top universities like Cambridge or AA?

QUOTE(al_aajily @ Oct 14 2008, 08:35 PM)
salam mr azarimy

i've already graduated from b.arch iium earlier this year
and currently in big dillemma

well, you see. we sat for accreditation assessment for part2 last may, and have a very good chance to be accredited this time (well, already 'unofficially' announced, but i choose not to be over confident)
meaning that, i have a bright chance to further my career until part3.

but i have interest in becoming an academician as well
from your opinion (and experience) is it good to continue my study in postgraduate studies without having any working experience?
does a good architecture professor need to be a good architect (by practicing it)?

or is it better to practice and get the hard-earned part3, and then change to academic profession?
does current economic situation show that it is not a good time to practice architecture as a profession?
*
You're already a great teacher now I can say that.
How about opting to stay for at least another sem?
p:s// I'm his student.. hehehe

there are schools that offer masters, some in post-grad diploma, but most offer degree.

yes, it is quite hard to get into cambridge and AA. but AA have dropped in ranking lately. try bath or sheffield.

Is there any place I can learn or any tips to be good in drawing perspective. I'm not talking about basic one or two point perspective but rather on multiple points perspective.

normally, a pre-architecture portfolio should have samples of artworks and designs that u have done in the past. it doesnt have to be architectural per se, bcoz nobody expects u to learn architecture BEFORE u take up an architecture course. so artworks can be portraits, scenery or whatever. designs could be logo designs, magazine layouts, comics, murals and so on. the design would carry more weight if it's a real project rather than theoretical ones.

normally portfolio is in A3. at this point, u dont need anything bigger than that. A4 is fine too. preferably each page consists of one item. two the most. keep it tidy regardless of how messy ur artwork is wink.gif. if u could, add a little description on each artwork like title, date, media and a little description about the work. this is so that the interviewer wont have to ask about ur artwork and could ask about something else that is more relevant about ur application wink.gif.

hi azarimy,

Im looking forward for an internship with a firm for my holiday (2/3 months). Im wondering how should I apply or what should I prepare before interviews?

I have several portfolios and will be composing them into one whole piece by the semester end, and I'm not certain if the idea of using digital portfolio is good. so should I bring both a3 portfolio or just the cd portfolio?

on the other hand, is there any good teachers for 3dsmax out there? I wanna learn particularly with mapping and rendering.

if u gonna have a digital portfolio, there's only 2 ways to present it:

a. bring ur own equipment, ie laptop or something with a big enough screen for them to appreciate ur works. dont ever assume they're gonna entertain u by preparing their own laptop or PC or whatever. if u want the job, show them that u're independent.

b. submit to them a full week before the interview. give them ample time to review ur work. sometimes it'll save u the time and they might offer u the job straight away. or maybe they'll reject u outright. either way, still saves u the time, right? LOL.

help me....what is an experimental architecture??izit something like playing around with the spaces/forms?? or maybe a complex of geometry etc.? meh..i've tried a translation method which something like a wave or a rhythm of music(for example Jimi Hendrix's) transformed into my building form....n it was totally absurd or karut... izit the karut thingy what we called 'experimental'??rclxub.gif ....oh yea....just curious...whut is the best method or procedure in design??coz usually i started with forms(exterior) then plans/spaces' layout .....izit the right way for designing process??

experimental architecture, in essence, is an approach to design that adopts the scientific approach. meaning u start with the problem, then how to tackle a problem, establish a method to solve the problem, attempt to solve it, and the conclusion. this is in a very linear fashion, quite contrary to the holistic approach that design has.

but what it provides is a method to systematically tackle specific problems or issues. it can be space, form, technology, material etc. there's no specific limit or restrictions on what u can experiment on.

designers usually confuse when they see an experimental architecture. they often assumed that it is a style. it is NOT a style. it's a method of work. experimental architecture have one important element: experimented element. this can be alot of things. usually we see experiments in design generation using digital media. this is hugely popular in the late 90s to 2005 bcoz this is where the internet boom really kicks into architecture. so architects start jumping into computers to generate new designs using experimental techniques. hence the product of such experimental architectures are mostly digital or virtual architecture.

this leads to confusion, where people thought experimental architecture = digital/virtual. dont worry, even lecturers or experts confuse themselves. the term experimental architecture was not clearly defined. it's not like one day someone wakes up and coins the phrase wink.gif.

so back to ur issue:

yes, translating music into architectural form can be an experimental architecture. but what do u experiment with? what's the mechanism of translation that u gonna use? remember, experimental architecture is rooted strongly in scientific approach. 1+1 MUST equal to 2. if not ur equation will fall apart, in which it will be absurd or karut.

i've seen students attempt music translation, but most of the time they were just fooling themselves. i mean, how do Bflatminor translates into a door? or how the a rising crescendo translates into a rising pitch roof? what mechanism do u use? could a Bflatminor be translated into a curved wall instead? what argument did u use to defend that?

these are scientific arguments, which grounds experimental architecture. 1+1 MUST equal to 2. u can show solid argument into why it MUST be 2. it'll be hard for others to dispute it. so with a good and indisputable formula, u can produce a scientific experiment. and from that experiment, u get a good architecture.

i'm not exactly sure what P and S is.

whether ur sketches are gempak or not it doesnt always matter. professionalism counts. this includes ur understanding on what u wanna show in ur portfolio, and the way u show it. for example, one of the biggest no-no in a typographical layout is to write something vertically:

l
i
k
e

t
h
i
s

u must avoid doing vertical text like that. if u want to, write it "like this" and rotate it 90degrees. so in this example, if u were to write it like the wrong example above, ur portfolio might be rejected outright, regardless of how good ur work really is.

usually A is the preferred format bcoz it's similar to a book configuration.

if most of ur works are in landscape format, then u should still use the A format, but bound in landscape position (meaning the folio is bound on the short side instead of the long side).

why is P in a box, while S is not? (referring to C).

the layout of each page is up to u. preferably each description is beneath the artwork. it's usually small so that it will not distract the eyes. u're selling ur artworks, not the description. hence why all art galleries and museums have a very, very small print.

putting the description underneath the picture will allow u to use both sides of the pages. it will also allow u to put more works per page without sacrificing the overall format.

whatever u use, make sure it's all uniform. the fonts are exactly the same; each pages using the same layout and margin; the placement of the artworks are the same; paper quality/weight is the same and so on.

to understand frank gehry's works, u should start with understanding deconstructivism (although he himself disagrees that he follows any particular theories except his). gehry didnt just conjure the forms out of nothing. he has a solid grounding on his theories, so it's not just some nice looking architecture bcoz he wants it to.

anyone could design like gehry, but they cant produce anything more than copying what gehry did unless they understand the theories behind each design. so until u come up with a strong theory of ur own or follow any particular theories that have been established, u wont be producing any spectacular work wink.gif.
