I've asked quite alot of ppl on this questions, these are usually what I get:
1) Average starting pay varies.... currently in Malaysia is Rm2500...can be as high as Rm3000 if ur really good/impressive.

the lowest I've heard is rm1600. architecture don't have a good starting pay, it's a bad investment to study unless you really interested in it

2) Architects are not really that hot in demand but wif a good portfolio, u can eventually get someone to employ you.

demand is there, preferably experienced ones. you can always look at the newspaper and usually would be three advertisements hiring experienced architects. in malaysia, architecture is not as highly regarded as in overseas, the malaysian public doesn't recognize the role of architects in construction industry second only to developers, but you gotta wait until malaysia is developed.

3) NOBODY IS GUARANTEED A JOB. Like i said, wif a good portfolio, you can always get urself hired.

high employability rate, depends on how you find opportunities

4) Architecture is not hard... a lot of mental stress n physical stress though.

one word. architorture. be prepared to have sleepless nights in a row

5) You do not need to b good in drawing, if you can imagine da spaces and put it into paper for others to see well enuf. When most ppl cant draw, they use computer tools to substitute that.

during studying, drawing skills are very often needed, architects communicate through sketches and models. without sketches, youre half paralyzed. but in malaysia's architectural profession, most still depend on autocad (yeah, client's design not architect's)

to azarimy:

you have no idea how relief i am to hear someone telling me not to 'jump the gun'  laugh.gif  cos' everyone keeps asking me, 'so how are you preparing so far?' (and i usually 'er...'  sweat.gif  i think the reason they ask is because they don't know what else to talk about. haih) okay, i'll try the box thing you mention, just to know the basics. i've actually considered going to (maybe) work/help out in an archi firm, if they need someone (and my friends are all saying, 'you know, i have an uncle/auntie/cousin/etc who's an architect...maybe he/she can help you...'  >_< how come everyone except me has relatives who are architects?!!) then someone gave me a veryvery appreciated piece of advice, 'if you're going to (i mean, since you planned to) work with buildings and drawings for the rest of your life, shouldnt you enjoy these last few months before moving on to that other stage of your life? cos' after these few months, i think you wont be able to stop thinking about buildings and floor plans even if you wanted to.'  laugh.gif

plus he told me it wouldn't have worked out anyway because 1) the real architects will be too busy to teach me anything 2) i don't have any skills that they need anyway i.e. drafting skills/...(okay, i don't even now what they need...i have not the slightest idea what goes on inside an archi firm shocking.gif ) 3) even if they do hire me, it'll be for doing paperwork like photocopying or sending documents to other places and i wont learn anything useful for my future.

to gildil:

thanks for your info. but i guess i'll just have to wait till i start reading archi and learn the softwares along with my course mates  smile.gif  but i'll keep in mind Archicad, 3D Max and (from azarimy) illustrator.

thanks a lot!

I think the first thing you should learn is photoshop/illustrator. from my experience in architecture, you ARE expected to know some graphic composition skills, unless you want to do cut and paste onto boards though. and that is my friend, one of the crucial skills to compose a presentation board.

plus add some knowledge in the field of architecture, read up some books/magazines. know who the hell are le corbusier, mies van der rohe, frank lloyd wright and some contemporary ones; tadao ando, frank gehry and norman foster. and identify their styles/preference - it would help you a lot cause you can explain your design using famous architects' quotes to make your presentation much more powerful.

on the other hand, don't worry too much of learning CADs and BIMS- you will have the chance to learn them in your semester - unlike photoshop.

the architectural workshop started off in the mid 80s by UTM as social gathering of architecture students from all the schools in malaysia, IPTA, IPTS and polytechnic schools included. this is where u get to know what other schools are doing, get to know other people and basically socialize. architects are in fact social beasts. so this is one way to satisfy their lust to socialize.

but bcoz the hosts are IPTAs (with LKW being the only IPTS co-host), it must have an academic content to pass as a student event. hence they have workshop programmes which is less formal education and more people oriented. so u can learn while at the same time go hu-ha along the way.

at the same time, there are lots of competitions held there, the most popular one is the design competition. this is where u gauge urself against the best from other schools. the competition is prestigious enough that it became the standard to compare how good each school is.

it's an annual event, and each year the host will be rotated between UTM, UiTM, USM, UM, UIAM and UPM. so this year it's USM, next will be UM.

attending such event as a participant adds up to ur credentials as an architecture graduate. hosting a workshop is event greater prestige.

lol, i wonder how to join this workshop- asking my faculty or something? im from LKW btw.

the host will usually issue a formal invitation to each school, normally direct to the head of school. is zatur still the head of school in LKW? ask her. the school will talk to the student body, and from there on the student body will organize a selection. normally each school could send about 20-30 students only, but everyone would wanna go. so pandai2 select between urself lah. biggrin.gif

well, one of my lecturers asked me about the PAM camp, but she doesn't have much details on it. anyway, I'll ask my seniors if there's anything special for me. oh.. abt ms zatur, she's one of our design lecturers, not sure if she's the head of school. our architecture student body is pretty much complicated and sort of 'exclusive', but I can go to ask them.

I always use the newest ones. currently what I have are autoCAD and 3dsmax 2008 with archicad 11. havnt start grasping 2009 yet, need to wait the prated version to come out- lol

autoCAD LT can only do 2d commands, bad thing if you need to do 3d, but that cut out a big price, and I think lots of malaysian firms loved autoCAD LT for that.

newer/older versions do have their differences. newer ones have better commands, though you've to always check and learn from 'what's new feature'. but the disadvantage is that if you want to transfer from maybe autoCAD 2008 to your friend's 2004, you might need to save as older DWG version, to make sure its compatible.

I wonder when autodesk will learn from adobe having the 'maximise compatibility' function, so we won't have to worry of the version insimilarities. that'll really help a lot.

This site claims that they offer archicad student edition for free.

I do not use it but it might be of interest to others.

if you provide the student card, yes archicad 11 is free as in educational license (same functions as the commercial one). but of course, it's only 1 year though

QUOTE(myesarah @ May 30 2008, 12:17 AM)
hi everyone~~

i'm looking for a laptop that's compatible for autocad
do u guys have any suggestion on what's the best laptop -- brand & model -- that's able to run autocad smoothly?
(with tech specs included if possible)
my budget is around rm3000

i'm thinking of buying dell inspiron 1420
its tech specs :::

PROCESSOR ::  Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology - Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5550
MEMORY  ::  2GB DDR2 SDRAM
HARD DRIVE  ::  120GB* Hard Drive
GRAPHIC CARD ::  128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS
OPERATING SYSTEM  ::  Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
MONITOR  ::  14.1” WXGA Display with Integrated 2.0 mega pixel web cam
what do u guys think?
do the tech specs enough to run autocad?
*

with the current spec you specified, I am pretty sure the laptop will run autocad 2008 pretty smoothly. otherwise, brand & model is a very vague thing, and for me in that case you might want to consider the budget for choosing the brand & model. nevertheless, it might be a good choice to choose a bigger screen if you are doing autocad 3d- as things may become very complex and you need a few viewports to get a good view of the drawing.

but if you are looking for more than just autocad, maybe to render visualizations with 3dsmax- I may suggest you to choose a c2d processor of 2.0ghz or higher.

hi azarimy,

Im looking forward for an internship with a firm for my holiday (2/3 months). Im wondering how should I apply or what should I prepare before interviews?

I have several portfolios and will be composing them into one whole piece by the semester end, and I'm not certain if the idea of using digital portfolio is good. so should I bring both a3 portfolio or just the cd portfolio?

on the other hand, is there any good teachers for 3dsmax out there? I wanna learn particularly with mapping and rendering.
