I saw a Samsung Lazer printer at d*** Smith for something like $60 on special. Its crazy these days. The ink is almost as expensive as the printer itself! When I came, I did some maths, and I figured that at $0.09 a page from my uni, it wasn't worth buying one, as the costs will come up to the same anyway. With prices like these, I may have to redo my maths. Paper will cost a bit through. QUOTE(kamagotchi @ Mar 2 2008, 04:56 PM) How convinent. I just spent the weekend playing with 3's 3G broadband. $29/month gets you 2GB, which IMO isn't that bad.Don't expect DSL speeds however. The ping time is amazing (about 350ms just to the base tower), so Skype'ing will cause some delay and echo's. Its not for heavy downloaders. General web surfing is okay through. Here in Brisbane, 3's coverage isn't that great. My friend who's on a 3 cap plan can't get a signal in the lecture theater, while my Optus prepaid can get a reasonable signal. You better be near a window if you want to use the wireless broadband of 3's in Brisbane. The other providers that I know off are Vodafone (5GB for $39), Virgin (heaven knows what they charge, but they use Optus' infrastructure), Telstra (the worst. $69 for 500MB?! In all fairness through, you can pretty much get a Telstra signal anywhere.) and Optus (not much better than Telstra price wise IMO). Never used the others, so I cant say too much. Some links if you want to do some research: Three Vodafone Optus Telstra Virgin |

Free printing (approx 250-500 pages per session depending if I tutor) from uni, but I've just got myself an HP Multifunction printer (as my old Epson died) as I'd still like to do some printing/scanning/etc. in the middle of the night.

You better be near a window if you want to use the wireless broadband of 3's in Brisbane. You should ask your friend to force his phone into GSM mode which will usually give you better signals and saves you battery if he frequently experience signal outtage from Three's cell towers. For Three, if you're out of their 3G coverage, it'll roam into Telstra's E/GSM networks which usually means you'll be running on EDGE (if supported) or worse, GPRS speeds. Just found out that heavy SMS-ing over here is more expensive back home.. This post has been edited by ATI.Bob: Mar 2 2008, 09:52 PM |

QUOTE(HyeoshinX @ Feb 2 2008, 03:25 PM) Aih. I'm not staying in the city. I'm staying at my relatives place in Wantirna South. Taking the train to the city is a bit hard cause of the ticket price. AUS$161 for a monthly train/tram/bus ticket is a little over the edge. I'm at Melb too. AUD161 is considerably cheap if comparing renting at the city $170 per wk for a studio. |

HSDPA/3.5G should net you about 100-150ms ping to the base station. UMTS/3G fares a little worse at 250-300ms.
Forcing a phone to GSM mode has its own set of problems. 1) Very slow speed, 2) RF buzz when you use your phone near unshielded amplifiers, 3) temporary data disconnection when a call comes in. |

The modem is pricy, but students normally sell theirs at a low price on the uni intranet place Added on March 3, 2008, 1:47 pm QUOTE(KVReninem @ Mar 3 2008, 04:06 PM) Yea, in the Bayside area. It's still alright, I know lots of people complaining about the z1+2 and would rather drive up to z1 to park their vehicles before taking the train. but...nah, not for me.But Connex sure is getting lots of complaints...very bad service during peak hr. This morn they stopped the city loop, something happened at Melb Central. I would rather complain about the hse interest rates. This post has been edited by scmay: Mar 3 2008, 01:47 PM |

Maybe I was just unlucky. But Brisbane folks will testify how 3's coverage is a bit lacking in some areas. They remind me of Digi not so long ago.Forcing a phone to GSM mode has its own set of problems. 1) Very slow speed, 2) RF buzz when you use your phone near unshielded amplifiers, 3) temporary data disconnection when a call comes in. On another note, most ISP's like Virgin will allow you to return your base station after 7 days and get a full refund if you can't get a good signal in your place. Best to read the fine print before committing to anything. And yes, while you can use Telstra's network outside of 3's mobile coverage zone, they charge an arm and a leg for the privilege. |

Its Myki(poo in sweedish) system failed to be deliver on time, 15 month behind schedule. today, the train station system main power failure causing outage and the whole city loop have to be shut down, next i`m just waiting for a sardine train to be in disaster. brumby govt is way too not working, building new road in city fringe not gonna solve the problem when the oil price up. the transport minister about house interest rates, the more it go up the better, coz too much house ard are overpriced and it is all build up speculation/ created artifical demand. look at perth, how much is one apartment of 2 bedroom, 900+K atleast ...not yet build... Yes true, home ownership here is an obssesion and is kinda expensive compare to Malaysia.
Regarding wireless, the vodafone deal is really enticing 5GB/$39 permonth at 24 months contract. That's what i hate the most ,contracts , and not to mention uploads and downloads are counted as one. But if you look at the fine print esp. with no contract 5GB is more than $39 permonth, nvr the less, take wireless if YOU SERIOUSLY need the internet. My program alone is depended heavily on the availability of internet for online courses and also notice board and email, and also the wonderful wikipedia for my maths to brush up my basics, so 1.5 GB permonth provided by my accomodation is really not bad plus 500MB by my Uni for 6 months period, so for browsing is ok. Anyway i'll take landline connection than wireless, only for the right price ..... |
